American Involvement in the Middle East and its Impact on Israel
winnipeg, MB - March 14, 2005 - The Asper Foundation Lecture Series in
association with the Winnipeg Zionist Initiative is pleased to present Prof.
Gil Troy speaking on the topic American Involvement in the Middle East and
its Impact on Israel. The lecture takes place 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April
14, 2005 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 561 Wellington Crescent, and is
being co-sponsored by the Rose and Max Rady Jewish Community Centre, Israel
Experience Centre, Winnipeg and Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Prof. Troy is a Full Professor of History at McGill University, Montreal. He
received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Harvard
University and taught History and Literature at Harvard for two years.
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel says of Prof. Troy, "His quest for
truth remains strong, as does his commitment to truth." He has been hailed
by Maclean's magazine as one of McGill's "Popular Profs" and recently
received the Jerusalem Prize from the Canadian Zionist Federation and the
World Zionist Organization. A regular columnist for the Canadian Jewish News
and B'nai Brith Magazine, Prof. Troy has also commented on American politics
and the presidency on television, radio and in various publications, with
articles published in The Wall Street Journal, The Montreal Gazette, The New
York Times, The New York Post, The Washington Post, The National Post, The
Jerusalem Post and USA Weekend. Having sold nearly 15,000 copies, Troy is
the author of Why I Am a Zionist: Israel, Jewish Identity and the Challenges
of Today, hailed by Martin Peretz, Editor-in-Chief and Chairman, The New
Republic as the "most persuasive presentation of the (Zionist) case...in
decades." Prof. Troy's third book on American history, Morning in America:
How Ronald Reagan Invented the 1980s, has just been published by Princeton
University Press. His previous two works were Mr. and Mrs. President: From
the Trumans to the Clintons, and See How They Ran: The Changing Role of the
Presidential Candidate.
The Winnipeg Zionist Initiative administers The Asper Foundation Lecture
Series. The series features authoritative and respected speakers from around
the world addressing substantive, relevant, national and international
issues. Since its inception, over 14,000 people across Canada have attended
these inspiring and thought-provoking lectures and events. Upcoming speakers
in the series are John Loftus, May 16th and Jeff Jacoby, June 8th, 2005.
Admission is $10 and free to students displaying student ID, Winnipeg
Zionist Initiative members and the media. Proceeds support the Winnipeg
