No one is interested to hear about your research? We are willing to listen to you at Plant Science discussion group (PSDG)! As future scientists, studying at public institutions, we are to critically analyze our research in terms of its societal implications. Plant Science discussion group will focus on subjects such as; -role of universities and scientists in society -scientists obligations and responsibilities to general public -environmental, economical and political aspects of agricultural research -and anything that YOU think that needs to be discussed! We are planning to meet bi-weekly on Thursday evenings, over a drink, in a very casual setting. If you cannot make it, you can suggest a different time slot as this is only a tentative arrangement. First meeting will be this Thursday (Jan 22) @ 5pm, and we will meet at Degrees, 3rd floor of university center. Depending on the consensus, we may be discussing the following subject: Science And Society ? Whose Responsibility? ?The idea of ?knowledge for its own sake? does not exonerate scientists from being responsible for what they do; but nor are they to be blamed for what society does with what they discover and invent. LORD SELKIRK ASSOCIATION OF RUPERTSLAND AGRICULTURE SCHOLARSHIP W.O.S. MEREDITH FELLOWSHIP FOR BARLEY RESEARCH SYNGENTA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP The LORD SELKIRK SCHOLARSHIP will provide support to a graduate student "doing research in methods farmers may use to add value to their products before leaving the farm gate". The W.O.S. MEREDITH FELLOWSHIP "is intended to extend research in barley science by encouraging and providing support to a student who is conducting graduate research in this field". The SYNGENTA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP will be awarded to a graduate student who "is conducting research in sustainable agriculture in the following areas: environmental quality and resources management, integrated pest management, introduction of new technologies, economic viability and rural community sustainability". There are 3 pieces of news: 1) Great job everyone on bringing in food for the hamper! For those of you who did not get the chance to sign up for an item, we still need to buy the family gifts. You can donate money and the PSGSA will buy the gifts. You can give your money to Iris, Meghan, Anne, Victoria, Muthu, Teresa or Jessica. Please try to have in your money and food brought in by this Friday. 2) Starting this Thursday December 11, we will be having treats at coffee time for the holiday season! The treats will be free (provided graciously by the social committee)... so come to the grad lounge at 10 am for coffee, or tea, or just to have some yummy treats! ... and if you feel like bringing something so share with everyone, you can do that too. 3) Next week on Thursday December 18th at 2:00 pm in room 218 is the Plant Science Department christmas party, so make sure you come because there will be food, drinks and games. The party will end around 4:00 ... but not for the grad students! We will be going out for drinks afterwards ... probably at Tavern. see you at coffee time!
