Subject: [Gs-suppstaff-contacts] "Copyright" day and evening sessions for graduate students
[University of Manitoba Faculty of Graduate Studies]
________________________________
The Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Copyright Office encourage you to attend an information session about copyright.
Graduate students who incorporate a substantial portion of a copyrighted work or a complete copyrighted work such as a photograph, map, diagram, figure or journal article into their theses must have permission from the copyright holder to do so. Adapting a work requires permission as well. Permission is required whether the copyrighted material came from the Web, a book, a journal or a government source. Attend an information session to find out what you need to know while preparing your thesis - when permission is needed, how to get permission, how to find free resources, the details of the Copyright Act and its fair dealing provision, and more.
Who would benefit from attending a session?
* Graduate students writing or preparing to write their theses
* Faculty and graduate chairs advising or supervising graduate students
* Staff assisting graduate students with their theses.

Ian N. Morrison Award for Advanced Studies in Crop Protection
An endowment fund has been established at the University of Manitoba as a memorial tribute to Dr. Ian N. Morrison (1947-2006). The purpose of the award is to provide support for graduate students in the Department of Plant Science. The scholarship, valued at the available annual interest from the fund (currently approximately $3000) up to a maximum value of the tuition for the first year of graduate studies, will be offered to one or more graduate students who:
(1) have completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Food Science;
(2) have demonstrated academic excellence with a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 in their last 60 credit hours of study;
(3) have enrolled as a full-time student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba and undertakes a graduate program in the Department of Plant Science investigating an aspect of crop protection.
Preference may be given, in order of priority, to: (a) a student entering or in the second year of the graduate program and (b) to a student whose project is related to the advancement of knowledge on the biology and/or management of weeds.
Applications must be submitted to Dr. Peter McVetty, Head, Department of Plant Science by October 19, 2012.
Applications include:
1. Summary of research project (one page maximum);
2. All academic transcripts/student histories (photocopies are sufficient);
3. Curriculum vitae;
4. Two letters of recommendation from academic staff (each one page maximum).
Biographical Information:
Dr. Morrison joined the Department of Plant Science in 1976, later serving as Head from 1989 to 1996. In the mid-80s he worked in Pakistan for almost two years as an oilseed agronomist on a CIDA project. In September 1996 Dr. Morrison was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry, and Home Economics at the University of Alberta.
In his 20 year tenure at the University of Manitoba, Ian Morrison touched the lives of many people including over 20 graduate students and hundreds of undergraduate students. Many of these have gone on to become influential in the agricultural sector. His research was instrumental in providing growers with new tools and methods for weed control and crop protection. In recognition of his work, Ian Morrison received the Excellence in Weed Science award from the Canadian Weed Science Society, and was made a Fellow of the Weed Science Society of America.

Subject: Grad Student Comments - Dr. R. Gulden (Early Tenure Application)
Grad Students,
Dr. Robert Gulden will be applying for early tenure this fall. We have received a request from the tenure committee to supply any comments we may have on the applicant in order to assist with their decision. As grad students, we have frequent interactions with the faculty and should be able to grant the request. Please submit any comments you may have to laurene.davy(a)ad.umanitoba.ca via email by Friday, September 14, 2012.
Thank you,
Mary

Subject: Input for plant science seminar series
I have received only 1 faculty response and 1 grad student response to my request for seminar ideas for the fall term. Please take 10 minutes to think about what topic - or perhaps what speaker will interest you this fall or winter term. The seminar series is only as good as we make. Come on, do your part!
thanks!!
