Location - North campus Position summary Conducts field trials with canola breeding and research materials at 3-4 sites; trial plans are prepared by Canola Breeder. Technician’s responsibility includes trial seed set-up, seed treatment with chemicals, land preparation, field plot layout, seeding in field plots, plot management, note taking, and harvesting the field plots. The technician will also assist graduate students in their field experimentations. In winter and during less busy time in the field season, seed increase in greenhouse; this includes seeding and harvesting of the plants. Duties would require flexibility to work occasionally beyond normal working hours on weekdays, and on weekends, as and when required, during the crop season. Duties Field trials: * Responsible for executing all tasks for the field trials including disease nursery plots. This includes, seed set-up; seed treatment with chemicals; land preparation including fertilizer application; layout of the field plots; seeding; plot management which also includes fertilizer, herbicides and pesticide application, as needed; note taking; harvesting; and sample preparation for chemical analysis. Field trials are conducted at 3-4 sites (e.g. trials at South Campus and St. Albert; disease nursery plots at Spruce Groove and St. Albert/Leduc); for this, transportation of farm machinery to different trial sites will be needed. * Organize and perform analysis of the yield and other data collected from the field trials using a computer. The summarized data will be used by Canola Breeder for selection of materials and germplasm development. * Assists graduate students in their field experimentations * Communication with industry partner/collaborator regarding field trials (e.g. exchange trials). * Duties would require flexibility to work occasionally beyond normal working hours on weekdays, and on weekends, as and when required, during the crop season. * Responsible for maintaining seed inventory at the research station. All breeding and research seed materials need to be maintained in an orderly fashion for easy access by the Canola Breeding program personnel. Materials this is no longer needed will be discarded in consultation with the Canola Breeder. Greenhouse: * In winter as well as during less busy time in summer, seed increase of the canola breeding and research materials in greenhouse for generation advance. This includes seeding and harvesting of the plants, and seed preparation for seeding in field or in greenhouse. * Responsible for maintaining the machineries used for field plot trials in proper working condition and getting any repairs done (or sending the machinery for repairs) as and when necessary * Help in canola seed quality analysis in laboratory during winter months. * Supervises 1-3 summer students and 1-2 casual in field operations. * Responsible for safety operation of the field trial and other equipment, as well as providing training to the summer and graduate students, whenever they will be operating the equipment. Qualifications * B.Sc. in Agriculture or Plant Science. Selected candidate need to have Alberta pesticide application license/permit, or required to get it, and obtain approval for driving privileges for U of A vehicles. * A minimum of two to three years’ experience in conducting field trial research is required. * Experience in operating and maintaining farm machinery in good working order (for land preparation, seeding, spraying, harvesting, etc.). * Experience in driving truck, and transporting tractor, plot seeder, sprayer, plot combine, etc. (chained down to a trailer) to different trial sites. The climate crisis and sustainability issues touch on virtually every discipline and the next generation of experts must reinforce the networks between specialists operating in the spheres of environment, economy and society. In this context, we are pleased to invite you to the 3rd annual CIREQ Interdisciplinary PhD Student Symposium on Climate Change. The symposium will take place on June 1st - 2nd, 2023, in hybrid format: online via Zoom and in person at 4th Space - Concordia University in Montréal. The event will showcase PhD students’ presentations embedded in thematic discussions along with a scientific communication workshop and panel discussions with scholars and workplace experts. The attendance is free and open to everyone. Although Canada is blessed with an abundance of food, there are households in Canada which experience food insecurity. When stratified by home ownership, food insecurity is the highest for those who rent their home (29%) and drops to less than half of that (12%) for homeowners who have a mortgage. While Canadian and global food production are trending upward, the link between homeownership and food insecurity may provide a pathway for new initiatives meant to combat food insecurity in Canada. Therefore, What We are Reading highlights a USDA report entitled “International Food Security Assessment, 2022-2032”<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001KvgCq8o4t-5qn6n3VT3L_rS2Jcy3_Hyku9JfDbnqwf8…> which projects food insecurity for 77 countries to 2032. The authors measure the rate of food insecurity as the share of the population who consumes less than 2100 calories per day. Despite positive global income growth, the number of food insecure people in the 77 at-risk countries rose from 2021 to 2022 to 1.3 billion, an increase of 10% in a single year. Higher prices for fertilizer and energy have the effect of reducing yields and income to worsen food insecurity for low-income, import-dependent countries in particular. The authors estimated that these developments may have led to an additional 42 to 135 million food-insecure people in 2022. While the report projects that food insecurity will decline over the next 10 years (to 577 million people – approximately half of today’s number), this is no guarantee, given the uncertainty, volatility, and risk associated with trade and geopolitical developments. Les auteurs mesurent l'insécurité alimentaire comme la part de la population qui ne se consomme moins de 2100 calories par jour. Malgré une croissance positive des revenus en 2022, le nombre de personnes en situation d'insécurité alimentaire dans les 77 pays à risque a augmenté de 10 % entre 2021 et 2022 pour atteindre 1,3 milliards de personnes. Selon le rapport, l’augmentation des prix alimentaires, provoqué par l'invasion russe en Ukraine en sont le principal responsable. Les prix des matières premières avaient déjà augmenté jusqu'en 2021 en raison des perturbations de la chaîne d'approvisionnement, de la sécheresse dans les principaux pays producteurs de denrées alimentaires et de la hausse des prix de l'énergie. One may think accessing a therapist, psychologist, or support group is as simple as walking through a door. However, access for Black Canadians serves to be challenging because our African-descent ethnic-cultures span across different modalities and intersections, which does not require a "one shoe fits all" approach. Addressing mental health concerns requires an intentional understanding that many prescriptions for healing Black Canadians are entrenched in white ideology that remains anti-Black, causing misdiagnosis to solve the many issues among Black people. The Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program (ACMP) and the University of Manitoba Black Alliance (UMBA) will be hosting an event in the month of February focused on bringing awareness to addressing mental health concerns in our Black community. On February 22nd, 2023, we encourage audience members, both at home and in person, to appreciate knowledge from our featured guest speakers and experience an open and thought-provoking group discussion in an effort to educate and empower people. The event focuses on providing Black community members and the broader community with the opportunity to talk about mental health issues openly and safely with mental health professionals. By creating a safe space for Black people of different and respected lived experiences. We also encourage people from different ethnic backgrounds to connect with experts in the field, we strive to empower people by granting them access to tools and resources that allow them to seek help but know how to access help. Additionally, we work towards raising awareness about the wide spectrum of mental health issues that affect the Black community and reducing the stigmas associated with mental illness. This can include promoting positive behaviours that encourage people to seek help and inspire others to consider their emotional well-being. The Winnipeg-based initiative will focus on two main approaches: (1) Recognizing Black people's trauma and discussing mental health in the Black Community (2) What next? - Seeking meaningful help to address trauma.
