Dear students: Forwarding this message to those who are looking for accommodation.
*****
Hello to the Advisor Exchange,
As the January 2024 semester approaches, students attending UM worldwide seek accommodations as they begin their studies. In helping these students find accommodations, we are reaching out today to encourage you to send students to St John's College Residence.
St John's College Residence
The College Residence is a small community of 100 students where we host students from various faculties, including Science, Arts, Business, Nursing, First Year Students, ICM, and other areas. Our Residence is all single rooms and includes a complete meal plan, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays and brunch and dinner on weekends. The community includes students of all ages and locations, including those from Manitoba, other provinces, and other countries. Residence dons are on call every night, ready to respond to emergencies and counsel students through homesickness, conflicts with friends, illness, etc., and the St John's College Residence Council provides leadership opportunities and organizes education and social events.
More information about Residence applications and rates can be found here<https://umanitoba.ca/st-johns-college/residence>.
St John's College Membership and Experience
In addition to our Residence, St John's College offers student memberships to those looking for a small community on the UM campus to study, meet friends, and receive financial support. Through our student membership, the College offers benefits such as $180,000 worth of scholarships and bursaries each year, discounts on our food and beverage services, monthly events held by our student council, and access to study carrels.
Students can become members of the College here<https://umanitoba.ca/st-johns-college/student-experience#membership>. Scholarship and bursary information can be found here<https://umanitoba.ca/st-johns-college/student-experience/scholarships-bursa…'>.
Questions and Further Information
For questions about Residence, please contact me at (204) 474-8363 or matthew.bowman(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:matthew.bowman@umanitoba.ca>. I would happily arrange a tour of the College and Residence for yourself or with a group of interested students.
To request that print materials (posters, brochures, etc.) about the College, Scholarships, and Residence be mailed to you, please contact Marissa Naylor, Marketing and Communications Officer, at marissa.naylor(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:marissa.naylor@umanitoba.ca>.
Thank you for all the work that you do for UM students.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Colleagues,
Please help us to spread the word about these three PhD positions at Lund University. The four-year positions are fully funded by the ERC Advanced Grant PERENNIAL<https://portal.research.lu.se/sv/projects/is-there-a-perennial-future-of-ag…>.
PERENNIAL is a cross disciplinary project aiming to investigate the climate mitigation potential when transforming agriculture from being based on annual crops to be based on newly domesticated perennial crops. Related to this topic we now have three PhD positions focusing on:
1. Measurements of greenhouse gases of perennial grain agriculture (Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science)
https://lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:678707/
2. Modelling of carbon fluxes and carbon sequestration in perennial grain agriculture (Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science)
https://lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:678977/
3. Farmers' adoption of newly domesticated perennial grain crops (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies)
https://lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:678881/
We appreciate if you can spread this information to tentative candidates and suitable forums.
Sorry for cross postings.

PERENNIAL <https://portal.research.lu.se/sv/projects/is-there-a-perennial-future-of-ag…> is funded by the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant 2023). In this project we will investigate whether a shift from annual to perennial grain crops as the basis for food production is possible, and identify the major opportunities and obstacles for such a "perennial revolution". Since the Neolithic Revolution the world food system has been dominated by annual crops (cereals, legumes, and oil seeds) covering 70% of global croplands. The use of annual plants disrupts agro-ecological processes every season, resulting in soil erosion, nutrient losses, and greenhouse gas emissions from machinery and soils. The costly practices of managing annuals, including a strong dependence on herbicides and mineral fertilizers, partly explain the high indebtedness and low returns in agriculture. A shift from annual to perennial grains that are planted once and harvested for many consecutive years, could revolutionize agriculture and revitalize rural society. It could solve problems associated with annuals and increase the potential for adaptation to climate change. Advances in plant breeding have shown that a shift to perennials is possible within a few decades, but it would challenge powerful vested interests. To investigate the prospects of a perennial revolution, we will: a) conduct a systematic critique of the current political economy of agriculture, b) suggest desirable, viable, and achievable perennial alternatives to annual monocultures, and c) develop a strategy for change. We complement social science expertise with that of plant breeding, agro-ecology, soil, and plant science. Social Fields Theory is applied to study the political economy of agriculture including the politics of seeds and agrochemicals and Soil Health theory to suggest alternatives. We then incorporate ecological feedbacks to develop an Agricultural Treadmill Theory and apply Transition Theory to study social change. Using mixed methods, we will conduct discourse analysis, network analysis, and modelling at multiple scales including farms, river basins, and jurisdictions.

Subject: Seminar - Nov 24-Armes200-2:30pm-Edel Perez Lopez
Hi PSGSA,
There is a November 24 seminar from 2:30 - 3:30 pm at 200 Armes by Dr. Edel Perez Lopez, whom many of UM Plant Sci people might already be familiar with. Please advertise/circulate to the dept. if you haven't yet. Registration is free.
Details: "Understanding insects, bacteria and protists to achieve a sustainable agriculture."
Since 2020, Dr. Edel Pérez López's lab<https://edelabcriv.com/> has been focusing on understanding emergent plant pathogens. One of his recent achievements, the identification and characterization of effector proteins used by the clubroot pathogen during infection, holds the potential to bring significant advancements to the canola industry.
His lab is also exploring the effects of climate change on insect pest distributions and the consequences of biological invasions by these pests.
In this seminar, Dr. Pérez López will provide an overview of his scientific contributions and his passionate advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community in plant and microbiology sciences. He will also discuss his collaboration with various scientific societies to promote more sustainable and inclusive agricultural practices.
Following Dr. Pérez López's seminar, join us in the SSA Lounge (209 Armes) for a coffee and conversations panel talk titled "Breaking barriers: 2SLGBTQIA+ representation and inclusion in science."
