Calgary to plow downtown protected bike lanes through winter

Snow plows moving quickly to clear bike lanes this winter http://www.660news.com/2015/10/27/snow-plows-moving-quickly-to-clear-bike-l… This will be the first winter for Calgary’s cycle track pilot project, and some are wondering what it will mean for snow plowing. Brittany Kustra is with the City of Calgary’s roads department and told 660 NEWS how it will work. “The cycle track is all on priority one roads so they’ll be cleared within 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling. Those marked on-street bike lanes are priority two roads which means they will be cleared within 48 hours after the snow stops falling,” said Kustra. Crews will use a special piece of equipment called a weele to clear the bike lanes themselves. One note, the green posts dividing the downtown cycle track from car traffic will be staying, and that could make it more difficult for the plows to move the snow off the street.

This is a 2012 report, but it is a must-read for anyone concerned with cycling safety and/or promoting cycling in Manitoba. http://www.internationaltransportforum.org/Pub/pdf/12Cycle-Safety.pdf In 19 pages, it provides the underpinnings for policy affecting safety, cycling infrastructure and AT promotion, based on real experience in a broad range of countries. If everybody involved started from the basis of these findings, we would save ourselves a lot of time and effort.

Composition of London riders

An interesting study looking at the makeup of London cyclists and why some people (and ethnicities) don't cycle. As a side note, there are nearly 2000 comments, and they seem to be largely from insulted white males, which makes a change from the usual 'I nearly got hit by a car/rider yesterday', cyclists running red lights etc. that tends to dominate most comments on cycling articles. http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/davehillblog/2015/oct/12/why-are-london-… Ian

I found this interesting to see how GPS data can currently be easily collected, used and translated to the public. Similar to the OTTOCycle project done in the past. http://gizmodo.com/strava-insights-lets-you-see-how-the-world-runs-and-cyc-… Strava tracks runs and rides and has collected an extraordinary amount of data, and sells it to city planners.
