The April 19 PI meeting summary referred to in the last email was not
included with the previous email but was instead sent to the MNN PI mailing
list. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Dear MNN Members,
Robert Beattie and Gilbert Kirouac have graciously volunteered to serve as
members of a nominations committee for upcoming MNN leadership elections.
There are several positions open, from councilor to President. Please
consider helping us develop a robust leadership team by considering the
following from Robert and Gilbert:
Nomination of councilors: You can self-nominate or nominate one of your
colleagues you would feel is suitable for the positions listed below. If
nominating a colleague, please first confirm that they would be okay with
you putting their name forward. Please forward all nominations, including
name and position, with the subject: Nomination for MNN council to:
robert.beattie(a)umanitoba.ca <mailto:robert.beattie@umanitoba.ca> by May 12,
2023 at 4:30 pm.
Positions available for nomination:
* President
* Vice-President (vice president eventually becomes President after
two-year term).
* Secretary/Treasurer
* Fort Garry Representative
* St. Boniface Representative
* Bannatyne Representative
* University of Winnipeg Representative
* Graduate Student Representatives (1 UM, 1 UW, voted by students)
Voting: Nominations will be collected, and lists of names for each council
position will be distributed to all MNN members for voting. Councilors shall
be elected by a simple plurality of votes by electronic ballots received. We
aim to have the results of the elections before the upcoming MNN Meeting on
June 23.
Attached is also the meeting minutes from the PI round table discussion held
on April 19, 2023.
The next PI meeting will be held during the lunch break of the MNN meeting
on June 23, 2023 at the Leaf. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

2023 Nick Shepel Neuroscience Trainee Travel Award
Application deadline: FRIDAY, MAY 19TH, 2023
Background: The fund was established by the Division of Neurodegenerative
Disorders, St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre, to honor Nick Shepel who
was an outstanding researcher, friend and leader. Nick was a true
inspiration to his laboratory partners and brought fire, humor, and a desire
to always excel. His insistence to always try better has had a permanent
effect on his lab mates and peers. Nick led by example and taught that
detailed preparation and execution of experiments ensured reliable results.
Purpose: The purpose of this fund shall be to recognize a young
investigator(s) (specifically in the neuroscience area) by providing an
annual award(s) to support travel costs associated with the applicant's
attendance at an upcoming national/international conference where the
applicant is presenting a poster or oral presentation. This year, awards are
available with a value of up to $1000.
Eligibility: At the time of application the following conditions are
required:
. Students must be registered as a full-time graduate student in the College
of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.
. The area of research being presented at the conference must relate to the
field of neuroscience.
. A student admitted under the "Provisional Status" may not receive the
award during the provisional period.
. Amount of award(s) may vary each year.
. Students must be giving an "IN-PERSON" poster or oral presentation at an
upcoming scientific meeting (national/international). Virtual attendance
does not qualify for award.
. Students who have received this award previously should not apply.
Submission Instructions: A complete application consists of the following
information *If your application is not complete, it will not be considered:
. Introductory letter describing meeting, location and date
. Copy of abstract
. Curriculum vitae
. Current GPA, transcripts not needed
. Proposed budget of travel costs
. Submit your completed application materials to kjorund(a)sbrc.ca

How to apply for reimbursement: Reimbursement will be done in accordance
with St. Boniface Hospital travel policies. Request for reimbursement must
be done within 2 weeks following travel otherwise eligibility may be voided.
