Getting to Campus This Fall: What You Need to Know

September 9 marks the first day of classes for many students at UM and we can’t wait to welcome you! As you get ready for Fall Term, here are a few updates to help you plan your commute and navigate the Fort Garry campus. Road construction Roadwork on and around the Fort Garry campus may affect your commute, including construction on Dysart Road, University Crescent, Pembina Highway, Abinojii Mikanah and Kings Drive. Please expect delays and plan ahead. Allow for an additional 15 to 30 minutes on average. Check UM Services Disruptions<https://umanitoba.ca/facilities/service-disruptions> for a full listing of roadwork around campus and to receive updates. Winnipeg Transit Winnipeg Transit’s fall schedule begins September 6. Before travelling to campus, check your route and schedule: * Find your bus routes<https://winnipegtransit.com/routes> * Find stops and schedules<https://winnipegtransit.com/stops> * Plan your route with Navigo trip planner<https://winnipegtransit.com/navigo?mode=depart_after&dateTime=now> When planning a trip with Navigo, make sure you input a date after September 6 to see the fall schedule. All students registered for classes in the Fall term will have unlimited access to Winnipeg Transit through the U-Pass, unless you have manually opted out. To avoid long line-ups, don’t wait for the first day to pick up your U-Pass… they are available NOW at the UMSU Service Centre at Fort Garry Campus or Answers at the Bannatyne Campus. Important upcoming changes to multi-factor authentication Dear students, staff and faculty, The University of Manitoba would like to share information regarding Microsoft’s upcoming changes to multi-factor authentication (MFA), which are intended to strengthen account security and reduce the risk of phishing attacks. Microsoft has announced that it will begin retiring its built-in SMS text message and voice call verification options. Beginning September 1, 2026, people who use SMS text message or voice call verification for MFA may see prompts asking them to register a more secure authentication method, such as: * Microsoft Authenticator<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/my-security/set-up-mfa…> * Passkeys – To add a passkey, go to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info<https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info> → click "Add sign-in method" → select "Passkey" and follow the steps. * Hardware security keys<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/my-security/request-to…> – OTP (one-time password) key fobs for example or any which are FIDO (Fast Identity Online)-compliant No immediate action is required. SMS and voice-based MFA will continue to work for now. However, if you are not already using one of these authentication methods, Information Services and Technology recommends registering for a more secure option as soon as Microsoft prompts you to do so. This will help ensure a smooth transition and improve the security of your university account. IST is currently reviewing Microsoft’s changes and assessing options to support our community members.
