Four leading independent agricultural organizations from Australia, Canada, the European Union, and United States have formed a collaborative initiative known as the Global Forum on Farm Policy and Innovation (GFFPI)<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0016OOoql40AUI71U0m6cHAsR8h5_QMDd6DpP216itTarg…> to increase the sustainability of agriculture across the world.
The purpose of the collaboration is to use existing evidence and emerging research to inform dialogue that can unlock new thinking and ideas. In doing so, the organizations believe that they can increase knowledge and understanding of key gaps and opportunities to deliver better outcomes for more sustainable agriculture around the world.
Read what CAPI’s Managing Director Tyler McCann has to say about this new collaboration: "Around the world agriculture must play a significant role in meeting critical economic, environmental, and food security goals. These are global challenges that require local solutions. While the local solutions will be different, there will be common threads, including the need for profitability, productivity, and growth. This is a significant opportunity to work together to advance policies that position agriculture as a solution-provider for these critical challenges."

RBC Tech for Nature<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0016OOoql40AUI71U0m6cHAsR8h5_QMDd6DpP216itTarg…> through RBC Foundation funds the 2022-2024 Doctoral Fellows program, which supports a transdisciplinary research network of doctoral students.
This cohort’s research focus will be ‘the Intersection of Trade, Environment, and Food Security’ and will cover five research papers, webinars, workshops, an advisory council, and professional development over the next two years.
CAPI proposes that our next Doctoral Fellowship Program develop expertise, original tools and strategies to identify the pressures on Canada’s land base arising from agricultural producers who are reacting to the new more uncertain trade environment, record high commodity prices, climate change and global food security concerns, by innovating and transforming their decision-making.
CAPI aims to create a dynamic, innovative and transdisciplinary research network specializing in this field. The program will run over two years (2022-2024) and will be guided by a mentoring and advisory team of industry, government and academic experts drawn from CAPI’s extensive stakeholder network.
CAPI will fund up to four Ph.D. students whose research focuses on either the economic, social, legal or environmental aspect of trade in agriculture and agri-food products, responding to scarcity and the new higher price environment, climate change and global food security concerns both at home and abroad.
Each selected researcher will receive $12,000 over 2 years via direct grants, as well as travel costs, as necessary. The outcome of selected projects will contribute to the production of a series of reports by CAPI, which will be published and disseminated broadly to policy makers and various stakeholders.

Do you see agriculture as a glass half full or half empty?<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9ni9Jp-X7uSbpmrujtyQ2CVmdpwZj00JKMXWAtjBKz…>
[https://files.constantcontact.com/4b5923da701/38483f8a-265d-4064-88d1-b0011…]<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9ni9Jp-X7uSbpmrujtyQ2CVmdpwZj00JKMXWAtjBKz…>
Do you see the glass half full or half empty? Is the world full of challenges or full of opportunities? A simple question can say a lot about how someone sees the world, a world which is usually in the middle. Few policy issues today illicit such differences of perspective as sustainability policy in Canada. As the federal government prepares to move forward with consultations on the Green Agriculture Plan<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9ni9Jp-X7uSbpmrujtyQ2CVmdpwZj00JKMXWAtjBKz…>, there is an opportunity, and need, to consider whether Canada’s sustainability policy glass is half full, half empty or somewhere in between.
Much about sustainability is an opportunity for Canadian farmers.
The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9ni9Jp-X7uSbpmrujtyQ2CVmdpwZj00JKMXWAtjBKz…> gained early momentum due to McDonald’s commitment<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9ni9Jp-X7uSbpmrujtyQ2CVmdpwZj00JKMXWAtjBKz…> to source at least 30% of its beef as verified sustainable beef. That momentum has built over the last year as restaurants and retailers, including Loblaws<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9ni9Jp-X7uSbpmrujtyQ2CVmdpwZj00JKMXWAtjBKz…> and Walmart<https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001T9ni9Jp-X7uSbpmrujtyQ2CVmdpwZj00JKMXWAtjBKz…>, have made commitments to purchasing Canadian certified sustainable beef.
For beef producers accustomed to managing tight margins, a premium for selling sustainable beef is a step in the right direction. And with increasing demand in Canada and around the world, these premiums should continue to grow.

Farm profitability is easy to measure; sustainability is not. The industrialization of agriculture has resulted in greater profitability, but not necessarily more sustainable farming. How can this be rectified?
This month’s One Great Graph is a suggestion of exactly how to measure Canada’s agri-food sustainability. These targets are the result of consultations with organizations, companies, and government representatives in Canada undertaken by DMci Strategies in 2020. The most oft-mentioned target was sourcing sustainable ingredients (44% of participants), followed by the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and land use (16% each).
By balancing economic profitably with sustainability targets, Canada can be a global leader in agri-food production as it continues to feed Canadians and the world.

Canada’s intentions to launch the Green Agricultural Plan is another opportunity to analyze farm competitiveness, productivity, and sustainability. This month’s featured reading describes how these metrics were impacted after implementing green practices on 34 Swedish farms.
“A Green Lean approach to global competition and climate change in the agricultural sector – A Swedish case study” (Barth and Melin, 2018) serves as a model for any developed agri-food sector wanting to balance productivity and environmental outcomes, while being realistic about constraints such as time, labour, and technology.
The Green Lean methodology uses lean processing tools (such as audit reports) to achieve green outcomes such as lower emissions. Many of these 34 farms experienced real change: from reduced transport time and increased feed efficiency, to fewer working hours and better team morale.
If Canada plans to invest in its agrifood sector, this case study is an honest look at what works and what doesn’t in terms of delivering business and environmental outcomes.

Several agrifood giants are now interested in regenerative agriculture, a practice that helps fight climate change and preserve biodiversity, but this type of process also produces more nutritious food, according to nutritionists, including Isabelle Marquis.
