What: *‘Ubering the City’: Understanding the Changes to Transportation in Winnipeg* When: *2-4pm, Thurs, Dec 14th * Where: *409, Tier Building at the University of Manitoba* Hosted by: *U of M Institute for the Humanities* At a time when Winnipeg is considering a new vehicle for hire bylaw, this roundtable discussion will contemplate the new bylaw, and what it means for citizens in Winnipeg. Through discussion and dialogue, this roundtable invites academics, policy makers, advocates, and practitioners to reflect on the bylaws from a variety of perspectives. This event is free and open to the community. All interested students and faculty members are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussions. RSVPs appreciated but not necessary. holiday cheers, Beth * * * * * *The Modes They are a-Changing - Changing Landscape of Transportation and Implications for Bicycling and Walking* *Wed, Dec. 13th, 2017, 2-3pm CST* There is a paradigm shift going on in The Netherlands. New vehicles are fighting for their place on the streets, cycle lanes are overflowing, pedestrians are undervalued. To cope with these pressures, it is important to re-evaluate the importance of place, and the role of specific streets in the wider network. This new approach includes a new way of thinking about traffic safety and the value of place. The shift in rationale from a transport focused to a place focused approach seems to have better outcomes for both transport and place functions of the street.
