Thanks Muthu ------------ Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Plant & Crop Photosynthesis *University of Nottingham, United Kingdom Reference : SCI525X1* *Closing Date : Tuesday 28 October 2008* Applications are invited for the above post in the Division of Plant and Crop Sciences. The successful candidate will join an active research laboratory investigating avenues for the improvement of leaf and canopy photosynthesis in crop plants. The Plant and Crop Sciences Division is internationally acclaimed as a centre of excellence for fundamental and applied research underpinning our understanding of agriculture, food production and quality and the natural environment. This post, funded by the BBSRC, will investigate the role of photoprotective processes and photooxidative stress in a major crop plant, rice. The impact of altered levels of photoprotection on abiotic stress resistance and photosynthetic productivity will be tested using a range of physiological and biochemical parameters and will form part of a research programme with firm international collaborations. The successful candidate will 1) carry out experiments to identify points of limitation for photosynthesis and growth in transgenic tropical rice plants, and 2) perform biochemical and molecular analyses of transgenic tropical rice plants. Candidates must have experience and practical knowledge of mechanisms of leaf photosynthesis and its regulation (gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence), photosynthetic metabolism and protein analysis. Experience of rice crop physiology and RNA analysis and modelling of canopy processes is highly desirable. Candidates should possess a PhD and a background in plant and crop physiology and a willingness to travel to collaborating laboratories. An essential attribute is a desire to apply basic plant science knowledge to crop improvement. Salary will be £25,888 per annum. This post is available from 1 December 2008 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of three years. Thanks Muthu -------- Postdoctoral position - Plant Biotechnology Wageningen UR, Laboratory of Genetics Wageningen, (Gelderland), 38 hours per week Job descriptionProject Information: The ERGO project ?Design of a decision matrix to assess GM crop impact on the detrital food web? aims to investigate how to determine risks of genetically modified food crop plants potentially damaging a healthy soil ecosystem by monitoring the effect of GM plants on detrivore soil organisms. In the project, transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica plants will be constructed expressing Arabidopsis genes that are expected to enhance the content of specific anti-nutritional glucosinolates. These plants will be used by the collaborating partner in the project, the department of Animal Ecology of the Earth and Life Sciences faculty of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, to study their effect on detrivore soil organisms. The project is expected to start soon. Job Description: Arabidopsis transcription factor genes known to control aliphatic glucosinolate biosynthesis will be cloned behind different promoters to create binary constructs for transformation of Arabidopsis, Brassica oleracea and B. rapa using Agrobacterium tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes mediated transformation methods. Transgenic plants need to be evaluated for gene expression and glucosinolate levels in pots and if possible in the field. Successfully modified plants will be multiplied for use in detrivore feeding studies by the VU partner. RequirementsRequired education/skills:Doctorate You have obtained a PhD in Plant Sciences or (Plant) Biotechnololgy, with a strong focus on molecular biology. You have experience in binary vector construction, plant transformations and analysis of transgenic plants. Experience with Arabidopsis and Brassica transformation is considered an advantage. You have published in high-rating international scientific journals. You value the benefits of collaboration, but are well able to perform independent research.
