Ian N. Morrison Award for Advanced Studies in Crop Protection An endowment fund has been established at the University of Manitoba as a memorial tribute to Dr. Ian N. Morrison (1947-2006). The purpose of the award is to provide support for graduate students in the Department of Plant Science. The scholarship, valued at the available annual interest from the fund (currently approximately $3000) up to a maximum value of the tuition for the first year of graduate studies, will be offered to one or more graduate students who: (1) have completed the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Food Science; (2) have demonstrated academic excellence with a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5 in their last 60 credit hours of study; (3) have enrolled as a full-time student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba and undertakes a graduate program in the Department of Plant Science investigating an aspect of crop protection. Preference may be given, in order of priority, to: (a) a student entering or in the second year of the graduate program and (b) to a student whose project is related to the advancement of knowledge on the biology and/or management of weeds. Applications must be submitted to Dr. Peter McVetty, Head, Department of Plant Science by October 19, 2012. Applications include: 1. Summary of research project (one page maximum); 2. All academic transcripts/student histories (photocopies are sufficient); 3. Curriculum vitae; 4. Two letters of recommendation from academic staff (each one page maximum). Biographical Information: Dr. Morrison joined the Department of Plant Science in 1976, later serving as Head from 1989 to 1996. In the mid-80s he worked in Pakistan for almost two years as an oilseed agronomist on a CIDA project. In September 1996 Dr. Morrison was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry, and Home Economics at the University of Alberta. In his 20 year tenure at the University of Manitoba, Ian Morrison touched the lives of many people including over 20 graduate students and hundreds of undergraduate students. Many of these have gone on to become influential in the agricultural sector. His research was instrumental in providing growers with new tools and methods for weed control and crop protection. In recognition of his work, Ian Morrison received the Excellence in Weed Science award from the Canadian Weed Science Society, and was made a Fellow of the Weed Science Society of America. Some of these National Awards are NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council), SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council), CIHR (formerly MRC - Medical Research Council and NHRDP - National Health Research Development Program) or any similar national agency. MHRC (Manitoba Health Research Council) is another agency to which eligible students must apply. If UMGF recipients who are eligible for a National Award do not apply, the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship shall not be renewed unless there are special circumstances and for which a compelling case is made and then approved by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies."
