that is part of the College of Life Sciences' plant research division
based at the near-by Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI). Both the
College and SCRI have excellent core facilities. Applicants should have,
or be about to obtain, a PhD, and experience in plant molecular biology
or biochemistry would be an advantage.

Hi all,
Following information may be useful for those looking for phd opportunities.
PhD positions in the life sciences, ETH Zurich and the University of
Zurich, Switzerland
The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several Ph.D. programs
that cover distinct areas of the life sciences. Each program offers
research and education opportunities in a stimulating international
environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D.
degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the
participating research groups of their favorite program, according to
their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are
offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English
throughout.
Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Masters degree or
equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the
Ph.D. program. Applicants accepted for the program will have to register
with either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending on the
affiliation of their future research group.
Application deadlines: July 1st and December 1st
Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years
The web pages provide detailed information for submission of
application. Please refer to the guidelines as they only take into
consideration applications received in the required format.

Because so many faculty had other committments and could not attend the
first meeting of course development for "Feeding a Hungry Planet", we
will have a make up class. The time is 1:30 on Tuesday, May 20.
Location is Plant Science Seminar Room.
Remember - this is the FIRST day back from the long weekend.
Hope to see you there!

Dear all,
I would like to thank everyone for providing me a great opportunity to
serve PSGSA as the president. I am currently looking at ways to improve
the activities of PSGSA which will directly benefit everyone in our
department. I would like to hear from you more about what you think
could be done through PSGSA. Your suggestions in this regard are greatly
appreciated.
I have two plans right now. 1 - setting up a notice board perhaps at the
graduate lounge/any common area and display the relevant opportunities
arising at international level (graduate openings, job vacancies,
post-doc positions, etc.). 2- starting discussion groups or other
initiatives with the aim of preparing phd students for candidacy exams.
Please mail me with your suggestions.
Thanks
Muthu

Hi Bev,
Good morning. Please forward this to grad. students.

Hi all,
If you are graduating soon from your masters and planning to apply for a
Ph.D abroad, you might consider the following opportunity.
International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)
The main objectives of the IPRS program are to:
* attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas
of research strength in Australian higher education providers; and
* support Australia's research effort.
The IPRS program enables international students to undertake a
postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience
with leading Australian researchers.
Scholarships are open to international students of all countries (except
New Zealand) and are available for a period of two years for a Masters
by research degree or three years for a Doctorate by research degree.
The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for
scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependants (Please
note that if you win the award, the concerned university will provide
the maintenance grant).
Applications for a scholarship need to be made directly to a
participating university. Universities are responsible for determining
the selection process by which scholarships are allocated to
applicants. Contact details for Australian universities may be obtained
from http://www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/Sia/en/Links/Universities.htm
<ttp://www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/Sia/en/Links/Universities.htm%22> ou
The allocation of IPRS grants to participating universities is based on
a formula that is reflective of their overall research performance.
More details of the program could be obtained from
http://www.endeavour.dest.gov.au/australian_institutions/international_post…
Please let me know if you need more details in this regard.
Best regards,
Muthu

of "Feeding a Hungry Planet". This course will be aimed at students
across the university and will likely be listed as a 1000 or 2000 level

It would be great to have a discussion about what should be contained in
the course. So, I am inviting you to participate in a discussion about
the "Feeding a Hungry Planet" course.
When: Thursday, May 15 at 10 AM
Where: Room 218
What: I will present a possible course outline, though keep in mind
that your input is important to further shaping of the outline.
If you cannot make this meeting, please send me your thoughts by email.
