Memo from Mario Lebar, Chief Information Officer
March 27, 2024
Subject: Important Reminder: Cybersecurity Best Practices
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
In light of recent cybersecurity incidents affecting educational institutions, we are reminded of the critical importance of maintaining vigilant cybersecurity practices. Protecting our digital campus is a shared responsibility, and we must all contribute to safeguarding our information and systems.
Here are key habits to enhance our cybersecurity posture:
1. Use strong passwords: Create complex passwords on all your accounts, and consider using a password manager to store your passwords securely.
2. Enable Multi-factor authentication (MFA): The university requires everyone to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) to sign in to university services and applications. Be cautious about unexpected prompts, and never share your one-time MFA code with others. Whenever possible, enable MFA on your personal accounts to add an extra layer of security.
3. Be cautious with email: Look for the UM external warning tag. It is a sure indicator that if the message sounds suspicious, it probably is. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or suspicious sources, and always verify urgent requests. Phishing attempts are a common entry point for cyber threats.
4. Keep software updated: Regularly update your operating system, applications, and anti-virus software to protect against the latest vulnerabilities.
5. Secure your devices: Use strong passwords, encryption, and screen locks to protect your personal devices.
Your awareness and actions can make a significant difference in our collective cybersecurity efforts. If you encounter any suspicious activity or have concerns about your digital security, please contact the IST Service Desk<https://umanitoba.ca/information-services-technology/#contact-us> immediately.

I am very pleased to share that the Board of Governors unanimously approved the re-appointment of President and Vice-Chancellor Michael Benarroch to a second five-year term, beginning July 1, 2025.
The re-appointment of Dr. Benarroch follows the completion of a comprehensive review by the Board's Presidential Review Committee. The Committee, representing students, staff, faculty, and independent Board members, sought and received widespread feedback from members of the UM and broader communities. The Committee looked ahead at the opportunities and challenges facing the University and heard from President Benarroch on his vision for the University of Manitoba into the future.
The Board has full confidence in President Benarroch's ability to lead our university in alignment with its new five-year strategic plan and in support of a university that will lead change for a better Manitoba.
President Benarroch has shown exceptional leadership throughout his first term. He successfully guided the University during the pandemic, always focused on ensuring the continuation of student learning, while maintaining safety for all. He has built an outstanding and cohesive leadership team and has placed a renewed focus on research and innovation, enabling greater success of UM faculty, staff, and students. Under his guidance, UM is a leader in advancing Reconciliation and is home to the National Centre of Truth and Reconciliation. The work of the Anti-Racism Task Force and the President's Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion provides a strong foundation for the University moving forward and fosters belonging, a UM core value. President Benarroch champions the University of Manitoba and its members in the broader community, heightening external engagement and support. His energy and passion for the University of Manitoba are inspiring.
On behalf of the Board of Governors, I wish to express our appreciation to President Benarroch for his authentic leadership and practical wisdom. He acts with integrity and shows deep respect for all members of our UM and greater communities, actively seeking input from diverse voices and engaging to build positive relationships. Dr. Benarroch has an unwavering commitment to a successful University of Manitoba, its students, faculty, and staff, and to the meaningful and positive impact the University has on our province. I look forward to these next five years and where his leadership will take us.
Sincerely,

Dear students,
On Monday, February 26 a student-led event was held on campus during which interactions and views expressed by the featured speaker were in direct opposition to the values upheld by the University of Manitoba.
UM denounces Islamophobia and all forms of discrimination, harassment and prejudice against individuals or groups based on their race, nationality, ethnicity or religion as supported by our Respectful Work and Learning Environment<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/respectful-work-and-learning-environment-poli….> (RWLE) policy and the safety of students is of utmost priority.
We met with UMSU and will respect UMSU's decision to ban Mr. Bassem Eid from UMSU spaces.
The University is committed to ensuring that students feel heard and valued and actively engage with those who express concerns or complaints, working with them to address issues. As a result, I am meeting with individual students and student groups involved in and directly impacted by this event and these conversations are ongoing.
As an academic institution, UM believes in the power of education, dialogue, and the sharing of diverse perspectives. It is essential that this occurs in a manner that is respectful, and grounded in a mutual commitment to the dignity, safety and well-being of others.
The Listening, Learning, Leading<https://news.umanitoba.ca/listening-learning-leading-a-strategy-and-series-…> series, organized by UM's Office of Equity Transformation, is one part of a broader strategy that envisions social change based in human dignity and empathy, and engages people in discourse respectfully.
All events in this series follow community accountability guidelines, with speakers and audience members agreeing to:
* Listen for insight
* Appreciate complexity
* Engage with respect the viewpoint of the speaker(s)
* Question for understanding, rather than to confront or challenge
* Value dialogue
* Debate ideas not the person
* Hold human dignity for all
* Allow speakers to be in spaces of listening and learning with each other and participants
* Carry this approach with you when you share learnings from the event
Visit the Office of Equity Transformation<https://umanitoba.ca/equity-diversity-and-inclusion/learning-and-engagement…> website for information about upcoming series events.
Lastly, I want to remind you that anyone who is experiencing discrimination, prejudice, or disrespectful behaviours in breach of the RWLE policy should not hesitate to reach out to the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management<https://umanitoba.ca/human-rights-and-conflict-management/>.
We are here to support<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports> you and to ensure that the University of Manitoba remains a place of respect, inclusivity and understanding.
Warmly,
...Laurie
