Message from Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students)
The University of Manitoba condemns the tragic and unjust death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody and is committed to supporting impacted students during this challenging time.
Since this complex situation began to unfold in Iran, we have heard from many of you about how this is impacting you personally and academically. We have responded directly to student comments and concerns including sharing available resources and supports.
The Provost's Office has also asked all Deans to ensure Instructors and Sessionals who are supervising or teaching a student impacted by the current situation in Iran exercise compassion during this challenging time.
The Spiritual Care and Multifaith Team is planning a supportive gathering for students, to offer a safe space for sharing and support. It is scheduled to take place today from 4:30-6 p.m. and registrations are via email to spiritual care at spiritualcare(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:spiritualcare@umanitoba.ca>. Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor
Good morning,
September 28 is my first President's Town Hall focused on UM's budget process and financial health, and I welcome all interested faculty, staff and students to join us in-person or online.
As I said in my Fall Term welcome message<https://news.umanitoba.ca/welcome-to-fall-term-2022/>, I value every opportunity to connect with this community and I see this town hall as a meaningful way to demonstrate transparency and engage on these important topics.
Mike Emslie, UM's Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller, and I will provide a detailed presentation and answer any questions you may have about the budget. Following the town hall, we will also be sending out a budget survey to garner additional community input.
I began hosting budget town halls while I was provost at what is now Toronto Metropolitan University, and I sincerely look forward to holding my first such event as UM President now that we are back on campus in full capacity.
You can find more details on the town hall website<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/president/presidents-town-hall>. A reminder that we are asking those who want to attend in-person to RSVP by Sept. 23 to rsvp(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:rsvp@umanitoba.ca> so we can ensure there's room for everyone.
Thank you all for your contributions to making this a thriving community. I hope you will join us and share your feedback.
Sincerely,

The University of Manitoba will close on Sept. 19, 2022 to coincide with the national holiday recently announced by the federal government marking the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Elizabeth reigned as monarch of The Commonwealth for 70 years, the longest of any British ruler. She passed away on Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96. All Canada and Manitoba flags on the Fort Garry campus are flying at half-mast<https://news.umanitoba.ca/flag-lowered-for-queen-elizabeth-ii/> until Sept. 19.
Classes will be cancelled for the day and may be rescheduled on a case-by-case basis. For staff, the day will be a one-time statutory holiday. If you have questions, please reach out to your supervisor or instructor.
UM buildings and services, including libraries, will also be closed on Sept. 19 and will reopen on Sept. 20. The announced federal holiday is for 2022 only and will not be an annual holiday.

Message from Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students)
Dear students,
Welcome to the first day of Fall Term! Whether you're new to the University of Manitoba, coming to campus for the first time, or resuming your in-person study, I wish you the very best as you embark upon a new academic year.
Throughout the year, I will be sending you emails periodically to keep you up to date on information that affects students, and to highlight various resources that I hope you will find helpful. Today's update is intended to support you in navigating the early days of the Fall term successfully.
If you drive to the Fort Garry campus...
Due to ongoing construction by the City of Winnipeg, traffic has been reduced to a single lane each way on University Crescent between Thatcher Drive and Pembina Highway. Given the risk of construction-related delays, it is strongly recommended that students driving to the Fort Garry campus leave for their classes 15-20 minutes earlier than normal to avoid being late. If you want to avoid University Crescent altogether, you can enter the campus using Chancellor Matheson Road (via Pembina Highway).
Welcome new Bison Undergraduates!
Check out UM Commons, a webpage<https://umanitoba.ca/current-students/um-commons> full of information for first-time post-secondary students and students who are new to UM. Here you will find resources to help you achieve personal and academic success throughout your year.
Stepping back into campus life
After a couple of years of primarily remote studies, it's normal to feel excited and happy, but you may also be worried and concerned. If you are feeling stressed or are overwhelmed with the idea of re-entering campus life, check out this set of resources<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/student-health-and-wellness/student-c…> that have been designed to help you navigate this process successfully.
I also recommend these top 10 tips for a successful Fall Term<https://news.umanitoba.ca/top-ten-tips-for-a-successful-fall-term-2022/>.

As we start the Fall term, each one of us has a right to feel safe and be well. Let's work together to create a safer campus for all.
* Understand expectations about respectful behaviour<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/respectful-conduct>
* Take care of your health and wellness<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/health-wellness/healthy-u>
* Be in the know about online safety<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-learning/s…>
* Be aware of the safety resources<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/safety-and-security> available to you
* Download the UM Safe<https://news.umanitoba.ca/mobile-safety-app-launched/> app
* Learn about the Safer Spaces Event Team<https://news.umanitoba.ca/apply-to-be-a-peer-supporter-with-ums-safer-socia…> - peers responding to situations of concern
A welcoming and respectful environment helps our community thrive - be part of it!

Billy says... be a good Bison and help protect our community!
Keep our herd safe and healthy - at UM we are required to wear a mask when indoors and stay home when you are feeling sick. Masks will be provided - visit the health and safety website<https://umanitoba.ca/covid-19/health-safety> for distribution locations and hours. For information on what to do if you become ill and supports available to you, visit the covid-19 student website<https://umanitoba.ca/covid-19/students>.
Together We are Stronger: The Sexual Violence Resource Centre
Always remember - you deserve safety and support on our campuses and off, AND you play an important role in contributing to a campus-wide culture of consent. Please ask before touching and ask before texting.
If you find yourself or others in need of resources or support, UM's Sexual Violence Resource Centre<https://umanitoba.ca/sexual-violence> (SVRC) is available to help. The SVRC uses a trauma-informed approach to offer information, resources, and supports for people who have experienced sexual violence, as well as for those supporting survivors. Any information you disclose is confidential and you are in control of how you want to move forward.
How to reach the Sexual Violence Resource Centre:
Location: 537 UMSU University Centre
