Good afternoon,
As was announced in the fall,<https://news.umanitoba.ca/dr-janice-ristock-not-seeking-renewal-of-her-term/> Dr. Janice Ristock, after an acclaimed three-decade career at the University of Manitoba in a variety of academic and administrative roles, is not seeking an extension or renewal of her term as Provost and Vice-President (Academic) when it ends in June, 2021. We have embarked on the process of selecting a Provost and Vice-President (Academic)<https://news.umanitoba.ca/search-for-a-provost-and-vice-president-academic/> and have retained Laverne Smith & Associates to assist with this search, which will be comprehensive in scope with an integral portion being a process of consultation.
Reporting to the President and Vice-Chancellor, the Provost is the university's chief academic officer, providing strategic direction, academic planning leadership, and administrative oversight to drive innovation and academic excellence across the university. Working collaboratively with the Vice-President Administration, the Provost sets budget priorities and is responsible for ensuring that the university's budget supports the academic mission. Collaborating closely with the senior leadership of the university and supported by a strong team of a Deputy Provost and Vice-Provosts, Deans and Directors of Faculties, Schools and Colleges, and senior administrative leaders, the Provost leads a broad and complex portfolio of academic and academic support units. Advancing, transforming, and supporting academic priorities, goals, and programs, the Provost will foster an equitable and diverse environment that allows teaching, learning, and research excellence to flourish.
On behalf of the advisory committee I have struck to advise on candidates for the role and on the position more generally, I ask for your assistance in gathering information to support the process.
Your input is being requested by the close of business February 11, 2021. Please click here<https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/UManitobaProvost> to complete a brief questionnaire to be returned to Laverne Smith & Associates. All responses will be held in strict confidence by the consultant and the inclusion of your name is optional.
As this is a very important matter for the University, your input is critical and I would ask you to take the few minutes required to help us in this important undertaking.
I would like to thank you for your time and input into this important leadership appointment.
Sincerely,
Michael

Dear Student,
You are invited to participate in a cross-Canada research study to evaluate post-secondary student stress led by Dr. Brooke Linden (Principal Investigator, Queen’s University). The Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI) was designed to help post-secondary institutions across Canada better target campus mental health services, with the ultimate goal of improving mental health outcomes for students.
To ensure that the PSSI would serve students in the best possible way, students were involved heavily throughout the development and testing of this tool. Now it’s time to use the PSSI at post-secondary institutions across Canada to improve our understanding of the types of stressors students are managing in different parts of the country.
We are looking for student volunteers to complete an online survey a few times over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year. The first survey was conducted in October. We are now looking for volunteers to complete the survey in January and in March. If you did not participate in the survey in October, you can still participate this month! The survey should take you about 20 mins to complete.
As a thank you for participating, you will have the opportunity to submit your e-mail into a draw after each survey for a chance to win one of several $25-$50 gift cards.
If you are interested in participating, please read the attached Letter of Information below prior to completing the survey. The survey can be accessed at the following link:

Dear students,
Happy New Year and welcome to the 2021 Winter Term! I hope that you had a restorative and restful break.
Whether you are new to the UM community or continuing in your studies, we are here to support your personal and academic success. There are a wide range of student supports<https://news.umanitoba.ca/support-for-um-students-whats-available-and-how-t…> available to you - please take advantage of them as needed throughout your academic journey.
As you will have read in President Benarroch's message this week, in keeping with our continued commitment to the safety and wellbeing of the UM community, Summer Term 2021 will be delivered primarily remotely. Please note that registration for Summer Term will open in Aurora on April 5th.
While we are all encouraged by the news that vaccinations are slowly rolling out in Manitoba, each of us must continue to be vigilant in ensuring our own health and safety and that of others in our community. We have created a webpage<https://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students> about COVID-19, specifically for students, that provides a great deal of useful information and resources, including protocols aimed at keeping our community safe, a list of on-campus study spaces, and much more. If you are required to come to campus, the webpage also features a list of what is open on campus<https://news.umanitoba.ca/whats-open-on-both-campuses/>, and how to access those areas.
As you prepare to launch into your courses, please check out the presentation, "Are you ready for Winter term<https://youtu.be/doeOulK3DA8>?" delivered by undergraduate academic advisors. It includes an overview of grading options and how to prepare for a successful semester.
I also encourage you to register for the virtual UM Annual Career Fair<https://umanitoba.ca/careerservices/career-fairs/um-annual-career-fair> taking place January 21st. Over seventy employers are participating! Remember, it's never too early to explore your career options.
And, lastly, if you are new to the University, I encourage you to participate in the winter welcome<https://umanitoba.ca/current-students/first-year/um-commons/winter-welcome> this week. Many outstanding sessions are being offered and, if you missed some of them, recordings will be available.
I will be in touch again as things continue to evolve. Meanwhile, be sure to check your UM email, read the Student Weekly e-newsletter, follow UM Student social media channels, and check the student COVID-19 webpage<https://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/students> regularly.
I am wishing each of you good health and much personal and academic success this term. Remember that we are in this together, and above all, don't be afraid to ask for help<https://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/resources-students> if you need it.
My best,
Laurie Schnarr
