In agriculture, externalities arising from production, such as air and water pollution, or positive Ecological Goods and Services (EG&S), such as biodiversity, are not priced through the marketplace and hence are either overproduced (externalities) or underproduced (EG&S), since farmers' production decisions will not account for these external costs or benefits. This provides a rationale for government intervention by introducing either regulations and penalties (the stick approach), or subsidies and incentives (the carrot). The purpose of this funding was to better enable CAPI to conduct independent research and assessments of the long-term challenges and opportunities facing the agriculture and agri-food industry; contribute to the agricultural policy research process in Canada; and develop strong collaborations with stakeholders, the policy research community and provincial governments in order to foster a broad-based dialogue on key policy issues. CAPI has commissioned an evaluation firm, RCGT - Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton to conduct an independent performance evaluation of the Institute’s relevance and performance for the 2021 to 2022 period. This evaluation is required under the terms of CAPI’s grant. L’ICPA a demandé à Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton (RCGT), une société d’évaluation, d’effectuer une évaluation indépendante du rendement et de la pertinence de l’Institut pour la période 2021-2022. Cette évaluation est requise dans le cadre de la subvention de l’ICPA. The industrialization of agriculture has resulted in greater profitability, but not necessarily more sustainable farming. How can this be rectified? This month’s One Great Graph is a suggestion of exactly how to measure Canada’s agri-food sustainability. These targets are the result of consultations with organizations, companies, and government representatives in Canada undertaken by DMci Strategies in 2020. The most oft-mentioned target was sourcing sustainable ingredients (44% of participants), followed by the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and land use (16% each). This month’s featured reading describes how these metrics were impacted after implementing green practices on 34 Swedish farms. “A Green Lean approach to global competition and climate change in the agricultural sector – A Swedish case study” (Barth and Melin, 2018) serves as a model for any developed agri-food sector wanting to balance productivity and environmental outcomes, while being realistic about constraints such as time, labour, and technology. The Green Lean methodology uses lean processing tools (such as audit reports) to achieve green outcomes such as lower emissions. Many of these 34 farms experienced real change: from reduced transport time and increased feed efficiency, to fewer working hours and better team morale.
