Hello to all,
Today a change was made to the FAFS Health Survey. The Agriculture Building and the Plant Science (Crop Research) building will no longer appear as combined on the FAFS Health Survey, they will appear as separate buildings. Please be mindful of that when completing the survey.
Thanks,
Bev

Subject: Survey + Scheduling updates
Hello everyone,
Hope you are doing well and thank you for your cooperation with the following changes:
*UPDATED* COVID Regulations
1. Fill out the FAFS surveys IN REAL TIME for EACH BUILDING (ie. Plant Science, Agriculture Building (includes the greenhouse), The Point, CDC, etc.)
* When you enter the building, fill out the survey AT THAT TIME.
* When you exit the building, fill out the survey AT THAT TIME.
NOTE: If you move between Plant Science and the Agriculture Building, these are two SEPARATE buildings and you need to fill out the survey as if you are physically entering and exiting two separate buildings.
Tip: Use the QR codes at the entrances/exits to make this faster.
The time period between your entering survey response and exiting survey response are tracked – it needs to be accurate to show how many people from your lab are physically present at one time.
2. If someone in your lab won’t be using their approved slot or wants to switch, you can BUT you need to let your PI/Lab Supervisor know (and they will alert the Department Head). You still need to fill out the FAFS surveys as if it was your slot.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
James DeCastro

Subject: [Adr-rlo] Call for Working Group members – UM SDG 6 Hub Working Group
Dear Colleagues:
The University of Manitoba was recognized for its ongoing research and initiatives that contribute to developments in clean water and sanitation by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI)<https://academicimpact.un.org/> and was asked to host (November 2018) a Hub page on the UNAI’s website for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.
A new working group is being formed for the U of M UNAI SDG6 Hub (terms of reference below).
Please forward this email to any faculty members and interested graduate students in your units that are doing working in the broader area of clean water and sanitation. The longer description of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6 is:
· achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all
· access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations
· improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally
· increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity
· implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate
· protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes
· expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies
· support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management
Working Group Terms of Reference:
· Participate in UNAI SDG Hub quarterly meetings and provide updates on UM activities in the area of advancing SDG6
· Work to create a comprehensive compilation of the activities going on at UM in all areas of the SDG 6 specifically
· Coordinate promotion of activities at UM in the area of SDG6 on the UNAI SDG 6 hub page and with the other 16 UNAI SDG Hubs
· Connect and collaborate with the other 16 UNAI SDG hubs to share activities, knowledge and information on UM activities and gain knowledge from the other hub hosts about their specific SDG initiatives (academic/research/other)
If interested, please have faculty or graduate students contact the Working Group co-chair: Janine.Harasymchuk(a)umantoba.ca<mailto:Janine.Harasymchuk@umantoba.ca>

This message is sent on behalf of Annemieke Farenhorst, Associate Dean (Research):
Dear Department Heads,
Please circulate the email below as soon as possible from the VPRIO within your units (to faculty and graduate students) and collect the names and emails of those who are interested.
If you have a number of people interested, please highlight up to 3 individuals that you see as champions in the area and forward the entire list to the ADR office at agresear(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:agresear@umanitoba.ca>, by 4:30 pm tomorrow Friday October 23.
Even though the message states that faculty and graduate students may contact Janine directly, the ADR Office is interested in knowing who might want to put their names forward, and which individuals are championed by their Department Heads.
Thanks and apologies for the tight turnaround time,
Heather

Dr. Carolee T. Bull, Department Head, Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology; Professor of Plant Pathology and Systematic Bacteriology; Director, Penn State Microbiome Center
The term translational taxonomy was coined to refer to basic taxonomic inquiry that informs disease management tactics. Crop rotation strategies, deployment of host resistance, and biological control are three management strategies that benefit from a translational taxonomy approach. Translational taxonomy often relies on differences in bacterial plant pathogens at taxonomic levels below species or subspecies and may have an additional layer of codified nomenclature. This presentation will describe bacterial taxonomic inquiry to develop a range of disease management strategies for a variety of plant and mushroom bacterial diseases.

Subject: Reminder!! Roundtable discussion with Professor Carolee T. Bull
Hi all,
Dr. Carolee T. Bull (Professor & Department Head, Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology and Director of Penn State Microbiome Center) has offered to talk to our department students and post-docs.
I would encourage you all to register. Dr. Bull had conducted many career guidance workshops at her university. It will be an excellent opportunity for you to meet her and get some tips to enhance your career path.
Check this article online! https://sites.psu.edu/bridge/2016/03/09/recap-of-how-to-be-your-own-best-me…
Recap of "How to be Your Own Best Mentor" workshop with Dr. Carolee Bull
"Dr. Bull cares deeply about helping others, especially students, learn how to live the life that is best for them, and her unique blend of approachability, enthusiasm, and candor make her an excellent leader for a workshop like this one. Her personal mission statement includes the concept of Ubuntu, meaning you do not diminish yourself by lifting others up, and it is obviously something she lives by. I love that idea, by the way. I think I need to incorporate it into my own personal mission statement."
By Kelly Marie Ness
I also attached "How to prepare and ask for a letter of recommendation" by Dr. Carolee Bull published in https://bullpennblog.wordpress.com/
You can find more info and videos of seminars conducted by Dr. Bull at the above link.
I hope you all attend this event!
