Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research and International) And Dr. Annemieke Farenhorst, Associate Vice-President (Research) Dear University of Manitoba Community, Thank you for joining us at the first Strategic Research Planning Session, during which we introduced the Strategic Research Planning Committee and the engagement questions to start our conversation. We invite you to attend the second Community Engagement Session as we continue our Strategic Research Planning process. Facilitated by members of the Strategic Research Planning Committee, this session will allow for interactive small group discussions to address key questions related to Indigenous Research. If you are joining virtually, you will be able to move between virtual break out rooms to provide your feedback on each question. Summaries from each group discussion will be shared with the larger group for an open conversation. Participants will also have a chance to provide their thoughts anonymously using sticky notes, which will be shared with the Committee. We hope to see you there. I want to extend my deepest condolences and best wishes to those who have been affected by the devastating earthquakes in these countries. We are here for you, and we support you during this time. As we head into the Winter Break period, I hope all students have many opportunities to relax, recharge, and enjoy some of the winter fun happening around town. Here are some events and activities you might want to check out, along with a few reminders of the resources and supports available to you throughout the break. Louis Riel Day On Monday we honour Louis Riel, the Founding Father of Manitoba, with events and activities across the province. Eternity is a journalist and an assistant professor in the School of Journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her lecture is titled, "What does it mean to be an equity-seeking student on a Canadian campus today?" Free books will be available at the following locations from Tuesday, February 21 on a first-come, first-served basis: * UMSU and UMGSA offices * Elizabeth Dafoe Library * 8 books will be available in the Reserve Lockers for 5-day borrowing * Jim Peebles Science and Technology Library (Faculty of Science) * E.K. The 2023 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition is back in person. This competition gives graduate students the opportunity to present their research in plain language (in three minutes) using a single slide to illustrate their ideas. They will be assessed by judges at the heats, where three challengers from each heat will advance to the final competition taking place on March 30. "Recognizing anti-Black Racism" Survey Dear University of Manitoba community member The University of Manitoba Black Association (UMBA) is an initiative dedicated to supporting the success of future and present African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) students, staff and faculty at the University of Manitoba and in the broader Winnipeg community. The initiative purposely pays attention to the social oppression among Black U of M community members. They experience the intersectional reality anti-Black racism in the forms of sexism, gender biases, and ability. UMBA is led by a collaboration of Black alumni, staff, students and current faculty. The UMBA committee requests your participation in the "Recognizing anti-Black Racism" survey. The fully confidential survey is for The University of Manitoba's students, staff and faculty. Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary, and all of your responses are held in confidence. None of the responses will be connected to identifying information. The survey is to be used as a needs assessment for UMBA's approach on how to develop Afro-centric programs and initiatives that serve to challenge anti-Black racism, which is open to all U of M community members, and broader Winnipeg communities. The data collected will create pro-social and inclusive yearly programming for Black students, staff and faculty. UMBA will encourage non-African decent people to participate in its events. Anti-racism report and recommendations

[cid:a2116288-4117-4369-8b77-a251ab8855d8] Message from Naomi Andrew, Vice-President (Administration) and Catherine Cook, Vice-President (Indigenous) UM community members: As co-chairs of the Anti-Racism Task Force, we are pleased to share that today we have launched UM’s anti-racism webpage<https://umanitoba.ca/anti-racism> and released an Interim Report<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2023-01/anti-racism-task-force-int…> that includes recommendations to address racism. These foundational recommendations, focusing on education, policies and processes, lay the groundwork for dismantling racism in all its forms throughout our UM community. The Anti-Racism Task Force<https://news.umanitoba.ca/dismantling-racism-um-establishes-anti-racism-tas…> was established a year ago in February 2022 - a key step in advancing racial justice. This Interim Report reflects the progress of the Anti-Racism Task Force and presents recommendations for immediate action based on the significant work already done by community members, stakeholder groups and key offices within the university and on the expertise of the Task Force members.
