Road construction Please be aware that there is ongoing construction on the Fort Garry campus and in the surrounding area: * Abinojii Mikanah – limited to one westbound lane leading up to Pembina Highway * Pembina Highway – lane closures leading to/from the intersection at University Crescent * University Cresent – lane closures from Thatcher Drive to Dysart Road Expect delays on route to the Fort Garry Campus and plan ahead. Allow for an additional 15 to 30 minutes on your commute. Winnipeg Transit changes The Winnipeg Transit route overhaul took place over the summer, and the Fall schedule changeover is planned for August 31. Important: New data storage limits being introduced for M365 Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint/Teams This message is sent on behalf of Terry Bunio, Acting Chief Information Officer, Information Services & Technology Microsoft has announced that it will no longer be offering "unlimited" storage as part of licensing agreements with its educational institution customers. As part of this decision, it is imposing new, institution-wide storage limits for data on M365 applications including OneDrive, SharePoint, MS Teams and email. This change affects all Microsoft 365 Education users globally. For more information on why Microsoft is making these changes to Microsoft 365 storage please visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/microsoft-365-storage-op… What you need to know As a result of this change<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/microsoft-365-storage-op…>, the University of Manitoba is setting new storage limits for students, faculty and staff to align with this new policy. This change will affect your ability to store and edit files in your One Drive account or SharePoint and may affect your ability to send emails if you are over the limit. New storage limits for students as of September 3, 2025 Email - 50 GB limit OneDrive - 25 GB limit SharePoint/Teams - 50 GB limit Microsoft OneDrive, Outlook and SharePoint will notify you within these applications when you are at 80% storage used or are over the limit. Should you exceed these limits, you will lose the ability to send email and/or your documents in OneDrive or SharePoint will be converted to Read Only until your storage is reduced. Take action now We are starting this initiative September 3, 2025. If you are over the new quota, you have up to six months to review and clean up your files and email to meet the new storage quota. If you're currently over the limit, you will get an extra 25 GB to help with cleanup. This extra space will be removed once you're back within quota. [Announcement-Header-1200px-2] Message from Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) August 27, 2025 Dear UM Students, In 2024, we launched MOMENTUM: Leading Change Together, UM Strategic Plan, 2024-2029 and Time for Action: UM’s Truth and Reconciliation Framework<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/um-truth-and-reconciliation-framework>. These plans, along with other key institutional plans, define where we want to go as a university. Today, we are sharing the MOMENTUM Implementation Plan<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2025-06/2025-06-momentum-implement…> which focuses on how we will get there and how we will track our progress along the way. The implementation plan was developed by a steering committee comprised of students, faculty, staff, and senior leaders. As implementation is an ongoing and iterative process, the committee will regularly review actions, gather feedback, and use evidence to guide next steps and to report back to the community. Central to this work is the ongoing collaboration with the Truth and Reconciliation Advisory Committee to ensure that the commitments of Time for Action are meaningfully embedded in our implementation efforts and in measuring our progress moving forward. Our success depends on reciprocal relationship-building, collaboration, and meaningful engagement—both within and across our institution and with community partners. AUGUST 2025 Final Exam Period approaching The August 2025 Final Exam period runs from August 11 - 15, 2025. Plan your arrival: Make sure you have a plan to get to campus early in case transport does not go as planned. Check out the classroom in which your exam is taking place in advance! 2. Supplies: Ensure you have the necessary writing utensils and some extras! Students must ensure that all items required for the examination are placed on top of the desk prior to the start of the examination. 4. Attendance & identification: Students must display their UM student ID card or government issued photo identification (such as a passport or driver's license) and are required to sign an attendance form. 5. Arriving late: * Students who arrive more than 30 minutes after the start of the examination will not be permitted to write the examination. * Students who arrive less than 30 minutes late, will be permitted to write the examination, but must stop writing at the end of the scheduled exam time. * Students are not permitted to enter the examination room after at least one other student who is writing the same examination has left the examination room. * If you are late and not permitted to write an examination, you will be asked to complete the appropriate form by an invigilator and will then be advised to contact the Office of your Dean or Director no later than the next business day to discuss possible alternatives. 1. Illness/ emergency during your exam: If you become ill during the course of an examination and are unable to continue, you must report at once to the Head Invigilator, hand in the examination, and indicate either that you wish to submit your examination paper as: (1) completed; or (2) not completed and with the intention to request a deferred examination. Medical or supporting documentation will likely be required for your deferral request. 2. Leaving the exam: * Students are not permitted to leave the examination room during the first thirty (30) minutes of an examination. * Students are not permitted to re-enter an examination room until all examination scripts have been collected. ________________________________ Unauthorized materials in exams Students are not permitted to access any unauthorized materials during an examination. This includes but is not limited to calculators, books, notes, pencil cases, or any electronic device capable of wireless communication and/or storing information. Survey Regarding the Summer Term Academic Schedule (Students)

This email is sent on behalf of the ad hoc committee reviewing the current summer term academic schedule. In 2021, the structure of the Summer Term Academic Schedule was revised to provide a more simplified model with two 6-week segments and one 12-week segment. Each segment is followed by one week without evaluation or instruction to facilitate course grading. Field trip and co-op courses are scheduled separately as appropriate. In November 2023, Senate approved a motion to review the Summer Term Academic Schedule. An ad hoc Committee to Review the Summer Term Academic Schedule was established in 2024 with the following members: Donna Martin (Associate Dean, Graduate Programs, Nursing) Greg Smith (Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs)) Jeff Adams (University Registrar and Executive Director, Enrolment Services) Gayle Gordon (Associate Registrar and Director of Systems) Philip Ferguson (Engineering) Jeremy Patzer (Arts) John Sorensen (Science) Rob Hoppa (Associate Dean, Research, Arts) Horace Luong (Associate Dean, Student Experience, Science) Taylor Friesen (Agricultural and Food Science) Rachhvir Dhaliwal, (UMSU Vice President University Affairs) Christopher Yendt (UMGSA President) The objectives of the review are to investigate any impacts of the Summer Term Academic Schedule structure on: * students' summer employment, * units' ability to hire instructors to teach Summer Term courses, and * academic staff members' ability to take vacation time in the summer. Additionally, the ad hoc committee will determine if the goals for restructuring the Summer Term Academic Schedule were met. The goals were: * provide an outstanding student experience, * create a schedule that enables students to learn course material in a comparable way to courses taught in the Fall and Winter terms, * allow for sufficient time in an examination period with few or no exam conflicts, * provide time for instructors to complete marking and for students to receive their grades prior to beginning their next courses. We are interested in learning about the perspectives of the current Summer Term Academic Schedule amongst all students. You are invited to complete a confidential survey about the current Summer Term Academic Schedule. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Survey results will be summarized and included in a report to Senate in 2025. This survey was approved by the UM Survey Review Committee. This annual occasion recognizes historical and ongoing injustices and prejudices fueled by racial discrimination. In Canada, Indigenous peoples, racially marginalized people, and marginalized religious communities face racism and discrimination regularly. Institutions such as universities are inextricably linked to Canada’s colonial legacy, with racial inequities manifested through policies, practices and culture. Literature relating to the assessment of high-quality teaching and courses design continues to expand, including adopting assessment approaches that support contextually relevant models of teaching assessment. Reflections by the Senate Committee on Instruction and Evaluation about SRI in the overall context of the UM Evaluation of Teaching Policy have provided an opportunity for a holistic review of current practices and needs regarding how high-quality teaching is defined and assessed at UM. The Review Committee is now seeking broad input from the University of Manitoba community to generate feedback about qualities of high-quality teaching and identify possible methods of teaching assessment. The university has met with UMFA twenty-nine times since the Summer term and continues to bargain in good faith, with the intention of concluding a collective agreement without a labour disruption. The university remains committed to a fair deal for UMFA and to ensuring an outstanding teaching and learning experience for students. The event and Q&A session following the lecture will be emceed by Dayna Spiring [BA/98; LLB/01]. She is the recipient of UM’s 2023 IGNITE award, the first woman to have her name engraved on the CFL’s Grey Cup, and the driving force behind many sporting events, including Winnipeg’s successful bid to host the 2025 Grey Cup. Sinclair is the former captain of Canada’s women’s soccer team and an iconic athlete who has led teams through five Olympics (winning gold and two bronze medals) and five World Cups. With an astonishing 190 goals in 300 international matches, she holds the record as the all-time leading scorer in international soccer history. The five-time Olympian is also an Officer of the Order of Canada, an ambassador for the MS Society of Canada, and an advocate for gender equality. In her lecture she will share her inspiring journey—detailing the teamwork, passion, and resilience that propelled her to the top of her sport. She’ll also talk about the barriers female athletes face and how we can collectively work to dismantle them to build a more inclusive future. I hope you have many opportunities to connect with the people and places that give you joy, and to engage in activities that calm your mind and fill you with inspiration. As you head into this well-deserved break, here are a few things to keep in mind: The university will be closed at 4:30 p.m. on December 20 and reopen on January 2, with Winter Term classes beginning on January 6, 2025.
