In our communities, accessibility affects all of us. Whether you live with a disability, have experienced barriers due to illness, injury or age, or know someone who has, you've become aware of the impact and significance of accessibility.
The University of Manitoba is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible community for all faculty, students and staff. We fully support the Accessibility for Manitobans Act<http://www.accessibilitymb.ca/> (AMA), which became law in December 2013. We have developed some accessible programming to ensure that everyone can enjoy our campuses and what the university has to offer.
Today, we invite all faculty, students and staff to provide feedback on any barriers to accessibility in our work and learning environment. We will consider all suggestions and identify ways we can improve our organization, building upon our goals as identified in the U of M's strategic plan, of providing accessibility and reasonable accommodation.
The AMA is important for our university and the province as a whole. The government of Manitoba passed the act on December 5, 2013 and declared the goal of being fully accessible by 2023.
The AMA will be implemented over time and includes five main standards with individual timeframes, to be addressed in order: customer service, employment, information and communication, transportations and built environment.
Accessibility Plan
Under the act, each organization is required to develop and publish a plan of strategies to identify, prevent and remove barriers to accessibility. The plan will cover accessibility issues under each standard as it comes into effect, eventually covering all five. The University is obligated to produce its first plan by the end of 2016, and to update it every second year. This survey and consultation process will inform our plan.
The U of M has a history of improving accessibility and awareness through student advocacy and accessibility services, the office of human rights and conflict management, and initiatives such as Access Awareness Day. Recently, the U of M has made significant strides in accessibility, including revision of the Accessibility policy<http://www.umanitoba.ca/admin/governance/media/Accessibility_Policy_-_2015_…> in January 2015 and the Bona Fide Academic Requirements initiative<http://news.umanitoba.ca/the-university-of-manitoba-is-leading-the-way/>, which is currently underway. More information on the University's efforts in relation to the AMA can be found here: http://umanitoba.ca/admin/vp_admin/ofp/ohrcm/index.html.
There are many different types of barriers, both visible and invisible. Examples of areas for consideration include: technological and systemic; attitudinal; physical and architectural; information and communications.
The University of Manitoba needs to hear from you to understand the barriers to accessibility in our work and learning environment in order to identify ways to improve our organization.
Please take a few minutes to reply to the Survey<http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/hrsurveys/accessibility-at-the-u-of-m-surve…> . Let's work together towards an inclusive and accessible environment for all.
Sincerely,
David

I am proud to share with you that this year the University of Manitoba is participating as an official sponsor in the Winnipeg Pride Festival, to be held May 27 through June 5. I invite and encourage all members of the University community (staff, students, faculty, alumni) to engage in this vibrant event in support of the LGBTTQ* community.
The Pride festival's 2016 theme is Be Authentic. I know that within the University of Manitoba community, students, staff and faculty are committed to allyship and maintaining a welcoming work and learning environment, and that many members of the University of Manitoba family, including alumni, count themselves with pride as members of the LGBTTQ* community. As well, across many disciplines, researchers and scholars are exploring LGBTTQ* themes on an ongoing basis. Ours is undeniably a meaningful and authentic engagement with this subject, helping generate deeper understanding of complex and emerging issues, and I invite you during this week and throughout the year to avail yourselves of our faculty's rich scholarly output on the subject.
Members of LGBTTQ* communities and allies are welcome to join us in showing their pride and support of inclusion and diversity. Over the course of the week, our sponsorship of the festival offers numerous opportunities for both fun and thoughtful engagement:
* Participate in the Pride Working Group to help shape the event (contact: susie.taylor(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:susie.taylor@umanitoba.ca>)
* Receive free LGBTTQ* Awareness training, available on both campuses (register online here: https://umanitoba.gosignmeup.com/Public/Course/Browse)
* Walk with the University of Manitoba float (the UM shuttle bus) as part of the Pride Parade on June 5th (contact: susie.taylor(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:susie.taylor@umanitoba.ca>)
* Visit the University of Manitoba booth at the Pride Festival at the Forks on June 5th
* Follow the hashtag #umpride
Beginning on Monday, May 30th, and throughout Pride Week, the Pride Flag will be raised and flown on both campuses. A flag-raising ceremony will be held on Bannatyne campus at 8:30 a.m. on May 30th in the Brody Atrium, and I invite you all to join us. The flag will also fly from the Fort Garry Campus at the steps leading to the Pedway, at the intersection of Chancellor Matheson Drive and University Crescent. I'm sure you'll notice it as you traverse the campus.
In Taking our Place, the University of Manitoba's Strategic Plan for 2015-20, we speak of our commitment to "forging connections to foster high-impact community engagement" as a main priority.
This is our opportunity to Be Authentic and Take Our Place in support of this important community celebration.
Sincerely,
David

This morning at the College of Medicine convocation, moments before 106 new physicians pledged the Hippocratic Oath during their graduation ceremony, we shared an announcement of a monumental gift to the University of Manitoba, the largest ever single gift made to this institution:
Alumni Dr. Ernest and Mrs. Evelyn Rady gifted $30 million to the Faculty of Health Sciences in support of students, research, and places and spaces of learning and discovery.
We are tremendously grateful to Ernest and Evelyn Rady for the amazing generosity and confidence they have shown our institution. Their support will have a transformational impact on all of us here at the University of Manitoba and on the health and wellness of the entire population of Manitoba.
In honour of these gifts, I was pleased also to announce at Medicine Convocation that the Board of Governors and Senate have declared that the Faculty of Health Sciences will hereby be known as the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and that the College of Medicine will hereby be known as the Max Rady College of Medicine.
Dr. Max Rady, Ernest's father, graduated from the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Medicine in 1921, and practiced gynecology and obstetrics in Winnipeg as a highly respected physician for many decades.
Please join me in congratulating our colleagues and peers in the Faculty of Health Sciences, which is made up of the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Rehabilitation Sciences, on this important day in their history, as they pursue their ongoing journey of collaboration and cooperation.
Let's all celebrate the Rady Foundation gift at a special surprise party for Ernest Rady at 1:15 p.m. today in the Brodie Centre Atrium at the Bannatyne Campus. I hope to see many of you there to mark this momentous occasion.
For those of you on Fort Garry Campus, a shuttle bus will be departing at 12:30 pm for Bannatyne Campus from the bus stop on Dafoe Road outside Tier Building (space is limited).
Sincerely,
David
