PN2008 Winnipeg The Planners Network Conference Planning in Challenging Climates CFP Deadline Extended to May 31, 2008 We have receive numerous requests for an extension to the April 30, 2008 deadline, and have now extended it to May 31, 2008. PLANNERS NETWORK is an association of professionals, activists, academics, and students involved in physical, social, economic, and environmental planning in urban and rural areas, who promote fundamental change in our political and economic systems. WINNIPEG and Manitoba have long histories with struggles for social justice. The city was the site of Canada¹s best known general strike in 1919. It played significant roles in the development of the co-operative movement in the mid-twentieth century. This led to the formation of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) a political party that supported farmers and workers, and called for public health insurance, public housing, and public ownership of major industries. In the early 1960s, with the Canadian Labour Congress, the CCF became the New Democratic Party and Manitoba is currently the only province with an NDP government. There is strong history of community economic development in the city, and it is known for its high rate of volunteerism and its vibrant arts culture. The region is also known for its long winters. Unfortunately this is not the only challenging climate faced by progressive planners and advocates for social and environmental justice. The pervasive neo-liberal climate has undermined social programs; sprawl has created a climate intolerant to active transportation, and competes with the downtown core for amenities; and the growing aboriginal population struggles to overcome a history of oppression. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: PN2008 will bring together an array of planning practitioners, community and economic development professionals, organizers, policy analysts, designers, students and faculty. They will discuss strategies addressing social and environmental justice in challenging climates - including social, political and economic climates. Topics of interest to the conference include, but are not limited to: models for community economic development inner city community development art and the city planning and aboriginal communities neighbourhood revitalization downtown redevelopment housing and homelessness promoting active transportation urban ecology green buildings and sustainable communities social impacts of sprawl heritage planning progressive planning and the media age-friendly communities. A range of session types are encouraged, from conventional panels to participatory workshops and ³how-to² sessions. Please send proposals for individual contributions or full sessions to <PN2008Sessions(a)pnmb.org>. The deadline for proposals is April 30, 2008. Space is limited. Please include the proposed session content, format and a list of potential speakers, panelists or participants. Opinions on bike locker locations

Hello everyone: Winnipeg Transit is going to be installing bike lockers at some transit locations and are asking for input on where they should be placed. Some people have suggested outer terminals, such as St. Vital Mall or Polo Park. Thoughts? Quick turnaround is required - please send your two cents by Tuesday (tomorrow) to Jonathan Borland at jborland(a)winnipeg.ca. May is Physical Activity Month at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba and we are challenging workplaces to get active with our second Workplace Physical Activity Challenge from May 5th to May 23, 2008! Step by Step: Walk for Wellness Challenge (please forward)

Hello Winnipeg Workplaces, Winnipeg in motion is inviting ALL Winnipeg workplaces to register their workplace and take part in the Step by Step: Walk for Wellness Challenge - a new pedometer based program designed to help your workplace add more physical activity and healthy eating to their day! We are encouraging workplaces to start their Challenge on March 31, 2008 and be included in the Winnipeg in motion spring campaign promoting walking for good health. Workplaces that register their Challenge will receive Winnipeg in motion prizes that can be used for incentives for teams to register early, for weekly prize draws, or for any sort of incentive that you wish. At this point we aren't sure how many of each item we can provide - it will depend on how many workplaces register and the amount of participants per workplace. Official release and the Internet March 4, 2008, sees the official release, via the Internet, of the Labour, Education, Language of work, Place of work and commuting to work (including mode of transportation) data from the 2006 Census web module. These data can be accessed through a variety of gateways. Users can enter through The Daily; click on the 'Census' button on the left-hand navigation bar of the Statistics Canada home page (enter through the 'Spotlight' link); or by following the 'Release topics and dates' link under the 2006 Census header. Information within the 'Release topics and dates' web page presents the four topics being released March 4, 2008, and each release-centric page is organized into three broad categories: Data products, Analysis series, and Geography. Please note that the Language of work data and analysis being released on March 4, 2008, are a subset of the 'Language' topic that initially had data and analysis released on December 4, 2007. Users will be brought to the 'Language' release-centric page to access data and analysis for Language of work. Again, Place of work and commuting to work (including mode of transportation) release for March 4, 2008, is a 'data products only' release (i.e. no specific analysis at this time - to follow on April 2, 2008). Content of the release-centric pages The Data products category presents Labour, Education, Language of work, Place of work and commuting to work (including mode of transportation) data for a wide range of standard geographic areas, available through the Highlight tables, the Topic-based tabulations, the Profile release components, the 2006 Community Profiles, or the 2006 Census Tract (CT) Profiles. The 2006 Census Tract (CT) Profiles allow users to search for a census tract by typing in a postal code, using GeoSearch2006 or by typing in a census tract name. Postal codes found outside of census metropolitan areas or tracted census agglomerations will have an option for viewing Community profile data instead. The Labour, Education and Language of work Highlight tables will present counts, percent distributions and other data indicators for census metropolitan areas (CMAs), census agglomerations (CAs) and census subdivisions (CSDs) in support of the analysis. The Place of work/Commuting to work (including mode of transportation) Highlight tables will be released with the analysis of these variables on April 2, 2008. Updates to the 2006 Census Dictionary (March 4, 2008) Please be advised that the 'Attendance at school' definition will be available within the electronic version of the 2006 Census Dictionary on March 4, 2008. Stakeholders/Partners On March 4, 2008, the funding federal departments, Depository Services Program (DSP), Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) and provincial and territorial focal points will have Level 2 access to all applicable Labour, Education, Language of work and Place of work and commuting to work (including mode of transportation) products, except for dissemination area (DA), through the 2006 Census web sub-module (I-Shelf). A reminder that the only census standard products not available via the census web module will be those at the DA level and any other products deemed too large to be served up via the Internet. We refer to these internally as 'Level 3' products. Bike parking bylaw & handbook - Calgary

Hello AT Network: Thought I'd pass along information on new bike parking requirements in Calgary and a bike parking handbook that was prepared in 2002. According to my contact with the City of Calgary, the proposed bylaw from 2002 described in the handbook was never officially adopted but their Transportation department refers to it heavily when making recommendings on new development permit applications and developers have generally been following the recommendations in it. He also noted that Calgary's new "Land Use bylaw incorporates bicycle parking as described in the Bicycle Parking Handbook. Unfortunately there are no easy-to-follow tables of bike parking requirements within the new Bylaw. However, bicycle parking requirements can be looked up for various uses within it." Multicultural executive, global thinker and marketing strategist, Gil Peñalosa is passionate about improving quality of life through the promotion of walking and bicycling. Gil earned an MBA from UCLAs Management School, and after years of private and public sector senior managerial experience, he became Commissioner of Parks, Sport and Recreation for the City of Bogotá (pop. 7m), Colombia, where he led the team redeveloping and building over 200 parks. He was also successful in closing 91 kilometres of the city roads each Sunday, the Ciclovia, where over 1.5 million people come out weekly to walk, run, skate and bike. Jane's Walk in Winnipeg

Jane's Walk comes to Winnipeg! Jane's Walk is a series of free neighbourhood walking tours, offered by interested locals (like you) who share their passion for their neighbourhoods to interested participants. The walks are named after Jane Jacobs, noted urbanist, writer and activist, who had always encouraged people to get to know their city by getting out and walking. This is one way to promote her ideas and legacy around walkable, sustainable, compact and diverse cities. Jane's Walk took place last year in Toronto and New York, and is expanding this year to Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg. The walks will take place on the weekend of May 3 & 4, 2008. If you are interested in being part of Jane's Walk in Winnipeg, join us at the EcoCentre boardroom on Friday, Feb. 15 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. (3rd floor, 303 Portage Ave). SEEKING SUGGESTIONS: Sustainable Transportation at PN2008

Hi all: At the last PN2008 Conference planning meeting we decided that the public event to be held on Thursday, July 17th should focus on sustainable transportation issues. We are currently fundraising and should have a some funding to bring in a speaker or two, but we thought these would be a good forums to solicit suggestions. Any ideas would be appreciated! More information about the conference can be found at: www.pnmb.org We will be posting additional information soon, including the list of mobile workshops (that we hope will mostly rely on AT and public transit).
