A federal election is well underway, and election day is in a little under a month. There is no more critical time for us to mobilize as a community and support candidates from every party who share our values. [JSA/Hillel] Seeking a new Driector of Jewish Campus Life

Over the last 3 years the JSA/Hillel Executive has planned the most amazing programs and opportunities to connect Jewishly on campus. Jews, Brews and Canoes - 3 day leadership retreat at B'Nai Brith Camp, the Jews, Brews and Cruise kick off event on the Paddlewheel last year in addition to these sold out events: keynote speaker Ishmael Beah and the Punch Lines for Peace are programs that are still been talked about both on campus and through out our Jewish community. Beyond the countless Shabbats and the ever successful annual Interfaith Shabbat program, that seems to grow exponentially every year, JSA/Hillel in just 3 short years has created a visible space on campus for all Jewish students to connect with. These past 3 years have been an incredible journey for me. I have had the great pleasure to be introduced and work with, in my opinion not only great leaders and students on campus, but the leaders of tomorrow. As I take on the new position of Director of Leadership with the Jewish Federation, I want to extend a thank you to JSA/Hillel, the past and present Executive as well as the membership at large for all of your support and your vision to always seem to make the impossible a reality. Qualifications: A track record of professional success in a related field, training and/or experience in organizational and financial management, and community development are highly desirable. The ability to communicate effectively with students, professionals and lay leadership is essential. An advanced degree, and prior professional experience is preferred. A car is essential. [JSA/Hillel] Information on Flotilla/Gaza

As you may know, Israel is currently under fire for actions related to the Flotilla that was recently prevented from reaching the Gaza. There is a lot of information and misinformation on the subject available, so I am sending a few resources to help educate you or inform you. The information comes from the Canadian Federation of Jewish Students as well as the Canada-Israel Committee (5 key talking points and links to videos and other resources). -Ashley *Overview* The ships carried several hundred activists and supplies for Gaza, and had refused Israeli offers to offload supplies at Ashkelon for transfer to Gaza following appropriate security clearance. One ship, sponsored by a terrorist Turkish organization known as IHH, was the site of violence when Israeli soldiers were attacked as they boarded the ship. The IHH has a long history of cooperation with Islamic terrorists. As a result of this violence, it is being reported that some 10 activists were killed and 2 IDF soldiers were wounded. The Government of Canada has expressed concern about the loss of life, and is waiting for more information to emerge before commenting further. We appreciate the prudence shown by the Government and by the opposition parties in this regard. It is our belief that as this story emerges, it will become clear that far from a neutral humanitarian relief effort, the Gaza flotilla represents a conscious and deliberate attempt to manipulate public opinion by placing naive civilians in harm's way in callous disregard for their safety. Responsibility for the tragic loss of life rests squarely with those who organized the flotilla and provoked this confrontation. 1. *The Canadian Federation of Jewish Students* information can be found on their studentsforisrael website by clicking the following link: http://www.studentsforisrael.ca/search/node/Flotilla. Please note that if you use this source you will have to log in, if you do not have an account please sign up for one, as the site is a great way to communicate with other students across Canada, find resources, and hear about conferences and opportunities. 2. *Canada-Israel Committee (CIC) - 5 key talking points* Key Points for Consideration Re: Gaza Flotilla Israeli sailors, attempting to board one of the six ships of the protest flotilla en route to Gaza, were attacked by dozens of activists armed with knives, metal bars, and handguns. Fearing for their lives, the Israeli soldiers had no choice but to respond. At least four Israeli personnel were wounded by various means, including by gunfire from activists. Israel made every effort to provide the flotilla organizers with an opportunity to avoid a confrontation. Israel offered to bring the flotilla into the port of Ashdod, and to transfer their aid to Gaza following appropriate security checks. The organizers rejected this offer, stating clearly that "this mission is not about delivering humanitarian supplies, it's about breaking Israel's siege." (Greta Berlin, AFP, 27 May 10). Israel gave repeated warning of the maritime blockade in effect off the coast of Gaza and that the flotilla would be turned away and brought to an Israeli port to offload their cargo. The organizers of the protest deliberately invited a confrontation with Israeli sailors. This was not an aid mission, but a PR stunt designed to undermine Israel and bolster Hamas, internationally recognized as a terrorist organization. Among the protestors were a group of highly-trained extremists with links to the Muslim Brotherhood and jihadist groups in Afghanistan. There is no blockade on humanitarian aid to Gaza. In fact, Israel delivers 15,000 tons of humanitarian aid - including medical supplies, food, and water - to Gaza every week. The blockade exists to prevent unauthorized individuals and unknown cargo from entering Gaza and falling into the hands of its ruling Hamas regime. Hamas is presently smuggling in massive amounts of military supplies into Gaza to fortify its positions and continue its attacks. Under international law Israel has the right to intercept vehicles that are "believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture." (Section 67A of the San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea). Community Yom Ha’atzma’ut Celebration Israel Week -> March 8-12: As some of you may have noticed, publicity has spread regarding a week-long event being organized at the U of M. The week, dubbed “Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW)”, is a week of speakers and discussions on topics relating to Israel and Apartheid (www.apartheidweek.org). This is an international effort, and similar events are occurring throughout university campuses all over the world. To clarify, JSA is not involved or supporting this week, as the JSA executive has determined that we feel the State of Israel is actually not an example of an Apartheid state. For those interested, you can read more about the points favouring our opinion in this well-written article (http://www.j-peg.ca/blog_post.aspx?id=859) or in this detailed package (http://www.jcpa.org/text/apartheid.pdf) from the Jerusalem Centre for Public Affairs. However, we feel that it is important that Jewish students are aware of events regarding Israel occurring at the university, since many Jewish people feel a strong connection to Israel, as the Jewish state – and, if not, then many other people assume that connection for them. So, though supporters of IAW are entitled to their opinions, and open dialogue is crucial, we certainly would like to be able to voice other opinions also. We are having an impromptu meeting tomorrow afternoon to discuss the JSA response to IAW. It will be: Friday, February 26, 2010 3:00 PM University Centre Room 543-44 University of Manitoba We need YOU to come out! If you can’t make, we hope to see you out on March 10 & 11 (see below) As it turns out, JSA’s “Israel Week” (a.k.a. “iFest”) will also be the same week, the week of Monday, March 8 through Friday, March 12, 2010. Here is the run-down of what’s planned for the week: Monday March 8: Dr. Mohammed Wattad will speak at the U of M from 11:30 AM to 12:20 PM in room 200 Fletcher Argue. This event, titled “You Can’t Play With the Truth” is co-hosted by the Department of Anthropology along with JSA, and all are welcome. Dr. Wattad is a lecturer at Zefat Law School, and holds a Masters in Law from the Faculty of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (LL.M, 2004), another Masters in Law and a Doctorate in Law (JSD) from Columbia University (2007). He also served as a Legal Clerk at the Supreme Court of Israel, under the supervision of Justice Dalia Dorner (2003-2004). In addition to his academic experience, Dr. Wattad speaks regularly regarding Israel’s place in the world, the peace process, international law, and internal relations between Israel’s Jewish and Arab citizens. Tuesday, March 9: Hookah night @ Noir (a restaurant that actually serves Hookah, corner of River and Osborne) Wednesday, March 10: “Shuk” at the U of W Thursday, March 11: “Shuk” at the U of M The “shuk” at both campuses will be a display in a high-traffic area, with Israeli products, gimmicks, and information. A banner of an Israel scene has already been painted by students and will be on display. This will likely be our most noticeable response to IAW. However, the tables will be focused primarily on Israeli culture, way-of-life, technological advances, etc. - and not on political issues. While the “shuk” is at both universities, we need lots of volunteers to help man the table/area. Remember, the tables are “cultural” so you don’t need to feel deeply knowledgeable about the conflict to be there, and if someone asks a question about Israeli policies that you are unsure how to answer, you can respond that this display is about cultural/non-political aspects of Israel. If you’re available at any point on those days, please contact Samantha Loxton, or Eyal Kraut (U of M) or Ashley Faintuch (U of W). If you can’t stay at the table, we hope to at least see you come by! Punchlines for Peace: This is a comedy night featuring four comedians from the Israeli-Palestinian Comedy tour (http://www.ipcomedytour.com). Organized as a joint initiative between the Jewish Students Association and Muslim students at the University of Manitoba, it will be a night to remember - full of laughs and a good time! Founded in 2006, in Chicago, the Israeli-Palestinian Comedy Tour (IP Comedy Tour) has toured through out the United States, Israel, Palestine and Canada to sold out crowds. Their style of comedy strives to bring the two discordant sides together under the pretense that they will be able to co-exist peacefully if they can first laugh at themselves and at each other. The IP comedy tour is traditionally composed of three Jews and one Palestinian. All four members are American. Two of the Jewish members, Aaron Freeman and Yisrael Campbell (not performing on March 4th), are converts to Judaism. Another member of the troupe is Charley Warady whose professional accomplishments include performing on Comedy Central, immigrated to Israel about ten years ago. Punchlines for Peace Our upcoming comedy night, bringing in the Israeli-Palestinian Comedy Tour to the West-End Cultural Centre, is being co-organized by JSA and Muslim students at the U of M. (*see attached poster* - feel free to spread widely) On February 12, we promoted the event with a hummus taste testing contest. Passersby in University Centre tested two mystery types of hummus – one made by our very own Robin Super, the other by Talia Joundi, a Muslim student on campus – and decided which one they liked better. We then told the tasters which was which, and tallied the results throughout the day. In the end, the Arab hummus won out – but actually we both won, since we all got to eat a ton of hummus and pita, plus we sold a whole bunch of tickets to our event. Our annual explanatory Interfaith Shabbat, welcome to anyone and everyone, is tonight, at the Etz Chayim Synagogue, 123 Matheson Avenue East. The Kabbalat Shabbat service starts promptly at 5:10 PM, followed by a synagogue tour, a Shabbat dinner, and guest Zane Zalis. We are looking forward to a packed synagogue tonight! 2.
