Subject: Career opportunity at the NFU--please pass this on to potential applicants.
Caution: This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba.
Dear Rich, Angela, David, and Martin,
The National Farmers Union is hiring a Climate Policy Coordinator and we thought that some of you may know people who might be well-qualified for this position. Please pass this along to anyone you know who might thrive in this work. Note that, optimally, we are looking for candidates with some career experience. This is a full-time position for more than two years. Here are the details:
Climate Policy Coordinator. The NFU is seeking someone with a passion for agricultural and climate issues and government policy development. Our Climate Policy Coordinator will work with farmers and governments to develop and advance programs to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, foster climate adaptation, build resilience, and increase the long-term sustainability of the sector. The successful applicant will assist in policy development, communications and media work, government relations and policy advocacy, and organizing farmers and rural residents. The successful candidate will need a mix of academic qualifications as well as significant work experience. We would be especially interested in applicants that can work, at least part of the time, out of the National Office in Saskatoon.
Please see full text of the job posting and information on how to apply in the attached PDF or by following this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13YFWapUMxYPE0_s_NhL8OtG-U1cwe3Ar/edit?u…
Deadline for applications is June 12.
Thanks,
Darrin
P.S. In addition to this fulltime position, we are also hiring a part-time, shorter-term contract position to do research on wetlands. I note this just to avoid confusion as to whether there are one or two positions. There are two.
Darrin Qualman
Director of Climate Crisis Policy & Action

Hi everyone,
There are cupcakes in the graduate lounge. They were originally for my daughter’s birthday, but because the label says, “MAY contain nuts” (they don’t) her daycare couldn’t serve them.
So you all benefit!

Hi all,
As many of you know, I'm retiring.
My replacement isn't in place yet but Emily.Wolverton(a)umanitoba.ca can help you.
I've really enjoyed working with you and will miss you all.
An important part of the graduate student experience is connecting with fellow grad students. Prior to the pandemic, grad students knew each other and came together for coffee and social activities. Covid isolated people. There's an iniative underway to bring the department as a whole and grad students together again. I encourage you to reach out to your fellow students, to get to know each other, to discuss, debate and have some fun.
I wish you all the very best.

Dear Students,
I am inviting you to sit in on a "grant proposal preparation session" that many members of the Ag faculty are involved in.
Background
Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, along with NSERC (natural sciences) and SSHRC (social sciences) will fund projects in the area of "Sustainable Agriculture" for a 4-year period beginning in Spring, 2024. These are large grants with a minimum of $500,000 per year. The proposals are due Oct 2023. One of the project ideas that we as faculty are working on is "Perennializing Canadian Agriculture for Multifunctionality". We are meeting regularly and engaged in the dynamic process of conceptualizing ideas into a competitive proposal. You are welcome to join us to observe the process and contribute ideas. I have attached a ppt that describes some of our thinking so far.
When: Monday, May 8 - 10 AM to Noon (recurring over the next 3 months, dates TBD)
Where: Room 218 Plant Science (coffee and tea provided!)
Why: To provide graduate students with the opportunity to observe (and contribute to) the creative process involved in conceptualizing and preparing a large, integrated research proposal on sustainable agriculture.
Hope you can make it - even for a portion of the time

The Plant Science greenhouse is looking for a weekend waterer. This position is shared with another Graduate student so there is some flexibility. The two waterers generally work out a schedule that works for them and each work 2 weekends per month, 3 ½ hours /day. Weekend watering includes weekends, holidays and Christmas break. Hoping to be training new candidate on May 20 or 21st. Please talk to Cathy Bay if interested in this position.
