INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP (IGSS) Please see me for further information and let me know if you are applying for this. Research Fields UNRESTRICTED Categories No categories available Citizenship No citizenship available Eligibility Beginning with the 2007/2008 academic session, scholarships will be offered to recognize and reward the excellence of international graduate students pursuing Master's or Ph.D. degrees at the University of Manitoba. The scholarships will be offered to students who: (1) are international students (i.e. those in Canada on study permits) continuing full-time study in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba in either: -the second year of a two-year Master's program, -the second year of a two-year Ph.D. program, -the second or third year of a three-year Ph.D. program, or -in the first year of a Ph.D. program after completing a Master's degree at the University of Manitoba; (2) are paying the international student tuition fee; (3) have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 over the equivalent of the last two completed years of study; (4) show great promise as researchers and as graduate students; (5) are not recipients of external funding that pays for their tuition This scholarship may be held with the UMGF and other awards offered by the University of Manitoba, but may not be held in conjunction with the International Graduate Student Entrance Scholarship (IGSES) or the International Graduate Student Bursary. Students may be considered for this scholarship in each year of eligible study. Students who are enrolled in a re-registration year are not eligible. Scholarships will only be applied against any outstanding international student tuition fee differential. Values $2000-$4000 Scholarships will be offered until available funds are exhausted. Funding will be confirmed on an annual basis. Currency Canadian Tenable at The University of Manitoba. Since several PhD students and some Master students will graduate or have their candidacy exams in this year , we thought that it is nice to gather some students who are interested in and devote certain time on preparing their theses or their candidacy exams or whatever they feel need to study. Whoever will be interested could email me liny3457(a)myumanitoba.ca<mailto:liny3457@myumanitoba.ca> or show up on the first study meeting (6-8 pm on Thursday, Jan 15, 2015 at the plant science lunch room). From: Rob Visser Sent: December-10-14 2:59 PM To: Bev Godard Subject: Adoption and parental leave announcement for the greenhouse manager Hi Everyone, My family and I are happy to announce the adoption of our daughter Harmony into our family. As a result, I will begin taking an eight month parental leave beginning January 12, 2015. It has been decided that Cathy Bay will become the interim Greenhouse Manager and a new technician assistant will be hired to fill her role. As many of you know, Cathy has been around the greenhouse area for almost 23 years and is experienced in all aspects of its operation. She is currently learning additional responsibilities that come with the manager role. I hope to bring Cathy around to some of you in the near future especially as it relates to key service providers for the controlled growth environment equipment. Let me take this opportunity to say how much I appreciate all the assistance given to me over the last year and a half as I became acquainted with the greenhouse manager role. TRAVEL Awards for Graduate Students

Morrison Travel Award for Graduate Students in Plant Science (approximate value $1400) Dr. Ian N. Morrison joined the Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba in 1976 as a weed scientist and later served as Head from 1989 to 1996. His research led to the development of new tools and methods for weed control and crop protection for western Canadian producers. Dr. Morrison moved to the University of Alberta in 1996 to become Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics. He touched the lives of over 20 graduate students and hundreds of undergraduate students. Helgason Travel Award for Graduate Students in Plant Science (approximate value $1325) Dr. Helgason joined the Department of Plant Science in 1947 as a plant breeder, serving as Head from 1975 to 1978, when he retired. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1980 and maintained an ongoing involvement in his research programme, graduate student committees, and departmental affairs until 1984. His outstanding career accomplishments include the development of corn inbreds and hybrids and the release of several barley varieties, including the six-row malting variety, Argyle. Lamari Travel Award for Graduate Studies in Plant Science (approximate value $1550) Dr. Lakhdar Lamari joined the Department of Plant Science in 1988 as a Post-Doctoral Fellow conducting cereal pathology research. He subsequently joined the Department as a professor of plant pathology in 1990. He conducted world-class and world-renown cereal pathology research with special emphasis on tan spot diseases of wheat. He was the first researcher in the world to unravel the mysterious host-pathogen interaction for this disease in wheat. He developed a computer-based plant disease measurement program called "Assess" that permits the easy and rapid quantification of the number of disease lesions on plant surfaces. This program took plant pathology research to a whole new level of precision. These awards will be offered to graduate students who: (1) have completed the first year of their M.Sc. or Ph.D. program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at The University of Manitoba; (2) have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0 (or equivalent) based on the last 60 credit hours; (3) will be attending a scientific meeting in a plant science related area and will be presenting the results of their research at the meeting (poster or oral presentation); (4) have demonstrated research ability based on the abstract submitted and the proposed research results to be presented at the meeting. The application form (one for all three awards) is attached. Funding must be used within the 12 month period following the date that the award recipients are announced. Recipients graduating within the 12 month period following the date of the award offer must use the funding no later than six months from the date of convocation. Recipients may not hold more than one of the Morrison Travel Award, the Lamari Travel Award, or the Helgason Travel Award in the same calendar year. Selection of the recipients will be based on: 1) academic performance; 2) comments from letters of recommendation; 3) the quality of the abstract submitted and of the proposed research results to be presented; 4) the potential value of the meeting to the student's development. Graduate Student Holiday Lunch Party!!

Hi Friends, On Friday, December 12th, we will be having our grad student holiday lunch party at 12:00 in room 218!! The plan is to order a bunch of pizzas and pop drinks will be provided. In order to plan how many pizzas to order, there will be a sign up sheet in the lounge to RSVP. If you are not around the lounge, feel free to send me an email to let me know if you are coming. Cost will be $5 per person and can be paid at the party. Friends are welcome!! If you are participating in the Secret Santa, please bring your gifts along as this is where we will be exchanging them.
