Subject: IMPORTANT: Grad Student Symposium at NDSU
Hi all,
Hopefully everyone has had a chance to look over the PSGSS website
(http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/plantsciences/graduate/gsa/symposium-2013) by now. I understand that this has been sent to us quite last minute but the registration deadline for the symposium (whether or not you're presenting) is January 20. This means you have twelve days to decide if you'd like to attend and to notify me. The cost to attend is free as PSGSA will be covering it as well as providing the transportation.
For that reason, we ask that you consider this carefully and ensure that the dates (March 22 and 23, 2013) will work for you and you're serious about attending.
This will be a short drive to a fun and more casual symposium with other grad students, last year was a great success due to the large turnout of students from other schools so we want to make sure we have a good turnout this year to support NDSU! Attached is a form that can be submitted to Marley (CRC) or me (150 agriculture) by January 18 if you wish to register. If you have any questions please feel free to send me an email (Mary_Price(a)umanitoba.ca)!
Mary

Subject: New graduate course on ag sustainability with Dr. Henry Janzen
Hi everyone ... fyi, this term we are offering a graduate reading course with Dr. Henry Janzen on evaluating and improving the sustainability of agricultural systems. The outline for the course is attached for your reference. Please share this announcement with other staff and students in your department.
Although the course will be offered under the course number, SOIL 7250 Topics in Soil Science, it will be broad and multi-disciplinary in nature; therefore, we would welcome graduate students from outside as well as well as inside the Dept. of Soil Science. We intend to meet on a weekly basis on Wednesday afternoons, connecting with Henry in person in some cases by videoconference or telephone in others. Our first class session in the last week of January, so if you or anyone else you know is interested, please let me know as soon as possible.
For those of you that don't know Henry, he is a prominent Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research scientist who works on "big picture" issues such as the effects of agricultural management on carbon in agricultural soils, quantifying and reducing net greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural ecosystems, interactions between agroecosystems and the global carbon cycle, nitrogen exchanges between agroecosystems and the atmosphere and long-term trends in the productivity and other ecosystem services of farmlands. Although Henry is a soil scientist by training, he has a very broad range of research interests and expertise; therefore, his adjunct professor's appointment at the University of Manitoba is with the Dept. of Animal Science.
Thanks!

Subject: 29th Annual PSGSS
Hi all!
Hopefully everyone had a relaxing winter break! As most of you probably remember, last year we hosted the 28th annual plant science grad students symposium for students from U of M, from the University of Saskatchewan and from North Dakota State University. It was a great success and everyone had a blast!
NDSU will be hosting the symposium this year in Fargo, ND from March 22-23. We will be organizing the trip for all who are interested in going. This is a great chance to practice oral presentations but in a more laid back environment as well as an opportunity to meet fellow plant science grad students!
The deadline for registration is January 20. I will be sending out another email next week to begin figuring out who is interested in presenting. In the mean time, take some time to check out the symposium website at:
http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/plantsciences/graduate/gsa/symposium-2013
