I have a “.rec” Epidata data set with patients with chronic diseases (Diabetes and Hypertension). I would like to undertake some analysis to determine what is happening on the patients at different periods of follow up. (Month 3, 6, 12........) i.e. Glucose levels, BP, BMI....... Each period I select (M3, M6, M12...) I give an allowance of + &- 10 days. (e.g. for M3=90 days from the day of enrollment, I select between day 80 and day 100). This is because patients did not always respect their appointment dates. In the period selected (between day 80 -100) some patients for several reasons were seen more than once. I would like to select only one visit date in case of moth 3 follow up that is closest to the 90th day from date of enrollment .(e.g. a patient had a visit on the 80th day and 95th day, I want to select the 95th day visit which is closest to day 90)..... How do I do this with Epidata analysis? NB: My variables are “enrolment date” and “visit date” Kwal

100% converting rec to epx

Now it is clear that the converting (aka Import, "Add data structure...") of REC-files into the new epx-format doesn't work 100%tly. Plausibility checks are not importet. This is one of the BUGs I can see. Maybe there get more lost in the conversion. Is there a bug-tracking system where I can add and monitore it? Where can I see the development time table? I really need to update my project to the new format. Of course I need a complete converting routine for it. I won't do any work again that was done before in the old version.

I really need an older version of EpiData to do some tests. How can I get "Epidata version 3.1 - build 22feb2005" ? I've never used it. But I converted old rec-files to epx-format. Now there is now plausibility check or default values while entering data with EntryClient. I am not sure if it causes in the conversion or if it is "normal" because the old rec-files behave the same way. I need to test it.

I have 7 old REC-files. I imported them to the new data format with "add structure". I saw that I can append all sheets together to one big sheet. But I don't want it. Is there a way to create one project (epx-file) with 7 separate sub-sheets in it?

editing qes- and chk-files?

Here is an old EpiData project with seven sheets (rec-files). The doc about the project describe how to add "user-defined variables". Sheet number 7 is prepared for this and the user just have to edit the qes- and maybe the chk-file with an text-editor. It sounds realy old and obsulet. Am I right? Convertet the rec-files to the new epx-format there is no need to edit the file manualy with hand, right? There is the EpiData Manager for this job, right? Can I forget the qes- and chk-files if I have the new epx or are they related to each other?

I'm quite new with EpiData but I'm working on an old project that use a EpiData version from 2005. I need to know what happend to EpiData in the last 7 years. ;) Am I right that in 2005 there where only one EpiData package. But know it is splited into Manager, EntryClient, Analysis? What is the big difference between 2005 and now?

Dear all I cannot open the EpiData rec files from my colleague, the error message "one or more records are corrupted" shows up. My colleague can open the files normally. We are both using EpiData version 3.1. I looked at the files in the notepad, but it seems to me that they look like my own files (which are fine). Can somebody help me? Nicole, How do you exchange the .rec-files? Via a Unix operating system to Windows, e.g. via the internet? It may happen that this modifies the <cr><lf> (carriage return/line feeds) at the end of the lines. One solution would be to send/receive files packed in .zip files, that way the <cr><lf> characters should be kept as they are. Another possibility is using a good text editor (like Ultra Edit) that allows to modify the CR/LFs from Unix text file to Windows text files or vice versa (i.e. to repair them). Jamie, Thank you for your effort. Sometimes I use Stata format as an intermediate as Stata datasets contains all the data dictionary. However, for data management within clinical research (such as checking for duplicates, NAs fields, inconsistencies and so on) doing repetitive procedures manually is not that effective. Import XML EpiData files from R

EpiData friends, One the things that was limiting me to definitely move from 3.1 to new EpiData with new epx and epz format is that I was not able to import epx/epz data form within R. Currently, from a R users list I was awere of this user made function. So now Im will try to let 3.1 go and gradually transform my files to XML based formta. Transpose from wide to long

Hello, I have a parent file where all family members are represented as one observation. Some of these families are relatively large. This makes it impossible to print the information on one page. I did merge the parent file with the child file. The drawback here is that not all family members are present in the child file and we would like to include all family members on the list. To resolve this issue, I would like to create one observation per family member. Is it possible to code this in EpiData Analysis? No, I am working on a stand-alone machine...no networking. So it's standard c drive. And the paths are correctly specified in settings. Yes, one timed backup file exists...from the previous day. Otherwise epz files were created only when I saved. You indicate one can turn on/off timed backups. How? I certainly can't find this option under settings. After 3 days the Entry Manager is still open with the still unsaved project! Could the reason be that you are working on a network server ? Eg drive h or j' check if the drive is available with your file system manager.also if a timed backup file exists. Cannot save my project

I am working with Epidata Entry Client (v1.1.1.1). I created a project using an imported Stata file and for two days have happily been editing and adding data. Of course, each case was saved when moving to another one, and the project was saved at intervals after roughly 10 cases had been worked on. Then, after a working session of some 6-8 hours without saving the project, the program is suddenly refusing to save the project. No errors are reported when saving cases, but I get this message every time I try to save the project: Unable to save project to: [path and file name] Error message: Unable to create file "[path and file name]" The path and file name are both correct. So why am I suddenly encountering this inability to save the project with the same name that it was created with? I can continue to work on the project, but I can't save my work. Of course, Entry Client does not have a "Save as" function, so trying a different name is not an option. Any suggestions?

Example:* paired t-test on variables x1 and x2 gen xdiff=x1-x2means xdiff /t Our Epidata Entry and Analysis manual is developing. The Command reference is the heart of any User Manual. Another manual of (www.tbrieder.org) is also very useful but Command reference section is required. Our list has vast searchable resource (compilation of last 12 years) of “Solutions” for the common problems, the users have encountered. Hence let us work on a standard Reference manual of Epidata Entry and Analysis. Of course, the future challenges are USER manuals of EntryClient and manager also. Actually we were wondering if the fact that by merging them using Epidata Entry and receiving the error message "list index out of bounds (77)", implies that there is an error in the structure of the two original files (in the chk files or whatever) and this will cause us problems in the analysis later on. If this error message is a small bag of the program, we would like just to report it. One problem can be if you work on a linux pc, that the extension of the .rec file and the .chk file should be in lower case. that is not .REC and .CHK Following import of data and or structure you have to reallocate your value labels to the fields. To avoid that you can export from EpiData entry to a stata file and then use that for adding structure or data+structure It would be a good test for us to see if you can import data and labels and then in EntryClient verify that all is imported correctly. As I understand it, during data entry in Epidata 3.1 (on Windows XP), if X characters are entered into an X-character-long text field, EpiData will automatically move to the next field. However, if the text entered is less than X in length, then the TAB or ENTER key must be used to go to the next field. Can I set things up to require the ENTER or TAB key always to be pressed to get to the next field? In other words, I'd like a field to remain in focus, even if the data completely fills it, until TAB or ENTER is pressed. Thanks. --Chris -- Christopher W. Installation problems on mac

Hi, I have been trying to install the new Epidata for Mac. I have an intel cor i7. I have tried to install both versions of manager v1.1 (intel and power pc). Every time I get the massage that at step 4: Could not create directory /Users/dinahsherzadkhatir/Epidata/data. And step 9 says installation has failed. I have tried to use a different directory but I still get the same massage. Ah okay. Well just to let you know. Last year I downloaded and was able to install the trail version on my mac. Of course i could not use that version. Hope the information helps you. Hello, I created two dates (date of birth of mother (datem), and date delivery (dated)). I also created a variable "age". >From "age", in the field calculation, I can calculate the age field in the results because the variable does not appear (below results, "none" is noted). While, if I create another variable "age2, in the calculation, "age" appears in the window (and I write age = dated - datem). So in Entry, age is noted in variable "age" and not in "age2".... It is quite complicated... Why should I create two variables ???? I miss the ease of entry with a EPIDATA ENTRY 3.1 before with the formula (age2=(dated-datem)/365.25..... Thank you. Question re defining a new variable in EpiData Analysis

Hello, I am a relatively new EpiData user and am now using EpiData Analysis. In EpiData Analysis I would like to create a new variable which will be the number of days between two dates which I have collected in my EpiData dataset. I have started with "define" and the name of the new variable and the new variable will be a numeric variable of length 4. i.e: define smeartoreg1 #### However, I am having difficulty with the code for defining the number of days between two existing dates and would appreciate some advice on this. Hello everyone Just to share my experience with you. As you know I had a problem reading my rec file in epidata analysis.We finally solved the problem after my colleague went through all the records (1065) in excel sheet. We found that one numeric field was initially entered in a wrong way, something that epidata entry accepted it when we imported the data from excel into epidata. Hi Hans This also doesn't work. I also exported the file, 1065 records, into excel and when I tried to copy and import it into epidata analysis immediately, the software shut down immediately. It only works with 50 records. Dear all, I just changed from the legacy Epidata to Epidata manager. It took a while to get used to the new philosophy, but I find it more easy to use compared to the legacy version. And I see clearly more development in this aspect. My question is whether you will develop iPad or Android versions of the programme. Initially it should be for the Epidata Client only, since by using tablet computers you could remove the need for purely data-entry staff. Regards from Kabul, Aiso Vos

Good day! I'm totally new to Epidata and would like to ask help on exporting data entered using v1.1. When I explored Epidata Manager, there is an exporting option but only stata. Our requirement is to export to notepad. I've been searching all over for answers but I'm really having a hard time to know how this may be done using v1.1. Thanks in advance. Regards, Paulo

Are there any records in your rec file that are marked for deletion? I had EpiData Analysis stall on me when it tried to read a rec file with a deleted record. I used the 'pack file' function in EpiData to get rid of the records that were marked for deletion. After that it worked fine. I suppose you could also undelete these marked records, but then they will show up in your analysis. Rod

Hi there, I am in the process of merging files in EpiData Analysis. I am looking for syntax that would allow me to keep all the records in the file not just the records that are in common in file1 (individual information) and file2 (visit information). File 2 contains only information of those that are already included in File1. For example, file1 has a 100 records and file2 has 10. One person has 5 visits and 5 others have one record. The merged file ideally includes all records from file1 and file2 (104 records). I have tried several options and failed as there are duplicate ID's. Example: close logclose read "C:\file1.rec" merge id /file="C: \file2.rec" /table savedata "C:\file3.rec " /replace I am looking forward to hear how I can resolve this issue. Thanks, Renate

Comment Legal and Type Comment commands + One bug in EntryClient v1.1

Dear Jens, I want to bring to your kind attention the following matter. Comment Legal and Type Comment commands in the Epidata Entry preserved the 40 charaters lengh (continued from EPI6 DOS era) of Type Comment varible to recive the seleted lables. However with Manager v1.1, EntryClient v1.1, this limitation should be removed. In this era of large LCD monitors, it should be possible to have longer (possibly 100 or more characters) Type Comment varibles to accomodate longer lables such as ICD 10 codes. Is it possible One Bug – in the EntryClient v1.1, when programme settings dialog box is opened and necessary changes made, the EntryClient hangs and programme requires termination with Ctrl-Alt-Del. Hi, I am also experiencing the "out of memory" problem when trying to define value labels. I am using Windows 7 (64), and Manager version 1.0.0.0. It is obviously not a question of memory: I am using a new computer with a lot of memory, and trying a new, very simple, data entry form. Any suggestion for solving the problem? Thanks! Version 1.1 of Manager and EntryClient release

Today we have released new versions of EpiData Manager and EpiData EntryClient. As with the first public release of Manager and EntryClient, this release has been packed in an installer which should work for Mac, Windows and Linux. The changes made are in short: * An issue with saving project files where pathnames/filename contained non-ASCII characters. * Fixed a number of bugs related to importing data. * Fixed a number of bugs related to saving colour settings in EntryClient. The updated versions are available from the download page on http://www.epidata.dk The release is part of the new principle, where a given new version first is placed as a beta version on the testing page and then moved to a public release on the download page if no problems show up. Therefore the v1.1 placed on the download page today is the same as the beta version placed for about a week on the testing page. On the testing page you will then find two versions: a. the next version to be released in general (such as v1.1) b. The current development (alpha) version, which you can consider a temporary "how far is the development currently" - users testing obviously must recognise that changes will occur during development. In all cases do not use the versions on the testing page for production work - only to influence development and test whether future releases have solved the problems identified. Reading and writing in EPIDATA ANALYSIS V 2.2.2.178

22 feb 2012 Hello Jens and Kirsten, Working with this new Epidata Analysis (V 2.2.2.178) I found the following oddities: Reading files: .EPZ files went OK .EPX files were not accepted, the files were made by the latest MANAGER program from an imported normal RECfile. Writing files: An .EPZ file was subsequently saved with SAVEDATA into a .RECfile. This recfile was well accepted and loaded in EpidataAnalysis and also in ANALYSIS from EPI6, and also in ENTERX from EPI6, but the structure of the file was very strange: In each record a lot of space was added at the end of the record. This extra space did not hamper using the file. Also this was not accounted for in the filesize in the file system of my WINDOWS XP (SP 3). have a good day, Louk Meertens.

Good morning to all the list, I'm experiencing a problem with my own epidata questionnaire setup, defined as follows: MENU.qst - Q1.qst ----Q1_1qst - Q2.qst MENU is just a initial menu that allows the user to select the questionnaire they want to enter or edit. Depending on entered number, the user is redirected using a IF…ELSE construct, like this: IF selection = 1 THEN RELATE code q1 1 ENDIF IF selection = 2 THEN RELATE code q2 1 ENDIF In MENU.qst, Q1.qst and Q2.qst there is a key, defined in each case as KEY UNIQUE 1, while Q1_1 is related to Q1 using the same key as Q1, but is defined as KEY 1. When I try to merge together Q1 and Q2 everything goes fine, but when I try to export the data in Excel format the process exits with an error about the newly generated checkfile. In particular, the problem lies in the fact that the key in the new checkfile is defined simply as KEY 1, and not as KEY UNIQUE 1. However, to relate Q1 to Q2 needs the key to be defined as UNIQUE. I don't see any reason why while merging the new checkfile defines the key as not unique, since the codes are still unique also in the merged file. There is any workaroud for this? This is a question about double data entry in EpiData : We commonly use EpiData to do double data entry. We use Tools > Prepare Double Entry Verification and select the field ID for matching records. When we open the *_dbl file for data entry, a box usually opens stating 'double data entry verification mode / data compared with *.rec / compared by Field ID'. What does it mean when that box does not open ? Are we simply entering records into the _dbl file without comparing fields from the *.rec file ? Recently we have experienced the box opening *and* the box NOT opening when selecting the same _dbl file for data entry. How can we know for certain that all records in the _dbl file have been verified - even when the box does not open. Thanks in advance.

First alpha release of Manager and EntryClient

This move has been completed today with the first release of our development branch for Manager and EntryClient. As stated, these releases are experimental versions of the programs and should not be used for "real" data in an everyday production. Hello Torsten & Jens, Thanks for the beta version release in this month.I have some few submission for the new epi data entry software. 1. Currently it is difficult to have the variable name appear on the screen as compared to old version EpiData. where for instance want to design a screen like: Qid Questionnaire ID Q1 Gender of respondent. With this current one, the variable name does not appear only the variable label. Is it possible to include check box in the basic menu to include the variable name, instead of the current form. 2. Is it possible to have a function to make a screen design in a roster format, so that if you are capturing data for household you can design the screen as you see it. eg. Name Age Sex. Household member 1 2 3 4 . . 10. With this function, it will make capturing data in table format easy. Hoping to read from you soon, as we test the beta version V1.1.1. At what seems to be a random point in the interview, the following error pops up and EpiData needs to be shutdown. 'Access violation at address 0044BB8C in module 'Epidata.exe.' Read of address 00000004.' 'access violation at address 7C2F0012. Read of address 7C2F0012.' The data entered hasn't been and can't be saved. Unique key in EpiData Manager for Mac?

How can I do this? If so, it could be because Epidata doesn't support accents such as " õ " in the path to the file (or doesn't support the double back-slah " \\ " ??) Hello, Good year 2012 for Epidata members I have three suggestions about plans to improve Analysis : 1- Command "freq" : by default or with a new /"x", to sort ascending to even negative numbers or "0" number. With /sa ou others, sometimes, results of "freq" are mixed.. 2- Command "lifetable" : P50 (median) is sometimes false for little size of sample. 3- Command "scatter" : like with Epi-Info Dos, "/r", after scatter, was useful for the line of linear regression. Today's date issue

Hello I encountered a strange issue with today's date. The relational database looks like this: 1 parent file (Demographics) and 3 child files (midwife, 48-hour and 2-week) Each file includes today's date and worked well until I opened the file this morning and today's date is stuck on "30/12/2011". I tried to: * include a new today's date and the date is not automatically filled-out * delete today's date -save it - open rec file - close and add today's date to the qes-file - still today's date isn't filled out. If I create a qes file with only today's date included then the rec file does produce the correct today's date (03/01/2012). I asked program staff to enter one record and today's date updated itself to 03/01/2012. I am glad that this happened, however, I am not sure if this is a temporary or a permanent fix. Have you encountered a similar issue? If so, do you know what the problem might be and how I can solve this problem? Thanks, Renate

Hi, When I run the new Epidata manager and Epidata client, it failed with this error message: 'Windows cannot find "javaw". Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.' I am using 32 bit Windows 7 Home premium PC and it works well with old version of Epidata entry and Epidata analysis. Can anyone please help me with the installation? Thank you and happy New Year! Epidata Client Setting Error

I have installed Epidata Manager & client. When I go to Epidata Client --> Edit --> settings, when I click on Paths the epidata client Freeze and cannot do anything. I am going close the program from task manager. I am running Windows 7 professional, 32bit version. I think there is an error in the setup file. I would encourage everyone to install these into a new EpiData folder. Overwriting files, with the Mac version at least, led to some problems with the file I created. First public relase of EpiData Manager and EpiData EntryClient

Dear all Following the development in recent years, choice of a new file format to replace chk+rec, a lot of testing and specification we have today placed the first version 1.0 of the new software on the public download page at Http://www.epidata.dk/download.php I will not make a lengthy statement at this point, since users who followed the development on this list will be rather well informed. Following installation you should have: 1 The software (manager and entryclient) 2 The sample file 3 Tutorials files (introduction pdf files) Notice: Just after January 1st 2012 we will release a new version of EpiData Analysis, which can read the data created with V1 of Manager and v1 EntryClient, so be a little patient on that aspect. The XML structure created by version 1 of the software will be guaranteed readable from now on. Any future change to the xml will be handled by the software. Whereas up to now we have modified the structure several times. The final format allows the XML to conform to export to the standard defined by DDI (Http://ddi-alliance.org). More about this later. EpiData Entry will remain available for download for quite a long time still. Much of the functionality has not yet been implemented in the new tools, so if you need some of these aspects you may well choose to continue to use the old EpiData Entry. We are quite aware of possible problems in relation to installation etc. since the new installation routines will not in reality be tested before you as users start to download and experience. Please do continue to report any problems found or difficulties experienced. There is definetely a need to develop further documentation, training materials etc. , but that will come. Following well deserved days off during the coming weeks more news will follow in the beginning of 2012. Thank you all for the help you offered me... However, i have not managed to get around my problem. It seems that Jens Lauritsen did not understand my real issue and Hans explained that i did not exactly specify the error i received. Here is what exactly happens. Am using Windows 7 Professional (32 bit) and Epidata analysis 2.2.1.171. I read the rec files well, and the commands execute well .... but the problem comes when i open the Editor. After writing my code in the editor and try to run (whether Run selected or Run all), it brings this error "Cannot create file "C:\Users\Edson\AppData\Local\Temp\TMP9C60.Tmp". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process", When i try again, the error still comes but the TMP***.Tmp file keeps changing... However if i keep trying to run (whether Run selected or Run all), it final executes and brings my analysis.. When i tried to check online i came across this post (http://lists.umanitoba.ca/pipermail/epidata-list/2010q4/001618.html) which i highly believe had the same problem.. However in Jens Lauritsen's answer, he advises to correct the path (see the link above) in the edit setup ini file.. Hello Colleagues, I keep getting an error message while executing the command in Epidata analysis. Searching through on Google, i got a thread of such request by another user on this link (http://lists.umanitoba.ca/pipermail/epidata-list/2010q4/001618.html). His problem seem to be the same one i have, but the solution is not clear.... Can someone please help me! I badly need to write my code in the editor and run it latter... I tried to change the directory as suggested by Jens Lauritsen in the ini file but i dont see where to change. I need help, i believe that some of you are using windows 7 too. Hi List I have no clue whats going on. But when i export to stata 11.2 my lables seems go. I have a value called sex, with the lables 1=male, 0=female –9=unknown When I export to stata i can only get either the male label or the female label but not both. jumping variables

Dear List When i ad space, and than ad variables. They tend to jump around when i try to move them. Seems like there is no pattern to the jumping. Im using Program version 0.8.6.1 EpiData Manager on a Mac OSX system. Any tips or fixes? lars

Locking of a dataset in EpiData Entry

Dear Epi-data I have looked through all possible help-files for Epi-Data entry, but have not been able to find an answer. I am therefore writing now. Is it possible to lock the dataset in EpiData Entry, when entry has been finalized and the dataset is final? And will epi-data log any changes made - if possible with eg a password - if any are made after the data is locked? Thank you in advance for your help. Dear ALL I have a relational (Epidata entry) data base which I have data for over one year follow up of patients. I would like to analyse in Epidata analysis and check the Blood pressure, blood sugar readings......at every six months follow up for each patient since they were enrolled. How do I get to select six month, twelve month....visits for each patient form their date of enrollment. ( in my database I have var: entrydate at registration and visitdate on each visit) Thank you Walter
