Archibald & Watt Rehabilitation/Mill and Fill, Including Archibald Underpass

Interesting bid opportunity on the City web site for a rehabilitation project on Archibald Street including the Archibald Underpass and a connection to the NPG. http://winnipeg.ca/MatMgt/FolderContents.asp?FOLDER_NAME=999-2015&YEAR=2015 This sure would be a big benefit for people in St. B and those attempting to connect from the NPG. Here is an excerpt from the RFP. D3.4 Pedestrian and Cycling Facilities (a) Extension of the Northeast Pioneer’s pathway south to the Archibald Street Underpass is planned in the near future, thus a preliminary design study is needed to examine the extension of this pathway, and connection to a widened sidewalk under the underpass. (b) Detailed design will be limited to provision of the pathway in the vicinity of the underpass, including ramps, stairs, or other similar structures as may be required to transition the sidewalk from the underpass up to the future location of the proposed pathway extension Mark

London's New Bridge For Pedestrians Solves a Common Problem With Clever Engineering

Bystrup came up with a clever and simple solution: They coiled the necessary elevation gain into a spiral at each end, looping cyclists and walkers around a circular path that hangs from the suspension cables at each tower. It will be interesting to see if this gets implemented, and to think how this could apply to Winnipeg's infrastructure.

CBC: Private member bill would require motorists to give cyclists 1 metre

A Manitoba politician is pushing for a new law that would require motorists to stay at least one metre away from cyclists whenever they pass them. Dave Gaudreau, a NDP government backbencher, is putting forward a private member's bill this week that would require vehicles to obey a one-metre buffer zone around people on bikes. It would change the current Highway Traffic Act, which only requires motorists to keep "a safe distance" when passing cyclists. If it works, repeat as necessary/desired. *Why? *There is something simple and beautiful about a Dutch bicycle. It is embodied with a sense of civilization and freedom. It goes hand-in-hand with a bike-friendly city. In other words, the purpose of the project is to foster a shared understanding of what everyday cycling means, what it looks like and to help simplify the discussion around what “bicycle culture” really is.
