University of Manitoba President Michael Benarroch announced today that classes will continue and that the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) has agreed to bring UM’s latest offer to its membership.
“We are thankful that students are able to continue their classes and academic activities,” said Benarroch. “To our faculty, we value and respect you as indispensable collaborators in our shared mission of advanced research and higher education. We are pleased that our community will be able to continue teaching, learning and researching at UM without interruption while the voting process takes place.”
Today’s announcement follows mediation overseen by independent mediator Arne Peltz. We thank Mr. Peltz for his hard work and both negotiating teams for their dedication to the collective bargaining process.
UM’s offer is subject to ratification by UMFA members. To respect the ratification process, the University will not discuss the specifics of the offer at this time except to say that it met the 2020-21 province-issued wage mandate to hold the line on salary increases.

Dear students,
As you know, on Tuesday it was announced that the Province of Manitoba will move to the Critical (Red) level in the Pandemic Response System effective today, November 12th, 2020. I want to share UM's response and remind you of the many supports, services and resources that remain open to you remotely. As always, your personal health, well-being and academic success remain important priorities for us.
In response to the new Provincial restrictions, this message<https://news.umanitoba.ca/a-message-from-janice-ristock-provost-and-vice-pr…> from our Provost outlines UM's new health and safety measures. Most notable for you:
· If you are required to come to campus, you must wear a 3-ply disposable mask at all times on UM grounds.
· In those instances where students are required to wear a specific type of mask or personal protective equipment (PPE) due to the nature of the in-person activity you are required to engage in, you will receive instructions from your instructor.
· Limit your time on campus as much as possible.
· All but essential lunch spaces and common spaces will be closed. All other UM spaces will be closed except for a reduced number of study spaces<http://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students#whats-open-on-campus>.
* It is recommended that you wear eye protection (a shield) for all laboratory work or in situations in which 2-metre physical distancing is not possible.
* All UM sport and recreation facilities will be closed.
* The University Centre Pharmacy will be reduced to 25 per cent of normal capacity.
* The Fort Garry Bookstore will be reduced to 25 per cent of normal capacity and is offering pick up service and online ordering<http://umanitoba.ca/campus/bookstore/index.php>.
Each of us must continue to do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 - to ensure the safety of our community, to maintain our own health and well-being, and so we can get back to learning and connecting in-person soon.
Until that time, UM is here to support you. Learn how<http://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students#personal-support> to care for yourself during this remote learning period, from a health and wellness perspective. Tips and resources on staying well, remaining connected and keeping healthy are also shared regularly on our student Instagram channel, @umstudent.
To help you successfully complete your studies:
· UM Libraries remain available remotely<https://libguides.lib.umanitoba.ca/covid-19-libraryaccess> to assist you virtually with your research and academic pursuits.
· The Academic Learning Centre<https://umanitoba.ca/student/academiclearning/notice.html> continues to provide individual tutoring (in writing, content, and study skills), supplemental instruction sessions, and workshops.
· Career consultants and staff in Career Services can help with the process of faculty/major selection, establishing a career direction, work search and developing a resumé. Register on careerCONNECT<https://www.uofmcareerservices.ca/home/home.htm> or contact the office at 204-474-9456<mailto:204-474-9456> or cs.receptionist(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:cs.receptionist@umanitoba.ca> to make an appointment.
· A host of additional resources and services are listed on the website umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students<http://www.umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students> and are updated regularly.
Hang in there, Bisons! I can't wait for the time when we can all return to in-person activities on our campuses again. Until then, please remain vigilant. Stay safe. Keep well. Remember that we are stronger, together.
My best,
Laurie

Message from Naomi Andrew, Acting Vice-President (Administration)
As communicated on UMToday<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-responds-to-critical-red-level-with-enhanced-r…>, the Province of Manitoba has announced new pandemic restrictions<https://news.gov.mb.ca/news/index.html?item=49496&posted=2020-10-30> effective November 2 that place the Winnipeg area under the critical/red level on the #RestartMB Pandemic Response System. These new measures are being put in place to help stop the growing community transmission of COVID-19.
At UM, all approved in-person teaching activities will continue.
However, in addition to new Provincial restrictions, UM has introduced new measures to ensure the health and safety of our community. The following new UM health and safety measures are effective Monday, November 2:

* The Joyce Fromson Pool and Wayne Fleming Arena will be closed
* Food services will be reduced. Please see: umanitoba.ca/campus-services#eat-on-campus<http://umanitoba.ca/campus-services#eat-on-campus>
* Retail services will be reduced. Please see: https://news.umanitoba.ca/whats-open-on-both-campuses/
UM - ENHANCED RESTRICTIONS:
* All work that may done remotely should be done remotely
* Cancelation or postponement of all in-person discretionary activities (either being contemplated or previously approved)
* Employees accessing our campus(es) to be reduced to a maximum of 30 per cent
* Closure of all but absolutely essential common spaces and lunch spaces
* Individuals are encouraged to limit their time on campus as much as possible
All in-person teaching activities will continue and study spaces<http://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students#whats-open-on-campus> will remain open except for those designated study spaces in the Libraries.
If you have any questions:
· Students - contact your faculty, college or school
· Faculty and staff - contact your dean or supervisor
It is essential that employees and students self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms and/or exposures before attending to any on-campus activities. Complete this questionnaire.<https://www.gov.mb.ca/asset_library/en/coronavirus/covid19_screening_checkl…>
