Dorothy S. Severin's Review of the Edinburgh Festival production of Celestina by Calixto Bieito

Calixto Bieito's production of Celestina for the Edinburgh Festival in August 2004 was predictable but exciting. Predictable for those who had seen his Don Giovanni at English National Opera and would be unfazed by a modernized cross-dressing production which takes place in a Spanish bar; exciting for Celestina specialists who would appreciate Bieito's deep knowledge of the text and his teasing out of barely submerged themes like Celestina's latent lesbianism. Kathryn Hunter negotiates the role of a male-suited and shaven-head bawd with her customary aplomb, and adds the correct quantity of wisecracking humour and scatological reference to the role, with the odd touch of Theâtre de Complicité training in Brechtian alienation (as in: if you think that this farrago of old saws is boring, there are hundreds of pages of this stuff in the uncut version). In fact, John Clifford's translation of the Comedia has been cut again by nearly half in order to make way for onstage music by the Sinfónica de Gavá (guitar, vocals, keyboard, bass, drums), and most of the love affair between Melibea and Calisto goes for a Burton. The production fuses on the picaresque part of the narrative. Calisto is a wealthy ne'er-do-well; his servants become his low-life pals at the bar-cum-brothel, and the rest of the entourage are prostitutes in Celestina's employ. Celestina's magic spell is transformed into a Black Mass, and Melibea is enchanted by a combination of magic and the drugs which Celestina procures for her. The most effective moment of the production is the sudden switch from comedy to tragedy. Celestina auctions a virgin and intellectually-challenged Lucrecia (Sarah Paul) to the highest bidder, to laughter from the audience; when the distressed and injured girl returns to the stage the laughter of the audience freezes in their throats. The demise of Celestina, Sempronio (Neil McKinven) and Pármeno (Daniel Cerqueira) follows shortly afterwards. Our attention then shifts to the story of the lovers, but we see only one assignation. Calisto (Christopher Fox) takes Melibea as the girl lies in an opium dream; after their coupling she has to ask him who he is, despite the passion she has declared for him before his appearance. Calisto wanders off, but, as far as we can see, departs unscathed. Laura Rogers then does an outstanding job on Melibea's farewell to her father, as does David Acton on Pleberio's lament. The most important parts of these two speeches have been retained by Bieito. But the audience is left with the awful realization that Calisto's death is a delusion imagined by Melibea in a state of consciousness affected by witchcraft and drugs. Collectors of Celestina memorabilia may be amused by the additional note that I was the featured 'talking head' on the topic of Celestina at the Edinburgh Festival, a lecture that was attended by a couple hundred tourists who had been booked to see the production. Alicia Moreau de Justo 1500, (C1107AFD), Buenos Aires, República Argentina. Resúmenes: Deberá remitirse por vía electrónica o por correo regular a las direcciones que figuran al pie de esta circular un resumen en lengua española de no más de 250 palabras, antes del 30 de Noviembre de 2004. En dicho resumen se incluirán asimismo los siguientes datos: Título del trabajo, nombre completo del autor o los autores, lugar o lugares de trabajo, domicilio, teléfono, correo electrónico. Ponencias: Deberán presentarse indefectiblemente antes del 30 de Junio de 2005, en persona en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras o remitidas por correo regular a la dirección que figura al pie de esta circular. Se entregarán una copia impresa y otra electrónica, en diskette con programa Word, según las siguientes normas: 1. Tamaño de hoja A4. 2. Letra Times New Roman, tamaño 12 para el cuerpo del trabajo, las citas y la bibliografía, y tamaño 10 para las notas. 3. Doble espacio para el cuerpo del trabajo y la bibliografía, simple espacio para las citas y las notas. 4. Notas al final del documento 5. Extensión máxima de 10 páginas, excluyendo notas y bibliografía. 6. En la primera página deberán constar, en este orden, el título del trabajo, el nombre completo del autor o los autores, y el lugar o los lugares de trabajo del autor o los autores. 7. Se recomienda encarecidamente la adopción del sistema de referencia bibliográfica autor-año-página o bien autor-título abreviado-página. Lectura de Trabajos: Cada trabajo dispondrá de un tiempo de 20 minutos para su lectura. No se permitirá la lectura de trabajos cuyos autores no estén presentes. Aranceles: El pago de aranceles se realizará exclusivamente en efectivo en la sede de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, en el momento de la acreditación el 17 de Agosto de 2005. En el caso de que una ponencia sea presentada por más de un autor, cada uno de ellos deberá abonar la inscripción completa. La crítica celestinesca en Amor, curiosidad, Prozac y dudas

Estimados celestinistas, Leyendo la popularísima novela española de 1997 de Lucía Etxebarría "Amor, curiosidad, Prozac y dudas" me he encontrado con este curioso diálogo entre la protagonista y su amiga, en el que hay una referencia tanto a La Celestina --algo frecuente en muchas novelas-- como a los que nos dedicamos a estudiarla, cosa menos frecuente: Era mi novio hasta anteayer, Gema me mira asombrada. -¿Lo habéis dejado? -Lo hemos dejado hace un mes, y estoy hecha polvo. Como casi ni me ves últimamente ni te has enterado. -Si se trata de un reproche velado, te recuerdo una vez más que he estado muy ocupada con mi tesis. -Tú y tu tesis ... "Melibea la primera feminista". Típico tema de bollera concienciada. Resulta que ahora una mema que no hace más que quedarse en casa y suspirar por un lechuguino es la primera feminista. Lo que hay que oír. A vosotras las de hispánicas se os va un poco la olla. He tocado su talón de Aquiles, su tesis, su obra magna, su alhaja, su prenda, la niña de sus ojos. -No empieces, que lo de mi tesis lo hemos discutido muchas veces. Aparte que la tuya tampoco es una maravilla. "Diferentes concepciones del sentimiento amoroso a lo largo de la historia." Te darán un punto extra por la originalidad ....
