Manager/ EntryClient: values of result field after Validate Duplicate Files

Dear users, I am just about to get familiar with EpiData Manager and have a question regarding the variable Double Entry Verification Status that is optionally added after performing Duplicate Files Validation. First of all: Thank you to the developers what a great option to add this result field. As it has already been described before, The values for the created variable are: 0 = Validated 1 = Record does not exist in duplicate file 2 = Failed due to different text 3 = Failed due to different values 4 = Duplicate key exists If have performed some fake validation and all errors have been detected correctly. However: The erroneous record had only the value 0 in the result field. I would have expected it to be 3 since it contained errors in some of the numeric fields. Did I understand something wrong with that or did I make any mistake by using this option? Why did all my records have the value 0 even if some of them failed validation? Field tab order

Dear list, I have used Epidata Manager to set up a data entry screen which contains a number of numerical variables. As I copied blocks of the fields, the end result is that the order of the fields (tab order) is not what I am expecting. Is there a way to modify the "tab" order of the fields?. Your assistance will be very helpful as it is about a large number of fields. Cannot save project

Actually, I cannot do anything to the project. Whenever i do, i get the eror "Unable to create fle C:\Users\....\AppData\Local|....\epidatamanager.cfg" Any ideas? I have to take this into the field tomorrow.... I am working on W8 64 bit on a Panasonic CF-AX2 Thanks Pete

Hello all. I have a small constraint in my chk file and I wonder how I could program it. I have 8 options (8 variables V1 - V8). Interviewers are asked to chose their top 3 options. So that the legal values are 1, 2, 3 and there must not be the same value twice. I dont know how to write short instructions to check that. Thanks for your advices. Serge. -- *M. I use EpiData3.1 because I have used to the qes/chk/rec model. Now I encountered a strange problem as follow:My problem: In my project there are a series of y/n variables (0: no 1: yes 9:unkown) with default value 0. When I enter default 0 for about 40 times the EpiData goes funny.all qes,chk,rec files are in the attached. The error message after entering 40 of 0 for y/n variable:Access violation at address 00002020. Read of address 00002020. Hi, I've tried to locate the answer to my question on your web pages, but since I couldn't find it, I hope you don't mind answering a quick question: Does the new epidata manager have a limit of 999 entry lines in the same way as the old qes-file? Or is there some way of extendig the number of entry lines in a qes-file? Thank you!

I use EpiData3.01 because I have used to the qes/chk/rec model. Thank you, Katie, for the suggestion! I think missing data was the issue with the Stata format. We found a way to successfully import data into SPSS. Export the data file from EpiData Manager as a .csv file (I used the Linux setting). Using Excel, I opened a blank spreadsheet and imported the .csv file via the "add from text" option under "data". I specified that it is delimited by commas, and then changed each column from "general" format to "text" format. This was tedious but necessary because Excel automatically deletes any leading 0s upon import. If you are using these notes as instructions, DO NOT CLICK IN ANY CELL. It will revert to general format, and delete leading 0s. I saved the file as a .txt file (using MS-DOS format). Then I opened in Microsoft Word. I deleted the variable names. I then used find and replace to find "^t" and replace with "^p". SPSS doesn't like tabs, so I needed to replace all tabs with paragraphs. You can use the syntax EpiData Manager produces when exporting to SPSS, I think. Or write your own. I wrote my own, because, as noted earlier in this thread, I had variables embedded within the lines. Worked like a charm! -Natalie

Field Length Issue

Hello, I am currently working to try to import data into SPSS. I created the .dat file with StatTransfer from the Stata-formatted file. Looking at the .sps file, it appears that one of my variables which should be 70 characters (and is specified as such in the EpiData Manager) contains only 1 character. I noticed this issue while rewriting the syntax to pull the data into SPSS. Our variables are embedded within the string variables (e.g., EPIVAR = 56 -> VAR1 = 5 VAR2 = 6). We used spaces as missing data. Could it be an issue with missing data? It shouldn't be, if the field is specified as 70 characters! How can this be? It is making me very anxious.

Using: Test version EpiData Manager: v1.5.0.10 3 NOENTER fields: id1, length 5, integer id2, length 5, integer id3, length 5, string 1 MUSTENTER field serno, length 4, integer In the field serno I type in SCRIPT, AFTER ENTRY: id1 := serno; DEFINE id2Temp: integer; id2Temp := serno+1000; id2 := id2Temp; id3 := string(serno); Result in EpiData Entry Client: id1: correctly done id2: correctly done id3: nothing done (except a "." written into the field) I cannot get strings working, neither from string to string nor (as above) trying to transform an integer to a string. I tried different ways, nothing worked. Consulting the Wiki was not revelatory. Dates constructed from date components (with 1 or more components set to missing, and then making approximations) also work impeccably. Can I "tell" RELATE how many children records to create for a specific household

I have a household survey that asks the head of the household several general questions and then also interviews all women of reproductive age within that household. The number of eligible women can thus range from 0 to several. Is there a way in Epi Data to essentially tell the program that there will be 2 women's records for household A and 3 womens records in household B, and so on. I remember in Epi Info (dos) we could specify the number of "children" records in the KEY UNIQUE field (if I put a "2" on that line then after 2 "childrens' records were created then Epi would bounce back to the main rec file. Excuses, I managed to send the former mail too early: The EntryClient should be version: Program Version: 1.5.0.10 r292 But there are as well versions for Linux, Mac and Windows. Please experiment with these new principles and report. The release of the experimental script version and the former announced public version release: 1.4.2 also indicates a break in development from now until beginning of September 2013. But please keep discussing and asking questions on this list as they will be collected and handled - if serious also fixed before September. Dear Jean-Marie. We have deliberately chosen to make the programs behave the way it does, concerning the mouse. The reason behind this, is that in most scenarios a user creates a database, based on a questionnaire. This questionnaire has a well defined flow (usually top-left to bottom-right), perhaps with some diversion, eg. skipping some fields if it makes no sense to enter based on previous values. This flow is the same we wish to keep in Manager and EntryClient. And if a user the have to use the mouse, this is typically because an error has been made. Hence the use needs to exit the current field, without any validation is done and script is run. This was actually a flaw in the old EpiData Entry program, where the flow was not well defined. Experimental Manager and Entry Client version with before/after entry scripts available

Whereas the former mail concerned the public production version, this mail is an exciting additional feature to be tested by users. Assume you have a special situation where you need to do a particular calculation to show the entry person, e.g. calculation of BMI or the summation of 10 items for an index. With the experimental version now available from: http://www.epidata.dk/testing.php You can create such scripts. Attached is an example file using integers. Example script is: if V1 = 4 then goto V3 missing else if V1 = 3 then goto V3 clear; Another example: V4 := V1 + V2 + V3 ; V5 := V1*V2*V3; Notice that the way the syntax is written resembles pascal, which is a deliberate choice. We have tried a few other variants, including R, but too many problems were created at the implementation. The syntax is intended to be implemented in exactly the same way later in Analysis, once this software has also been rewritten. Quite many functions are already implemented. These are explained on the wiki page: Users are encouraged to work over the next months challenging the scripting engine. And discuss on this list if the new scripting engine is too experimental or of actual use. To write a script: 1 add a field in Manager version : Program Version: 1.5.0.10 r684 2 hightligh that field and hit Enter button 3 on the tab pages of the properties of the field you will see a tab page next to "notes" saying script. this is where you write your scripts. 4 then save the file and open in EntryClient which MUST be the experimental version as well: EpiData Entry Client Program Version: 1.5.0.10 r292 Core version: 1.5 r767 FPC Version: 2.6.2 Platform: x86_64-Linux

EpiData Manager and EntryClient updated to v1.4.2

The following has been updated: New functionality in Manager: Expand current Dataform, - shown on the toolbar with two triangles pointing downwards. This will add blank space at the bottom of the dataform- A tecx indicator is shown. When you save the file the indicator is NOT saved. EntryClient and Manager: * Added commandline options -i, -r, -h and -v * Added commandline options -i, -r, -h and -v Which allows to specify inifile, recentfile, help and version. One use of this would be to use separate recentfiles for experimental and runtime latest public version. A bug in Manager in relation to copy structure for double entry and another in relation to copy/paste has been fixed. Users should be aware that on export to SPSS, SAS etc there can be difficulties in creating systemfiles in these softwares, since EpiData Manager and EntryClient now base all text on the UTF-8 principles. Later some recipies will be added on "how-to" manage this. mac os x data double entry issue

Hi, I plan to use Epidata for a clinical study. A problem / bug came up when I tried to do double entry of data. To prepare double entry, Epidata saves a copy of the project. But it is for me not possible to save this file. I get an error message "Error saving file! - this file filename.double.epx could not be saved" I have tried to rename the file and change destination, but still not working. Anybody else with this problem? We have found a bug in the most recent public release version of EpiData Manager 1.4.1.0. With the bug import of epx and other files into a project with "renaming" of value label sets gives an error. This will be fixed and a new version uploaded within short time. (days) This is only relevant for the situation where you add files depending on naming of value label sets. Bug fix release Manager and EntryClient version 1.4.1.0

Version 1.4.1 of Manager og EntryClient has been uploaded for generel production usage from http://www.epidata.dk Changes are as follows: EntryClient: When F9 or "show value labels" is active the first value label is selected as the default. Manager: Validate duplicate issues with creation of verification file and selection of fields for comparison has been fixed. Default name of value label sets is now valuelabel_<fieldname> Reports and file lists now indicate cycle number (automatic version coding) Minor other text adaptations Export to DDI format now validates correctly against DDI-3.1 as can be verified on: http://snd.gu.se/sv/ddi/validator Just paste the created XML into the field "DDI xml" and hit "validate" All other aspects of function are the same as in the first 1.4.0 release last week. The public version 1.4 of EpiData Manager and EntryClient, plus the minor adaptive release of EpiData Analysis were released on May 24. As noted in a previous mail there are some issues in relation to validate duplicate, DDI export and a few other issues. Since the number of public releases should be kept low I have decided to wait a few more days before uploading an updated bug-fix version of Manager and EntryClient. I am aware of some details reported in relation to Analysis and lifetable analysis. These will be taken care of soon. If you have found any issue not mentioned on this list, then please discuss as soon as possible, such that we can fix these issues - if needed. Meanwhile I can disclose, that the next expermental version for testing will contain a scripting facility, such that scripts can be run before and/or after entry in a given field. This will replace the current "calculate" tab in properties for fields. Examplescripts are: if V1 = 1 then goto V2 else if V1 = 2 then goto V3; V4 = V1 + V2 + V3 ; V5 = V1*V2*V3; regards Jens Lauritsen EpiData Association

Hello, I am having an issue with double entry verification. I am using v1.4 on a 64 bit Windows 7 PC. I am able to create a double file, but I am missing any options like the manual indicates: *"*Options can be changed now: choose if textfields are to be ignore during double entry (only data in numeric fields will be compared with original data). Choose if records are to be compare by recordnumber or by a keyfield. If the option "Match records by field" is unchecked, then records are compared by recordnumber. If the option is checked, the user will be asked to point out which data field should act as the keyfield. The keyfield must contain unique data, i.e. a ID-number. Click OK and read the message stating that double entry varification is now prepared." It simply only creates the double data file. I am also not able to get into any sort of double entry mode in the epidata entry program. Is this a bug or am I not using it correctly? Dear Seng Aung, -You can directly export to SPSS. But the dataset gets saved as SYNTAX file with an extension of " .sps" - Then open this syntax file in SPSS (using open-syntax in menu bar) , you will get a list commands/syntax. Read the instructions at the top of that page. You have to go to the last command/syntax SAVE and remove the * mark to execute the SAVE command. After removing the * mark, just click the RUN in the menubar (RUN all) and your SPSS dataset (.sav file) is ready with labels and label values. -I checked with the EpiData manager and it is working. Dear Larsen, - Yes, I can't find 'export to SPSS' option in EpiData Manager version 1.1.2 - You can do it by installing new test versions 1.3.2 (My previous comment on export to SPSS was based on this version) and the latest test release version 1.3.2.1 (released on 14th May). - In the tools menu or Export process tool bar, the default option is export to stata. There is a drop down box in the right top and you can select CSV or SPSS or SAS. I tested with SPSS export and it is working. (Remove the * mark before last SAVE command before running the syntax file in SPSS) - For latest versions, in the epidata website, goto downloads page----test versions---EpiData manager - Test versions may have issues with other functions (test version!!!)...Have a back up of your data Regards, Dr. C. Types of table in Epidata analysis & normal distribute

I see that there are 3 types of table in Epidata analysis: standard, compact, first x all; however, I have not yet distinguished among them: How/when use them, especially compact type. Error Epidata Analysis

Hi everybody, I would like to format an xls file into .rec file. I save my xls file into csv file to open the latter in Epidata Analysis. It did not want to open my file. I found that there is some pb with string variables. I thought to fix all problems but now Windows close Epidata Analysis when I'm trying to open my .csv file. Can anybody help me? My problem: In my project there are a series of y/n variables (0: no 1: yes 9:unkown) with default value 0. When I enter default 0 for about 40 times the EpiData goes funny. all qes,chk,rec files are in the attached. The current production version on main download page needs replacement as soon as possible. Since last test release in mid March the following has been fixed: EntryClient: * Question og Headings sometimes disappeared during entry. Manager: * Fixed bug in "Count By ID" (bug was: list index out of bounds) * Added checks to drag/drop (design mover) such that controls cannot be dragged outside of valid area. Including pasting and alignment with fixed distance. - on non-linux this should display a No-drop mouse cursor. Hi, I'm changing my database from SPSS to EpiData. IIt's a follow-up database, with almost 1050 subjects, and three different time points (baseline, 1fst and 3rd months). In total, I have 703 variables. I wonder if you can help me with which choice should I take to collect and merge this kind of data? Is it better to create only one database (including all time points), or should I have to create three databases - one for each time point? If I create 3 databases, how can I merge it? Ex: case n. 999 - merge baseline data with 1fst month, and with the 3rd month... Can you inform where I can find exemples? Thanks in advance. Carlos

Problems with Epidata entry and Maneger

Jens, After a long period I could finally make a complete test form in epidata 1.3.1.1. The way I want to work is open data entry, type in some data while in consultation with the patient, after entry copy to clipboard, paste into medical chart, edit medical chart and print the filled form. Like this, it is pretty obvious that somethings in data entry may not be appropriate to be in the madical chart and some things that should be in the medical chart will not be necessarily in the form, for istance the patient initials, and additional medical information respectively. Few things came by. Several times while open data entry and data manager the form Headings, which identify the form, disapeared and appeared again. Currently only part of the headings are being shown during entry and at printed version. I have a three page form, and I would like to have the key fields: for instance patient number and patient initials at the top of each page. However the key field can not be replicated. I had to make diferent field and to clone the questions, but in fact they have to be different variables, is it possible to make the key fields to appear at the top of each page?. During entry, sometimes the pick box does not appear even if the show pick box is ticked at the variable settings, very rarely though. Sometimes the section headings do not appear in the printed version of the form with data . Even after saving the work and closing the file, later when closing the data manager, a warning comes by about leaving and not saving the last modifications. Occasionally, when opening a file data manager comes with a warning about a backup file more recent the the original file itself, even if the original file is older then the bak file. When I copy to clipboard the content of a complete record and later paste at a .txt file the last six fields come in the top and then the correct order of the fields start. I suppose if I send you the file you will be able to test once more and try to reproduce these stuff, what is the most appropriate way to send the file? Regards, Dr. Pedro Emmanuel A. Hello Epidata Forum, I have been working with Epidata 3.1 database for more than a year with no issues, but received the following error message since yesterday. I can't close the program due to this error. I can close error message pop up window but again and again comes when I try to close the epidata. Dear all A major revision update for Manager and EntryClient has been placed for testing on page: http://www.epidata.dk/testing.php A major re-arrangement of menus has taken place to get as close to mimic EpiData Entry 3.1 has been made. The version contains many new additions in particular in comparison with current public release. The hope/expectation is that following bug-removal we can rather soon release this for general public use. Unless the user has added the value from a value selection (F9/+) If someone can reproduce the errors in a way which can indicate a sequence leading to the error this would be very welcomed. Dear all, I hope someone can help me to track down an error. EpiData Entry Client v1.3.0.6 offers to print a Data sheet with data. I am trying to use this function for some corrections to sheets, but I can only print a minority of data sets. Most of the time an error message "Invalid variant type cast" appears, asking for OK to ignore or Cancel to kill the program. I assume there is something wrong with the data, but from eyeballing I cannot see differences between the datasets where printing works and where not Is there a way to find out what is going wrong? Hello, I have been using very successfully and happily using EpiData for a number of studies. I use the relate function often. I usually have 4 to 5 forms per participant and like to keep personal information separate from the rest of the data, etc. Recently, I had a med student decide to use EpiData, but he did his set up in the new manager and client software. The issue we now have is how to relate the four .epx files he created. Is this possible? If so, how is it done? Regina Harders

Yo EpiData firends, Exploring the new 1.3.0.6 client version, I noticed in the settings an option called "Allow multiple program instances" I looked for it at epidata web documentation but I was not able to find. At first I tought it was an option to allow multiple typers in the same dataset. If this is the case, when the second typer closes the client, a warning comes asking to overwrite the data typed by the first typer. Thus, it seems not to accomplish this purpose yet. However, this option is also available in the manager, so I believe this was not the purpose. If it is an option to allow to open two or more client windows but not necessarily to type in the same dataset, it works fine. Is there a plan to allow multiple typers to type simultaneously in the same dataset? I was curious about this issue because the old EpiInfo v6.04 was able to so, and at the documentation of the latest version of EpiInfo, says that the EpiInfo is able to do so. Other data entry software seems to be able to do so too, such as CSPro and OpenClinica. I have 3 questions about comparison of fields in Epidata Manager v. 1.1.2. 1) I would like to type the ID-number for the person (from 001 to 600) both in the beginning (Var1 – Integer field with length 3) and in the end (Var20 – Integer field with length 3) of my data collection file to be sure, that I am looking at the same person through the collection. Under Extended – Comparison I cannot find “Value must be = than”. How can I do this? 2) I would like to compare a record number for all persons asked for inclusion (Var1 – Auto Increment field) with the ID-number for included persons (Var6 – Integer field with length 3), but I cannot find Var1 under Extended – Comparison. How can I do this? 3) I would like to check, that the registration number (ddmmyyxxxx) of a person not is used in any other record. Here: dchild (this would be the same as where you in the old software would put the "AFTER ENTRY ....END" block d You then specify the calculation under properties for that field. d1 Specify result as "age" field and base the calculation on: dchild - dbirth d2 Specify "return value" as "years" Since we are not using time fields for age here, just omit specification of these. Epidata Manager / Calculate

Hello, I have two questions and I want to understand the design "EpiData Manager". - I have three variables: "Date of birth mother" (date) "Date of delivery" (date) "Age (the mother in childbirth)" (numeric). In the "Edit/Calculate" of "Age" variable, I do not find the variable "Age". But I find the calculation of "Age" in the "Edit/Calculate" of "Date of birth mother" and "Date of delivery". It is anti-educational and very intriguing for me. - In the "Edit/Calculate", I cannot find time difference, but fractions of a day. Is this expected ? Otherwise why not put a program each variable like in "Check" in the old "Epidata Entry"? Should I use epidata entry or epidata manager

Dearl all: I have been using epidata entry for some time, but I never wrote to the mailing list before. I am about to start a new project and was wondering whether I should keep using epidata entry or switch to epidata manager, after read the announce on the download website: "The EpiData Database Manager (short:EpiData Manager) will replace current EpiData Entry for database and data documentation management, such as development of new data files, modifying structures, documentation etc." Specifically, I would be pleased if you can advice me about: 1) how stable is EpiData Manager in comparisson with Entry (particularly the linux version). 2) Are the new features in Manager worthy enough to switch. 3) Shall I have to learn it all over again (is it too different) 4) My project is essentially the final version of a previous pilot study, the questionnaires I used were modified, but a substantial part of them weren't modified. Dear Nicolás, Nice that you use the mailing list. To add just few lines on Jamie's suggestions. Use the EpiData Entry (classic) for your serious project until the all functions are implemented in the Data Manager (just to avoid frustration going through each variable to add the check, work that you have already done). Unless that you can import the check file too with your rec.file. 2) Are the new features in Manager worthy enough to switch. J) If you are not using related files or calculations within your .chk file, the answer is yes. Those two features are not yet implemented. T) For time saving in designing form: yes, you can copy and paste your text from MS Word/Notepad into EpiData Manager and move easily the fields. 3) Shall I have to learn it all over again (is it too different) J) Not that different; the concepts are the same. T) Very intuitive, you are not going to spend much time on finding out how it is easy to use the EpiData Manager. 4) My project is essentially the final version of a previous pilot study, the questionnaires I used were modified, but a substantial part of them weren't modified. I was planning to adapt my old .qes and .chk files for this project. Is this possible if I switch to manager? J) You can import your existing .rec files, including data, and then modify your project entry screen; or you could start from scratch. It is worth figuring out how to create new fields with the shortcut keys. T) Yes it is possible, but you can copy and paste the text from questionnaire (.qes) then setting your check in the appropriate fields (where you will spend some times doing it for each variable). My suggestion is that you stick to the old version then modify or add few variables/check for your project. After that you can continue exploring how to use the new version and see its functionality during your spare time (if any). Dear all A new version for testing was uploaded yesterday. The intention was that all issues have been adressed such that in the beginning of 2013 we can change the uploaded version to a general production version. Please find the updated versions at http://www.epidata.dk/testing.php Changes are as follows: Manager: * Updated designer form (moved icons) * Updated shortcuts on keyboard etc. to correct wiki. * Simplified import and add structure to a single method. * Pasting fields and sections is adapted to shift 20,20 pixels from original position. * Export forms adapted for (hopefully) more intuitive action. * If you open EntryClient from within Manager the user is asked if project should close and open in entryclient. * A new field attribute on automatic time fields to allow for three assets: set at new record, set on first save and save on update/edit * Recent files list is shared between Manager and EntryClient * Installation is now operating system specific and NOT dependent on java. Please test in the following 1-2 weeks and in the first week of 2013 we will fix any reported issue before releasing this version as the next public release. problems with import/export to stata

Hi Hope to get some help with a few problems. I'm a new epidata user and have downloaded manager v1.1.2 and entry v 1.1.1.1 - seemed to be the newest reliable version. Please correct me if wrong. I need to import some basic data from stata, add new variables in epidata, enter data and export it back to stata. So far importing data works fine, it's ok adding new variables and clicking "tools" - "export to stata" and "ok" works too. But back in stata the storage format has been change in some of my original data (eg string %10s - changed to %207s), and as well in some of the newly defined. Also missing data is in some cases "." in other ".z". I'm using stata 11 or 12 and have tried correcting the settings in "edit" - "settings" - "export" and "field definitions". It's not too deficult making it to a correct format while in stata - it's just a bit annoying. But whats worse - I tired importing it back to epidata again - making a few changes and then exporting to stata once more and then some of the storage types had completely changed - eg integer to float. Any suggestions? I downloaded epidata 3.1 as well but it does not seem to be compatible with importing stata newer than version 8. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Anne

Dear EpiData list, After spending a whole day to explore the newly released EpiData Manager and EpiData EntryClient, I have some comments: 1. The new EpiData Manager is not as flexible as the older version in which I can add code for check file. For example, I cannot use EpiData Manager to calculate BMI. Or if I have 10 questions about mental health then I have no way to calculate the total score. The patients in some studies should be referred to psychiatrist if they have a mental health score > cutoff point at the time of assessment. There should be “EDIT” like the olde version. 2. Another example to show that “EDIT” to check data entry should be included. In the old EpiData, I can add some codes to do extra things. Ex: when I enter postal code for Vietnam, the city/province variable includes only cities or provinces in Vietnam. Or if I enter postal code for Australia, the city/province variable only has option to choose among Australian cities. No way to do this in this version. 3. I can enter data using Unicode font but when I export the data to CSV or STATA…, they do not work. It does not appear correctly (Vietnamese). 4. I love the way the old Epidata align fields because the variable names are aligned to the right of the screen. 5. The undo, redo symbol should be on the menu bar as users may need them 6. In Epidata Manager, Tools > EpiData EntryClient should open the form that users are working on. This is because the data manager will need to look at the format of the data entry form or want to test the form. 7. The Tools > Report should have an option for “code book” as we may need it to check the data. In the old version, the code book includes information about the mean, … 8. If the double entry file has password, then “Incorrect Password” message appears when validating data. No box appear for entering password in this case. 9. In the old EpiData, we can create parent-child data file which is very helpful in community survey or longitudinal data with the same baseline information. I cannot do this in this new version. I have some year experience teaching EpiData at the university, so I am happy to be the tester or to contribute something to this very interesting and helpful version. inconsistens between mutlible formulars

My problem is hard to describe - of course. ;) I have 7 formulars with EpiData. There is a ID-field in each of it. After exporting them to Stata-files it is important that the order of the data rows fits to the other Stata-files. For example ID "X77" should appear in each 7 data sets in the same row. But it doesn't. Sometimes there are errors in it. Now I want to figure out, how this can happen? Does it happen if I reedit an entry or something like that. Do you have an idea? Christian Buhtz

Dear all, When I use the new versions of manager and entryclient, I encountered some problems in win7 and xp. 1) manager 1.3.0.9 (using sample.epx) a)When I export the file sample.epx to SPSS file, the software gave me the warning: >Warning # 1151 >A field to be read under the EDATE format is invalid. Dear colleagues, I have designed a long questionnaire (more than 600 lines) for national survey data. Clearly, I could have done related rec files, unfortunately the data entry Clerc wanted all questionnaire on one page. After reading few records using the analysis or view data there appears to be a problem. Although some fields have been entered in the data entry form, the data does not show in the analysis (using Epidata Analysis, Stata, Excel). Is there any other way to analyis this data beside editing manuelly ? Dear All On the testing page: http://www.epidata.dk/testing.php You will now find a revised version for download of EpiData Manager and EntryClient These have further bug-fixes in relation to copy and paste fields. the manager is now version 1.3.0.9 and EntryClient 1.3.0.4 Additionally we are adapting EpiData Analysis to a common form of having documents in the same folders as Manager and EntryClient and also that the installer programme will conform to more recent security principles in Windows 7 etc. As a first test of this a new installer is now found at: Analysis 2.2.2.179: http://www.epidata.dk/downloads/setupepidatastat_2.2.2.179.exe One single file can be started in English, French, Spanish or Chinese. If you use Windows XP non-asian version the Chinese part will look strange. Notice it is ONLY the installer which comes in different languages NOT the software as such. EpiData Manager (1.3.0.8) and Entryclient (1.3.0.4) release for testing!

Dear List Fridag 16th november, we released a new exprimental test-version of EpiData Manager (v 1.3.0.8) and EpiData EntryClient (v 1.3.0.4) The new version is available for download on our testing website: http://epidata.dk/testing.php#alpha This release contains only minor bug-fixes. The main focus is our new installation wizards. We have created individual installations for Linux, Mac and Windows with respect to each type of operating system. This also means that Java is no longer required to install the program, using the wizards. The full list of changes can be found at: http://epidata.dk/epidatamanager.changelog.txt http://epidata.dk/epidataentryclient.changelog.txt Due to the way security has changes with Mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion), it may be that the settings for security should be changed. Otherwise a security message may appear blocking the use of these program. This will be the last experimental release and if no major issues are raised within a short period of time we will release the current experimental version as a "pre-public" release test version. Jens, The problems of access violation was observed in a file of a project imported from Epidata 3.1, which I believe was in turn imported from EpiInfo 6.4d. When I created a new project and tested all over, it seemed to work fine. Did you tried this function with imported files or new projects?Nevertheless I can export a part of the original rec file, say with a dozen or more records and send it to you, if you want to try to reproduce the error. Jens, Thank you very much for your effort. If this really works out, it will change the my work rationale from water to wine. I would like to make a other suggestions/comments: 1. Make the default "copy to clipboard" setting = "%q: %d %v \n", at least for me it is more reasonable. 2. Tested with \t but tab makes the questions less line up after pasting at notepad. 3. Nevertheless, common spaces works fine and other characters such as ":" also seem to work fine. 4. When there is fields such as sex, where there is a value such 1 or 2, and a value label, such as Male and Female, the setting above will paste something like "Patient sex: 2 female" which is a little weird, mainly for those who later will read the medical record and are not awere these came from dataentry codes. Is it possible to make a setting code to omit the field value if a value label is available? A major problem... I tested the copy to clipboard function and it seems it may work fine only with the current record, not yet saved. When I go back to saved records and try to run "copy to clipboard" from these records an error comes: "Access violation. Press ok to ignore data corruption. Press cancel to kill the program." When I press OK, the data does not go to the clipboard. When I press cancel, entreyclient is closed. Therefore I cant copy/paste a saved record. Is there a solution/workaround for this? Dear EpiData Friends, Since 2004 the institution I work at, adopted electronic medical record. For me and colleagues which work with clinical research, we have for long working doubling our efforts in registering the required information, at the medical chart and at data entry. Currently most of us work like this: 1.Patient evaluation 2.typing research information at electronic medical records 3.retrieving information from the computer and writing into paper CRF 4.typing the CRF data from paper into computer data entry again. This routine complies with GCP as we consider the electronic medical record the source document. For long we have talked about more automatic and less laborious, and less prompt to error routine. Here one must understand that the medical appointment occurs in a room where a computer is available. We would like that this process to be something like: 1. Patient evaluation 2. The physician type in the information of that visit into a data entry during patient evaluation 3. This data entry is able to transport this data as a text to be pasted at the text entry of the electronic mdical record 4. The physician is able to edit the electronic medical record for aditional information. The main points here is: there is less work in filling forms and records; and there will be less steps in data traveling where mistakes could be inserted by researchers or typing team; and would keep the medical record as source document. Currently Im not awere of any software able to do some exporting in text from the data entry that could allow the process change. If EpiData was up to do something like this, after data entry of a particular record, there would a magic button somewhere able to copy to clipboard the text (like in notepad) with all variables labels and value labels or variable values. Import of REC files

The published version has two icons for importing a) structure or b) data. Data import from REC files works The test version v1.3.0.6 has a single icon (second from the left in the second row) or CTRL+I) to "Import data and structure from file". Trying to import a REC file from here imports only the structure but no data. Even better is a programmer's editor (there are many) that can identify the end of each line in case you have a line with more than 80 characters in the data section (e.g. some spaces beyond the !). New test version of EpiData Manager - (v 1.3.0.5) - print dataforms

The new version is available for download on our testing website: http://epidata.dk/testing.php#alpha In this test version we have changes the printing routine to support printing directly to a printer, rather than to SVG files (vector graphics). In addition to support printing a number of minor bugs have also been fixed. Dear Jens Lauritsen, EpiData Association Denmark I am the co-ordinator of the Clinical Epidemiology Unit of my medical college in South India. We teach research methods to post graduate students and have been teaching epi-data for a few years, with a lot of positive reviews from students. We have now been trying out the epidata manager that you have introduced.We thought it would be a good idea to switch to teaching this to our residents rather than the earlier epidata. In this context, i need your advice 1. Is epidata manager ready for use by students-ie is it still in testing? 2. This is so far limited to dragging and sizing of controls. * Importing data and structures is combined into the same funtionality.
