[cid:image001.png@01D90E16.FF0E31D0] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba is extending its mandatory masking policy into the Winter Term to continue supporting a safe work and learning environment. We made this decision after consulting with public health experts and our UM community. We have heard from many of you, and we recognize that there is a diverse range of perspectives on the current need for masks. At this time, many in our community continue to ask that UM maintain its mask policy to support a safe in-person environment. Though we know a mask mandate can't continue indefinitely, we also know that COVID and other respiratory infection cases are high and putting significant strain on our health care system. Masks are among the most effective public health tools to reduce transmission, and use is far greater when supported by a mandate. We will look at easing the mask mandate when it is safer to do so. Going into Winter Term, a mask mandate is the best way to protect our community right now. Staying safe on UM campuses

As exam time approaches, more students are studying on campus, and daylight saving time is bringing darkness at an earlier hour, we want to remind everyone to stay alert. UM is committed to your safety, and has many protocols, programs, and tools in place to help keep you safe. Security Services would like to remind everyone about the Safe Walk Program<https://umanitoba.ca/security/um-safe>, which allows you to request a safe walk 24 hours a day on Fort Garry or Bannatyne campuses. You are also encouraged to contact Security Services any time to report any suspicious activity. This is a return to Canada for me, having previously served as Griffith University's Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Director, Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct in Australia. I invite you to join me on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1 at 9:00AM in the Multi-Purpose Room, 2nd Floor, UMSU University Centre when I will share my vision to increase research impact at the global scale through cross-disciplinary collaboration and a plurality of perspectives. A strong foundation already exists at UM, and I look forward to using that foundation as a springboard to the next level. UM condemns the tragic death of Mahsa Amini

Since this complex situation began to unfold in Iran, we have heard from many of you about how this is impacting you personally and academically. We have responded directly to student comments and concerns including sharing available resources and supports. The Provost's Office has also asked all Deans to ensure Instructors and Sessionals who are supervising or teaching a student impacted by the current situation in Iran exercise compassion during this challenging time. Mike Emslie, UM's Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller, and I will provide a detailed presentation and answer any questions you may have about the budget. Following the town hall, we will also be sending out a budget survey to garner additional community input. I began hosting budget town halls while I was provost at what is now Toronto Metropolitan University, and I sincerely look forward to holding my first such event as UM President now that we are back on campus in full capacity. UM to recognize national holiday on Sept. 19

The University of Manitoba will close on Sept. 19, 2022 to coincide with the national holiday recently announced by the federal government marking the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth reigned as monarch of The Commonwealth for 70 years, the longest of any British ruler. She passed away on Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96. All Canada and Manitoba flags on the Fort Garry campus are flying at half-mast<https://news.umanitoba.ca/flag-lowered-for-queen-elizabeth-ii/> until Sept. 19. Classes will be cancelled for the day and may be rescheduled on a case-by-case basis. For staff, the day will be a one-time statutory holiday. If you have questions, please reach out to your supervisor or instructor. UM buildings and services, including libraries, will also be closed on Sept. 19 and will reopen on Sept. 20. The announced federal holiday is for 2022 only and will not be an annual holiday.
