CBC: Private member bill would require motorists to give cyclists 1 metre

A Manitoba politician is pushing for a new law that would require motorists to stay at least one metre away from cyclists whenever they pass them. Dave Gaudreau, a NDP government backbencher, is putting forward a private member's bill this week that would require vehicles to obey a one-metre buffer zone around people on bikes. It would change the current Highway Traffic Act, which only requires motorists to keep "a safe distance" when passing cyclists. Always wanted a genuine Dutch bike? Well, now you can! *Plain Bicycle: What is the goal? * To find enough interested people to fill one shipping container with refurbished “plain” Dutch bicycles to bring back to Canada. If it works, repeat as necessary/desired. *Why? *There is something simple and beautiful about a Dutch bicycle. It is embodied with a sense of civilization and freedom. It goes hand-in-hand with a bike-friendly city. In other words, the purpose of the project is to foster a shared understanding of what everyday cycling means, what it looks like and to help simplify the discussion around what “bicycle culture” really is. Giving someone physical space doesn’t mean you’re a prude, it means you understand social consideration. You wouldn’t rest and arm on your buddy’s shoulder while you’re both at the urinal, so why would you crowd a cyclist while passing on a street (hopefully on a straight road with a safe break in traffic). The Tasmanian Department of State Growth raised this question (or variations of it, if we’re being honest), and addressed the issue with a humorous short commercial. http://momentummag.com/distance-makes-difference/
