Road safety experts worried as Dutch children stop cycling
Monday 24 June 2013
An increasing number of children cannot cycle properly, particularly in the
bigger cities, according to traffic safety body Veilig Verkeer Nederland.
Fewer primary school children are taking cycling proficiency tests and
parents are increasingly taking their children to school by car, VVN says.
According to the AD, transport minister Melanie Schultz wants local
authorities to ensure all primary schools include cycling proficiency tests
in their curriculum.
Schools are ditching the tests because too few children cycle to school.
'They can't cycle or don't have a bike,' a spokesman said.
Cars
Cycling instructor Ronald Wittenberg told the paper the Netherlands has a
'back seat generation'.
'Parents take their children to school by car because they have to go on to
work,' he said. 'All those cars make the situation around schools more
dangerous and so fewer parents send their kids to school by bike.'
Figures from the national statistics office CBS show the number of children
killed in cycling accidents is going up. In 2010 nine children were killed
in a bike accident but last year that had risen to 13.

While many cities have relied primarily on signs and markings to radically
transform their streets, a growing number of bikeways around the country
have been improved and made permanent using higher cost materials, curb
relocation and complex engineering. This session will look at two
facilities that embody long term solutions for city streets. How can cities
effectively move the curb without creating drainage problems? What "green”
infrastructure solutions can be incorporated into these new bikeways? What
are the highest and lowest cost alternatives to these designs?

The tour, organized by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, took the cyclists on a
seven-restaurant tour of downtown.
The massive group could be seen moving from the legislative building to The
Forks and through the Exchange District.
Stops included the Promenade Café, Don Pedros and Cakeology. Participants
were given a tour of the areas they were cycling in and many stopped to
snap photos.
The five-hour event, dubbed A Moveable Feast, was the first of its kind in
the city and cost $30 to participate in.

*27-COUNTRY EUROPEAN CYCLING BENCHMARK REPORT*
According to a June 6th European Cyclists' Federation article, "The
European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) is using the run up to next week's
Velo-city 2013, its international cycling conference in Vienna, to launch a
groundbreaking new benchmarking report which provides a multi-dimensional
view on cycling in all 27 EU countries.
"Remarkably Netherlands and Denmark were inseparable at the top of the
table after assessing daily cycling levels, cycle tourism, advocacy
activity, bicycle sales and cyclists' safety. Countries in the south and
east of Europe showed they have a lot of potential for improvement. ECF
Cycling Barometer Project Manager Chloe Mispelon said 'The main purpose of
launching the ECF Cycling Barometer today is to get people talking about
international comparisons in cycling... The ECF Cycling Barometer is our
way of prompting a debate around five dimensions of cycling we are
prioritizing (modal share, road safety, cycling tourism, volume of the
cycling tourism market, and size of the recognized cycling advocacy
organizations)...The barometer shows that we really need reliable
statistics on cycling in the EU to enable governments and advocates to
assess progress on cycling and to allow collaborative working between
countries to improve cycling for European citizens.'..."

What's in There for Me: Mining National Data for Information on Walking and
Bicycling
Are you "interested but concerned" when it comes to data analysis? Join
APBP for an examination of the large national databases available to us and
how they can be queried to extract data on cycling and walking in our
communities. This webinar will provide a user-friendly, 101-level overview
of the National Household Travel Survey and the American Community
Survey, including a detailed description of the data relevant to bicycle
and pedestrian trips to be found in each data set; how to use the NHTS
Table Designer Tool and the U.S. Census Factfinder website to extract
information and build a profile of your community; and a discussion of the
limitations and caveats of these tools. The session includes a case study
from Portland, Oregon, that shows how these data can be used to build
support for investments in cycling and walking.
Presenters:
- Dr. Robert Schneider, Assistant Professor in the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee Department of Urban Planning
- Roger Geller, Bicycle Coordinator, City of Portand.

Where transportation infrastructure is designed to accommodate or even
encourage nonmotorized transportation, such as through complete streets
policies, it can have a positive effect on public health. This report from
the Federal Department of Transportation in the US presents case studies
from across the country to help illustrate how metropolitan planning
organizations and States are collaborating at the crossroads of public
health and transportation.
