[JSA/Hillel] Statement from the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg about Israel and Gaza

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Statement from the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg regarding the situation in Israel and Gaza The events of the last few days have raised concerns in our community and worldwide. The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg is releasing the following statement. Federation is committed to keeping our community informed, and will be posting regular updates on our website as events unfold. It is our view that Israel has acted appropriately in order to protect its citizens from the threat of daily rocket attacks launched into southern Israel by Hamas. As the so-called truce between Hamas and Israel ended just 10 days ago, the number of missiles launched averaged over 60 a day. Israel’s quarrel is not with the people of Gaza but rather with Hamas, who continue to refuse to acknowledge the existence of Israel and is committed to its destruction. At this time the Federation is in continuous communication with our national and Israeli partners. We will keep the community informed as developments occur. Our tradition is to light the candles in a part of the house that is most visible to people who are outside of the house. Commentators explain that we do this for the reason of Pirsumei Nissa-we are to share our miracles and joy with other people who are unaware of our traditions and history. This is the ultimate act of Jewish pride, and the most literal way of being a light unto the nations. At National Jewish Campus Life, our mission is to ensure that every Canadian Jewish student has the ability to display their Jewishness in safety and without any hesitation, and to inspire within each and every one of them the pride and desire to do so. As you will read in this newsletter, our campuses are in full swing and we have been in direct communication with professionals and student leaders on the ground, actively listening to their successes, challenges and concerns, and working with them to find proactive solutions. We are working with student and community agencies to continuously educate and arm our students with the tools that they need to be successful and proud advocates for Israel and the Jewish community. And of course, we are finding that our student leaders and professionals are as creative as ever, developing diverse, far reaching and exciting programming.
