*Transform Bicycling and Walking Outside the Urban Context*
*APBP webinar | Wed, Aug. 20th, 2014 | 2:00-3:00 pm*
Key take-aways:
• Recognize challenges and potential for active transportation in small
and rural communities
• Know which key community partners can help create capacity
• Identify and assess strategies for building active communities
Description:
Smaller and rural communities must overcome inherent challenges to become
more walkable, bicycle-friendly places. This webinar focuses on strategies
these communities can use to develop routine inclusion of active
transportation in new and retrofit projects.
Using examples drawn from Montana and Ontario, presenters explain the
barriers and challenges for active transportation in small communities, and
identify approaches that build on inherent advantages such as compact
geography and traditional street grids. Strategies such as complete streets
and sidewalk policies, joint use agreements, development codes and
subdivision regulations, Safe Routes to School, transportation plans, and
encouragement and evaluation programs help communities build support and
capacity for active transportation.
Presenters:
Joe Gilpin, Principal, Alta Planning + Design
Sue Shikaze, Health Promoter, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR)

Hi,
[Feel free to share this widely.]
CounterPoint 1.0, the first iOS release of Green Action Centre's
award-winning active transportation planning tool is now in the App Store.
We would love to have your help testing it out in the real world. We are
looking for approximately 5-15 volunteers willing to spend 2 hours counting
traffic on a Sunday. Its for a good cause (and way more practical than
Angry Birds!)
*We hope to be counting on the following days:*
- Sunday August 31st
- Sunday September 7th
- Sunday September 14th
*At these locations:*
- Norwood bridge
- Broadway downtown
- Westminster/Mostyn
- Sherbrook/Maryland bridges
- The Main Street Entrance to the Forks
- Assiniboine Cycle Track
To volunteer, first please fill out this availability poll
<http://doodle.com/rn42kwyc3drfcvps> with your first name, date(s) and the
preferred location (in parenthesis). Then, please send me a separate email
with your name and phone number so I can give you a call at some point.
*How Does the App Work? *
Kind of like a clipboard, with a brain and some blinky-lights. Seriously,
using the app itself should be fairly self-explanatory, the counterpoints
will all be set up and I will be giving volunteers a quick call beforehand
to go over any questions. For now if anyone is keen, just go into the app
store on your phone, and search for "counterpoint". Create an account, and
either set one up or find an existing counterpoint near you. Give it a try.
Its free, of course.
*Why do this count?*
The goal of this coordinated count is threefold:
1. To help better understand the user impact of the Ciclovia event.
2. To help assess the need for and current usage of AT infrastructure on
routes nearby.
3. Get feedback/ideas for a planned new "campaign" feature of the app in a
future software update.
Afterwards, for those who are willing, everyone is invited for a nice
informal beer/coffee (my treat) where I'd love to get feedback in person if
you happen to have any. (No feedback is fine too, that means there are less
bugs, and then we can just proceed to drinking beer/coffee..) Hopefully you
will find that using CounterPoint is relaxing, challenging and actually
kind of fun. To learn more about CounterPoint, visit counterpointapp.org
Thanks a lot!
Sincerely
Anders

--> P.S. In case you are wondering "Hey, I don't have an iPhone, but want
to help! What gives? Do you work for Apple or something?!?!!". Let me know
that you are interested anyway. We have an Android version coming soon and
there is a chance it will be available by then.
To all my 'AT Network Friends' ! (sorry if you've received this already - I
guess that makes you a 'super friend'! J)
INVITATION to COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE
You are invited to pop by and check out our Janice Lukes Campaign Office
next Tuesday evening.
Details here also: http://janicelukes.ca/latest-news/
Tuesday, August 12th
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
100 - 2855 Pembina Hwy. Richmond Mall West - look for the sign - yes, just
before the Perimeter in the old LC!
Enjoy ice-cream & refreshments, meet St. Norbert Ward residents - children
are VERY welcome!
No RSVP necessary - lots of free parking and bike parking if the rack
arrives on time!
You may be aware - I've registered as a candidate for the St. Norbert Ward
in the upcoming civic election.
I just couldn't do another election sitting around a table with many of you
- planning how to 'educated' candidates on AT issues !! That and a
combination of other situations have resulted in me realizing - 'never say
never' - and motivating me to take this very bold step outside the normal
comfort zone.
If you have some free time on Tuesday - please pop by our Campaign Office
Open House- check out my website - www.JaniceLukes.ca - and if you have
more free time in the fall - I welcome any volunteer help.
I know I can confidently say this from my past 14 years' experience - when
elected - I know there will be no other elected official that will work
harder than I will - to move forward active, accessible and age friendly
transportation issues. Is this a call for your help in putting me on the
other side of the table at city hall ??
- for sure it is. Ruthless self-promotion seems to be part of democracy -
it is what it is.
Look forward to seeing you -
Janice Lukes

Study to examine future of Arlington overpass102-year-old bridge not
expected to last beyond 2020
By: Aldo Santin
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/study-to-examine-future-of-arlington…
The skyline of the North End could be in for a major change.
An engineering study will examine the replacement of the 102-year-old
Arlington Street Bridge.
Brad Neirinck, the city's bridge-planning and operations engineer, said the
Arlington bridge isn't expected to remain standing beyond 2020 and options
are being considered for its replacement.
"Once we get closer to that date, we'll have to re-evaluate things and see
if we can keep it going any longer than that," Neirinck said.
Options under consideration include:
- Taking down the old bridge and replacing it with a four-lane
structure at the same location.
- Expanding the McPhillips Street underpass as an alternative to the
Arlington bridge.
- A new bridge connecting McGregor and Sherbrook streets.
The Arlington bridge was built in 1912.
A major rehab, including new bridge deck, was carried out in 1992.
Neirinck said the study will include a public-consultation process, which
will help determine the old bridge's fate, what should be built in its
place and in which order.
"The study is mainly to look at traffic flows and is Arlington the best
location for a replacement structure or is there something better?" he said.
The RFP (request for proposal) for the 14-month, $1.5-million study was
opened in June and closed at the beginning of July. The contract is
expected to be awarded soon. Approval for the study was given by city
council in late 2012 for inclusion in the 2013 capital budget. Neirinck
said the study was delayed until this year.
City council also tentatively set aside $2 million in the 2017 capital
budget for preliminary design work. When the study is completed in late
2015, council will be presented with options on how to move forward along
with cost estimates for each.

Give the bicycle path back to cyclists
The city of Amsterdam had put forward this request in late 2013, and was
supported by the three other major cities. Interest groups like the
Cyclists’ Union are in full support. In the words of Hugo van der
Steenhoven, general manager of the Union, “This is a way to return the
cycle track to the cyclists and to reduce their exposure to air pollution.
The cycle track will regain its main purpose: safe, clean space for all
cyclists. We receive frequent reports from elderly persons and parents of
children, saying they no longer dare to cycle”.
