To all U of M students:
This message includes important information for students writing exams during the December 2013 Exam Period.
The Schedule of Final Exams for the December 2013 Exam series, including room and seat assignments*, is available. To find out when and where your exams have been scheduled, visit: Final Examinations<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/finals/index.html>.
*Room and seat assignments for Agriculture Diploma program students will be available shortly.
Please note:
1. Students are encouraged to review the exam schedule for:
* Conflicts: If a conflict exists within the Schedule of Final Exams, you must notify the Registrar's Office immediately - this includes exams scheduled three-in-a-row (i.e. Monday evening, Tuesday morning and afternoon).
* Changes: Check the schedule again before your exam dates for any changes.
2. Remember that students must remain available until all exam and test obligations are complete. Travel plans are not an acceptable reason for missing an exam.
3. Photo identification must be brought to the exam. Bring your Student Photo ID Card (preferred) or another piece of photo identification.
4. The U of M has changed its Examination Regulations. Some of these changes include:
* Deferred Exams:
o New 48-hour limit for deferred exam requests - requests must be received by the faculty/school office within 48-hours from the scheduled exam date.
o Retroactive deferral requests - these are granted only for specific situations in which a student is unexpectedly unable to complete their exam; students must speak to the exam invigilator prior to leaving the exam.
* Exam conflict arrangements:
o Arrangements made for exam conflicts due to specific athletic, academic or religious obligations will now be made in the students' faculty/school office, as per the Deferred Exam Procedure. These should be requested as soon as the conflict becomes known.
* Personal belongings:
o Unauthorized materials are not permitted in the exam room; students are encouraged to bring with them only those items required for the exam that they are writing.
o All items brought with a student which are not required for the exam must be kept under their exam table - this includes coats and jackets, which are not to be placed on the back of chairs.
o Students may not access the space beneath the exam table where their belongings are stored at any time during the exam.
* For complete information on policy changes, visit: New Final Exams & Final Grades Policy<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/examinationspolicy.html>.
Resources: Final Exams<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/finals/index.html>, Exam Regulations<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/examinationspolicy.html>, Exam Schedules<http://umanitoba.ca/student/examination_schedules.html>, Exam Conflicts<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/finals/681.html>, Deferred and Missed Exams<http://umanitoba.ca/student/records/finals/682.html>.

MALWARE WARNING – Cryptolocker Ransomware
Many of you may have heard of a recent threat, referred to as "Cryptolocker Ransomware". This is an extremely dangerous type of malware that has impacted several thousand systems around the world. We have had one reported incident on campus this week, so it is important that all users are aware of the threat.
The malware encrypts files on an infected system, then demands payment from the victim in order to decrypt and recover the files.
The primary means of infection is via phishing emails with malicious attachments. The emails may claim to be from your bank, or claim to be a tracking message from a delivery company, such as FedEx or UPS.
PREVENTION
We are currently seeing several blocked messages related to this attack on our Ironport (Exchange) and Spamhaus (CC Mail) filters. But tactics to bypass filters can change without notice. Be cautious with email on any account (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, QQ, Facebook, etc…)
DO NOT follow unsolicited web links in messages and be cautious with all email attachments.
When in doubt contact the Help Desk for assistance.
LOWER YOUR RISK!
* Perform regular backups of important files and store this data in a secure offline location.
* Keep your operating system and application software up to date with the latest patches.
* Maintain up-to-date anti-virus software.
The University provides secure file storage for faculty, staff and students. Consult your local IT support staff or the Help Desk for details.
University of Manitoba Help Desk - 204-474-8600 or support(a)umanitoba.ca
MORE TECHNICAL DETAILS
Once a system is infected, the malware restricts access to files by encrypting Microsoft Documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and PDF's found on all attached storage. This may include local and external drives, USB drives, network drives and cloud storage.
Some current indicators of the malicious emails (which may change at any time) are:
Attachments follow the naming convention of "Form_[random letters or numbers].zip
(example: Form_nfcausa.org.zip, Form_20130810.exe, Form_f4f43454.zip)
Spoofed Sender: "fraud(a)aexp[.]com" "Dewayne(a)nfcausa[.]org"
Sample Subject: "Annual Form - Authorization to Use Privately Owned Vehicle on State Business"
For more information Google the following: "recognizing and avoiding email scams" or "cryptolocker"

DT
