Join us on November 13 for a conversation on economic Reconcilitation] Dear Bisons, On November 13, UM is hosting a unique in-person event where big thinkers will explore ideas surrounding economic Reconciliation. What does it mean to build an economy that provides space for Indigenous prosperity and how can Manitoba, home to one of the largest populations of First Nations and Métis people, lead the way in shaping a more just and inclusive economic future? This special event is part of my podcast, "What's the Big Idea?<https://umanitoba.ca/community/whats-the-big-idea-podcast>", and for this episode, Dr. Angie Bruce, Vice-President (Indigenous), will take the host's chair. She will engage three bold alumni in a critical conversation about our economic future. The panelists are: Diane Roussin [BSW/96], a member of Skownan First Nation and an Anishinaabe leader who champions Indigenous-led solutions to large scale systems change for families and communities. She is the project director of Winnipeg Boldness, Canada's longest serving Indigenous Social Innovation Lab. Kathleen Bluesky [BA/99, MBA/15], a Cree and Anishinabe Ikwe from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation and Minegoziibe Anishinabe First Nation. She is the owner of Seven Feathers Consulting and has led transformative initiatives, including Aski Pumenikewin (Land Code) and the NCN Othasowewin (Constitution), played a pivotal role in securing Manitoba's inaugural Social Impact Bond in 2019, and continues to shape Indigenous development as CEO of the Treaty One Development Corporation. Peter Pomart [MBA/18, PhD/25], is a Lecturer at the I.H. Asper School of Business and the former Director of Indigenous Business Education Partners. His PhD dissertation, "Indigenous Voices on Self-Determination, FPIC, and Canada's Evolving Duty to Consult and Accommodate Framework: An Empirical Study," presents an Indigenous-centred perspective on UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) and its implications for resource development in Canada. This conversation will explore what economic Reconciliation means and looks like to participants and their organizations, and what we must collectively do to achieve it. After the formal podcast conversation, there will be a Q&A with the audience. These gatherings are more than commemorations—they are invitations to listen, learn, and act. Truth and Reconciliation is not a one-day reflection. It is a lifelong commitment. September 30 serves as a powerful reminder of the truths that must be acknowledged and the relationships that must be rebuilt. It is a moment to deepen our understanding of the histories and ongoing impacts of Residential Schools, and to honour the strength, leadership, and voices of Survivors. We all have a role to play. Whether through attending events, engaging in dialogue, or reflecting on our responsibilities, this is an opportunity to move forward together—with humility, respect, and purpose.
