Peter B.E. McVetty Plant Breeding Scholarship in the Department of Plant Science
The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize students who have achieved academic excellence in a Master's or Ph.D. program in plant breeding in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba. One or more scholarships will be offered to graduate students who:
* are enrolled full-time in their second year of a Master's program, or in their second or third year of a Ph.D. program in plant breeding in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba;
* have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5;
* have demonstrated achievement in plant breeding research applicable to the Canadian Prairies.
Applications must be submitted to Dr. Fouad Daayf, Head, Department of Plant Science by February 26, 2018 and must include:
* A covering letter describing: a) the status and progress of the applicant's research program and coursework; b) the value of the applicant's research project to cultivar development in the Canadian Prairies;
* An abstract of the applicant's research project;
* A copy (photocopy is acceptable) of the transcript of the applicant's graduate student program academic record;
* A letter of recommendation from one member of academic staff.
While the scholarship is open to all graduate students engaged in plant breeding research, preference will be given to graduate students engaged in canola/rapeseed plant breeding research.

Hello everyone,
Your Plant Science Graduate Student Association is offering an opportunity to learn how to analyze statistics using the R statistical program with a free, full day workshop offered by Dr. Depeng Jiang of the U of M's BioStatistics group (Bannatyne campus). This workshop will be held on Saturday February 10th, 2018 and consist of both lectures and hands-on practice on statistical analysis using of R. The workshop will likely be held in room 137 (computer lab) in the agriculture building. If you wish to use your own computer, a further email will be sent out with those details
Participants to this workshop should have a working knowledge of experimental design and ANOVA, with experience using SAS or another statistical software. No previous experience using R is needed. Attached to this email is the outline for the workshop provided by Dr. Jiang.
Please sign-up for this workshop by Monday February 5th, 2018 in order to secure your spot. A sign up sheet will be put up in the Graduate student lounge. You may also email me directly with your intentions to attend or if you have any questions concerning the workshop. Lunch will be provided.

Hello everyone,
This is a reminder that the PSGSA will once again be hosting coffee breaks every Monday and Thursday at 10 am in the Grad Student's Lounge, starting tomorrow Monday, January 8th. This is a great opportunity to socialize with your colleagues and meet other students! The PSGSA will provide coffee and tea, but feel free to bring some treats or baked goods to share! We specifically encourage new Grad students to join coffee breaks.
