DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
*Issues in Health Care:
Deviance, Medicalization, and Social Control*
SOC7370 (A01)
Winter 2010, 3 credit hours
*Time & Place: *Wednesdays from 1:00pm -- 4:00pm; 335 Isbister Building
Instructor: Dr. Christopher J. Fries

Telephone: 474-7871 (with voice mail)
As Foucault has pointed out, the institution of medicine is about much
more than providing health care. Medicine is a key apparatus of social
control in advanced liberal societies such as Canada. Sociologists have
been studying medicalization---the extension of scientific-medical
authority into areas of social life including the tendency to view
undesirable conduct as --illness? requiring medical intervention---for
decades. What are the consequences of medicalization for society and how
we understand ourselves? In which ways are the engines of medicalization
shifting? How is medicalization part of larger cultural developments in
the societies of the West? What role do the --psy? disciplines play in a
medicalized framing of the self? These questions and debates, among
others, will be examined in this seminar through the detailed and
critical consideration of three recent texts concerning the sociological
and philosophical consequences of medicalization.
_Student Providing Aligned Research and Knowledge (SPARK) Pilot
Program <http://www.csps-efpc.gc.ca/dpr/spark-eclair/index-eng.asp>_
It is with great enthusiasm that I am writing to provide you with
information on the Canada School of Public Service's _Student Providing
Aligned Research and Knowledge (SPARK) Pilot Program
<http://www.csps-efpc.gc.ca/dpr/spark-eclair/index-eng.asp>_. SPARK is
operated in partnership with the Public Service Commission, as part of
their Research Affiliate Program (RAP).
Under the program, selected graduate students work from their campus
location; are paid for research projects in the field of public
administration and public policy; gain knowledge and experience
addressing practical, real-life issues; and can potentially be hired
into an indeterminate position upon graduation. Students can also
receive course credit for their SPARK project if the following
requirements are met:
* The student is enrolled in a course that is scheduled concurrently
with their employment under SPARK;
* The research being conducting under SPARK is of applicable subject
matter; and
* The course professor and the hiring organization are aware of and
in agreement with the arrangement.
Examples of projects undertaken to date include researching:
* Selected Economic Trends in Canada's Economic Regions from 1996 to
2006; and
* International experiences in addressing the misuse of alcohol, and
addressing the misuse and diversion of pharmaceuticals.
We kindly seek your assistance to share this information with all
graduate students who might be interested in this opportunity. Students
can view and apply for jobs at:
http://jobs-emplois.gc.ca/rap-par/index-eng.htm. SPARK opportunities are
clearly indentified in the title of the posting under the link "Current
opportunities
<http://jest-orae.psc-cfp.gc.ca/JEST-ORAE/advsrch.do?cnsrch=1&lang=en&p=10>",
and will be made available on an on-going basis -- so it is important
for students to check the site regularly.
For more information on the program and application process, please
consult the SPARK website
<http://www.csps-efpc.gc.ca/dpr/spark-eclair/index-eng.asp>. If you have
any questions or concerns regarding the program in general, please let
us know via spark-eclair(a)csps-efpc.gc.ca

Hello Graduate Students!
Anita and I have been busy planning a field tour for the introductory
agriculture course: Natural Resources and Primary Agricultural
Production (AGRIC 1500). Basically, its an introduction to agriculture
(plant and animal) for the first year students in the faculty. This
would be a great opportunity for you to broaden your knowledge base
about Canadian (and specifically Manitoban) agriculture.
We will be visiting a berry farm, a sheep farm, a grain farm and the Ian
N. Morrison Research Station (to learn about soil and riverbed
ecology). There is lots to learn at each stop and you never know when
you might need to know something about one of these areas (think job
interviews, networking etc).
The tour is on Saturday, September 19, 2009. There is limited space
available, so if you are interested, please talk to either Anita or
myself about joining us!
Hope to see you there,
Victoria

Subject: Curling team
Date: Wed, 09 Sep 2009 14:20:44 -0500
From: Holly Derksen <umtayl56(a)cc.umanitoba.ca>
To: Bev Godard <godardbd(a)ms.umanitoba.ca>
Hello all,
We're putting together a Plant Science Grad Students team to play in the Aggie Row Curling League and we want you on our team!! The league runs out of the Pembina Curling Club at 4:30 pm every Friday. If you have never curled before, or don't even know what it's all about, this league is the perfect opportunity to learn about one of Canada's favourite passtimes. The league has curlers with a wide range of experience, so don't worry about being the only inexperienced curler out there. We're hoping to get enough people interested so that you won't have to commit to coming every Friday - unless you want.
Please email myself (Holly), umtayl56(a)cc.umanitoba.ca[1], or come
talk to me if you're interested.
Hope to hear from you!
-Holly
For more information, see the following item from last week's
Staff Matters:
The AGGIE ROW CURLING LEAGUE has existed for many years, bringing
together people from the university Faculty of Agricultural and Food
Sciences and the Agriculture Canada Cereal Research Station for a time
of social comraderie and fun. In recent years the faculty teams have
been organized without regard to department affiliation so meeting new
people is assured. Teams are made up as evenly as possible, trying to
distribute the experienced players in the positions of third and skip
so that the people who are new to curling can have fun and learn as
they go play. Your skill level is unimportant as nobody is ever as bad
as they think they are, or as good! We play out of the Pembina Curling
Club which is located close by at 1341 Pembina Hwy across from the
Holiday Inn. Games are on Fridays after work at 4:30, and the latest
teams are off the ice is 7pm so there still plenty of time to do
something else after. The league is really just for fun (and bragging
rights on Monday mornings).T
he league finishes with a final banquet or dinner following the last evening of curling. As far as equipment needed to play, all you really need is a curling broom and a clean pair of shoes. Friends and family are welcome to curl, with preference being given to employees who are signed up in time. For those who cannot commit to playing every Friday, you?re welcome to find someone to share a spot with. We are now organizing for the season.
