All, Welcome to 2022. I would like to thank you all for all the hard work in 2021. We are beginning this year back where we were at this time last year, teaching on-line and facing another surge in cases. To our co-workers that were unfortunate in 2021 to contract covid, I hope that all have recovered (or are recovering). We need to be alert and stick to the protocols that have proven to work in reducing cases as we begin the new year. Our plans in 2021 for more intensive research were set back with covid cases at Carman and building restrictions on campus. We worked hard and I hope we had a relatively successful 2021. We saw colleagues leave (thank you for all your dedication to the department) and there were new additions to Plant Science in 2021 and we will continue to experience arrivals and departures in 2022. We are anticipating the hiring of two new academics this year (Weeds Chair and a genomics academic). To the technicians, graduate students, support staff, post docs and research associates, thank you for all your hard work in keeping the department, academic programs and research programs functioning under stressful conditions. Your contributions have not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for your expertise and dedication. We will be trying a new leadership model in 2022 with three acting Associate Heads: Academic (Rob Gulden); Field Research (Rob Duncan); and Controlled Environments (Belay Ayele). Please welcome them and assist them in their endeavours. I am hopeful that we will be able to get past the restrictions that covid-19 has placed upon our work and homelife environments in 2022. While 2021 allowed for greater interaction than in 2020, the omicron variant has demonstrated that vigilance is still required. Please be safe. Lastly, I would like to thank Dr. Claudio Stasolla for his leadership through the last year. Amongst the challenges of 2021, he led us through the priority planning for the department and I look forward to our continuing to both implement and revise the vision that our department has adopted. Change is inevitable and we need to continue to evolve as a department. All the best in 2022. All, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. As we all know, 2021 has been very challenging and we, as a Department, have tried to adapt and evolve to the rapidly changing scenarios. It has been my pleasure to serve as the Acting Head. It has been difficult and taxing, but equally rewarding. I wish to thank you all for the patience and support during my service. At the same time, I also apologize with those of you with whom I might have been abrasive at times; my intentions were good. A special appreciation goes to the GO colleagues; you did a superlative job. We had some disagreements, but your professionality was never doubted. We are extremely lucky to have you all. Finally, I wish to express my best wishes to the colleagues leading the Department in 2022. Let's keep fostering transparency and openness. Good luck! Stay safe and see you next year, Claudio

Holidays working alone

Hello All, We have received several emails recently on campus closures and services over the holidays as well as a notice of a stranger in Plant Science. Please review these emails if you will be working on campus over the holidays. As well, if you will be working on campus, please follow the work alone policy. * Do not conduct work involving hazardous material * Make sure someone knows where you are and expected length of work * If you are working alone for a long period of time, ask your contact to call you if they have not heard from you by a specified time * Make sure your contact knows o Your cell number o Lab phone number o Security services phone number 204-474-9341 The doors are supposed to be locked during the holiday closure, so lock doors behind you. Campus security can be contacted at any time if there is an issue or for the safewalk program. Safety Committee

positive case notification: Plant Science

Importance: High An individual who later tested positive for COVID-19 was last on the Fort Garry Campus on December 10th. The individual attended all rooms in the Ag Building Greenhouse, the Point (i.e. Plant Science Field Station BLDG) , and the Crop Technology Centre. All UM COVID-19 safety protocols were followed and the person is adhering to guidance from Public Health. Public health has investigated the case and has reached out to close contacts of the individual. If you were not contacted by Public Health and were in the above area on the above date, you can continue to self-monitor for symptoms. Should you develop symptoms use the Online COVID-19 Screening Tool<https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/> to determine if you should be tested. The spaces where the individual was present on campus have been appropriately cleaned and disinfected. All individuals in all UM indoor spaces are required to wear 3-ply reusable or disposable masks at all times. It is more important than ever that individuals who attend work or any on-campus activities in person strictly follow public health guidance including getting vaccinated, limiting close contacts outside of the home, practicing physical distancing, and staying home when sick, no matter how mild the symptoms. If you have symptoms that could be COVID-19, use the Online COVID-19 Screening Tool<https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/> to self-screen and get tested if that is what is recommended.
