Get your tickets before the event is sold out. The Jewish Students Association (JSA) of the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba again welcomes everyone to our annual Interfaith Shabbat program. Shabbat is the weekly Jewish day of rest, beginning at sundown each Friday and lasting until Saturday at dusk. It is a day of reflection, spirituality, enjoyment, and, of course, food. If you've never experienced a Shabbat - then this is your prime opportunity! JSA is opening up the Etz Chayim Synagogue to give the community at large the opportunity to learn about and celebrate this special holiday, as well as to learn about Jewish culture and traditions in general, as we bring in Shabbat February 6. The evening is open to anyone of any religion, culture, or background, including those who are Jewish and would like to be part of this fun event. The evening starts with a tour of the Etz Chayim Synagogue, followed by a beautiful Shabbat service led by JSA students, and then a wonderful and delicious dinner. February 6, 2009 Tour: 4:45PM, Service: 5:20pm, Dinner: 6:00pm Cost: $10.00 per person (full dinner included!) On December 27th, following more than a week of Hamas unceasing rocket and mortar fire attacks on Israel's southern communities, Israel was forced to undertake a major defensive operation to put an end to the attacks from Gaza. This year alone, the men, women and children of southern Israel have endured nearly 3,000 missile strikes launched by Hamas terrorists. Every country has the right and obligation to protect its citizens. Israel is doing no less than Canada would do under similar circumstances. At the same time, Israel continues its efforts to provide humanitarian relief on a daily basis, through border crossings between Gaza and Israel despite Hamas' repeated bombings of those crossings. The international community, including Canada, must continue to signal its solidarity with Israel and those committed to real movement towards peace, while condemning Hamas and its radical allies for forcing the current confrontation. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Statement from the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg regarding the situation in Israel and Gaza The events of the last few days have raised concerns in our community and worldwide. The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg is releasing the following statement. Federation is committed to keeping our community informed, and will be posting regular updates on our website as events unfold. It is our view that Israel has acted appropriately in order to protect its citizens from the threat of daily rocket attacks launched into southern Israel by Hamas. As the so-called truce between Hamas and Israel ended just 10 days ago, the number of missiles launched averaged over 60 a day. Israel’s quarrel is not with the people of Gaza but rather with Hamas, who continue to refuse to acknowledge the existence of Israel and is committed to its destruction. At this time the Federation is in continuous communication with our national and Israeli partners. We will keep the community informed as developments occur. Our tradition is to light the candles in a part of the house that is most visible to people who are outside of the house. Commentators explain that we do this for the reason of Pirsumei Nissa-we are to share our miracles and joy with other people who are unaware of our traditions and history. This is the ultimate act of Jewish pride, and the most literal way of being a light unto the nations. At National Jewish Campus Life, our mission is to ensure that every Canadian Jewish student has the ability to display their Jewishness in safety and without any hesitation, and to inspire within each and every one of them the pride and desire to do so. As you will read in this newsletter, our campuses are in full swing and we have been in direct communication with professionals and student leaders on the ground, actively listening to their successes, challenges and concerns, and working with them to find proactive solutions.
