Please be advised that the online application form for the 2017-2018 Vanier CGS Competition is now open in Research Net. Kindly distribute this information to potential Ph.D. students and refer them to the FGS Awards Database for additional information: http://webapps.cc.umanitoba.ca/gradawards/index.asp?WCI=SearchForm&WCE=brow… Please be reminded that this Tri-Council award is open to Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and International Students.
There are few new items to note for the award:
Deadlines:
1. September 15, 2017
* Students must submit transcripts to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by this deadline
* A Nomination Letter from the Department Head must be submitted to our office by this deadline. The Nomination letter must include the following information:
i. Rationale for the choice of candidate:
o Highlight the factors used to determine why the student is deserving of a Vanier CGS. Clearly articulate the excellence of the candidate according to the three selection criteria: academic excellence, research potential and leadership (potential and demonstrated ability). Ensure that the letters focus on leadership potential and demonstrated abilities.
ii. Research training environment:
o Elaborate on the appropriateness of the supervisor in terms of resources, funding, publications, their research and training environment. Elaborate on the funding, facilities/resources and personnel that will be made available to support the candidate as they carry out their proposed research and develop their leadership potential.
o Discuss how the research interests/background of the student and supervisor align with the institution's priorities (Ensure that claim about uniqueness of the research environment are accurate.)
o Discuss how the supervisor's commitment will be available to support the candidate in furthering their professional and leadership development.
o If known, comment on the research group and/or faculty with whom the candidate will interact and how the Canadian institution will support the development of the candidate's leadership potential. If unknown, please address the reasons behind why the candidate has not selected a supervisor and research environment.
iii. Rationale of recruiting the candidate:
o Outline how the institution's research environment will foster the student's research interest and Leadership skills.
o Elaborate on the commitment from the department or university as to what kind of benefits they will offer the potential scholar.
iv. Recruitment and student mobility:
o Comment on how the institution's nomination of the candidate promotes the recruitment of new foreign or Canadian candidates to Canadian institutions.
o If the candidate has completed a previous degree within your institution, provide an explanation as to why it is in the candidate's best interest to stay at the same institution (i.e. research/paid institution (or its affiliate), supervisor or co-supervisor, availability of specialized equipment).

1. Personal Leadership Statement
This document should present to the committee a clear statement of what challenges and opportunities have shaped your doctoral research.
When crafting your Personal Leadership Statement, consider the following points:
* What led you to doctoral research? How has your relevant life experiences and personal circumstances (may include administrative responsibilities, maternity/parental leave, childrearing, illness, cultural or community responsibilities, socio-economic context, or health-related family responsibilities) shaped your academic, research, leadership choices, challenges, and successes.
* How has your personal life driven you to share and disseminate your research?
* How have you created opportunities to make change, and how have you overcome obstacles to your vision?
* How have you fostered your ability to lead others, and how have you leveraged that skill?
* Why have you chosen to undertake your PhD at the nominating institution? How does your nominating institution provide an environment that nurtures both your academic and your leadership skills?
* Leadership can take many forms. When crafting this statement, be sure to outline not just your accomplishments for the committee, but how those accomplishments required you to leverage your leadership skills to achieve your goals.
Your academic transcript, your CCV and your reference letters will provide details of your commitments and accomplishments, but this essay gives you the opportunity to present the overarching narrative about your life, leadership accomplishments, and research goals for the selection committee.

Hope you’re well.
Our lab is hosting a short field day on July 18 from 9:30-11:30am featuring the Participatory Plant Breeding program. We’ll be displaying the evaluation trial of farmer-bred wheat and oat lines and hoping to have interesting discussion around how these lines can be incorporated in breeding trials and research.
We are also inviting Manitoba plant breeders from research stations to come as well. This is special event for graduate students and plant breeders only, not to general agricultural public.
Could you please circulate this poster to the graduate students in the department? I have attached a .jpg version (because they tend to show up in the actual body of the email and not just an attachment) and a .pdf version that maybe you can (or I can) put up in the lounge and offices.

Hello Bev,
Thank you for offering to contact your students to let them know about the opportunity to work with a Consultant on our biodiversity baseline study.
The Office of Sustainability (OOS) is initiating a biodiversity baseline study and assessment of the river bottom forest with a focus on the vegetation and habitat of the University of Manitoba's Fort Garry Campus Point Lands, Southwood Lands, Glenlea Research Station and Ian N. Morrison Research Farm (Assessment Areas).
A Request for Quotations (RFQ) has been sent out to Consulting firms. Within the RFQ, the Office of Sustainability has required that the Consultant include accommodation for student participation.
The study will include a desktop analysis as well as field investigations. The desktop analysis will include a literature review and desktop analysis of the Assessment Areas using available aerial imagery. This information will be used to develop the field investigation which shall:
* Describe the soil type.
* Assess biodiversity, habitat and long-term health.
* Describe vegetation types and their composition and condition.
* Describe the age class of trees.
* Describe the understory health.
* Verify the presence/absence of protected plant species (such as those traditionally used for medicine, subsistence and cultural purposes, and other vegetation information) and invasive species.
* Make recommendations on native conservation areas and new planting species.
* Describe evidence of wildlife species and wildlife species seen.
* Describe the habitat that supports vegetative and wildlife communities identified.
* Verify the presence/absence of protected wildlife species and species of interest (such as those traditionally used for subsistence and cultural purposes).
* Make recommendations on conserving existing vegetation in areas where it has been eroded or removed.
* Describe the types of native vegetation that should be used for naturalized areas.
* Provide GIS Mapping of collected data.
The timeline for the Study is:
- July 4, 2017 - kickoff
- September 15, 2017- field investigations complete
- December 15, 2017 - final reports
*These dates may not reflect the actual employment period of the student.
