Fall 2025 Final Exam Period approaching The Fall 2025 Final Exam period runs from Dec. 9 - 20, 2025. Plan your arrival: Make sure you have a plan to get to campus early in case transport does not go as planned. Check out the classroom in which your exam is taking place in advance! 1. Attendance & identification: Students must display their UM student ID card or government issued photo identification (such as a passport or driver's license) and are required to sign an attendance form. 1. Arriving late: * Students who arrive more than 30 minutes after the start of the examination will not be permitted to write the examination. * Students who arrive less than 30 minutes late, will be permitted to write the examination, but must stop writing at the end of the scheduled exam time. * Students are not permitted to enter the examination room after at least one other student who is writing the same examination has left the examination room. * If you are late and not permitted to write an examination, you will be asked to complete the appropriate form by an invigilator and will then be advised to contact the Office of your Dean or Director no later than the next business day to discuss possible alternatives. 1. Illness/ emergency during your exam: If you become ill or receives word of a family emergency during the course of an examination and are unable to continue, you must report at once to the Head Invigilator, hand in the examination, and indicate either that you wish to submit your examination paper as: (1) completed; or (2) not completed and with the right to request a deferred examination. Medical or supporting documentation may be required for your deferral request. 1. Leaving the exam: * Students are not permitted to leave the examination room during the first thirty (30) minutes of an examination. * Students are not permitted to re-enter an examination room until all examination scripts have been collected. ________________________________ Unauthorized materials in exams Students are not permitted to access any unauthorized materials during an examination. What does it mean to build an economy that provides space for Indigenous prosperity and how can Manitoba, home to one of the largest populations of First Nations and Métis people, lead the way in shaping a more just and inclusive economic future? This special event is part of my podcast, "What's the Big Idea?<https://umanitoba.ca/community/whats-the-big-idea-podcast>", and for this episode, Dr. Angie Bruce, Vice-President (Indigenous), will take the host's chair. She will engage three bold alumni in a critical conversation about our economic future. The panelists are: Diane Roussin [BSW/96], a member of Skownan First Nation and an Anishinaabe leader who champions Indigenous-led solutions to large scale systems change for families and communities. She is the project director of Winnipeg Boldness, Canada's longest serving Indigenous Social Innovation Lab. Kathleen Bluesky [BA/99, MBA/15], a Cree and Anishinabe Ikwe from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation and Minegoziibe Anishinabe First Nation. She is the owner of Seven Feathers Consulting and has led transformative initiatives, including Aski Pumenikewin (Land Code) and the NCN Othasowewin (Constitution), played a pivotal role in securing Manitoba's inaugural Social Impact Bond in 2019, and continues to shape Indigenous development as CEO of the Treaty One Development Corporation. Peter Pomart [MBA/18, PhD/25], is a Lecturer at the I.H. Asper School of Business and the former Director of Indigenous Business Education Partners. His PhD dissertation, "Indigenous Voices on Self-Determination, FPIC, and Canada's Evolving Duty to Consult and Accommodate Framework: An Empirical Study," presents an Indigenous-centred perspective on UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) and its implications for resource development in Canada. This conversation will explore what economic Reconciliation means and looks like to participants and their organizations, and what we must collectively do to achieve it. These gatherings are more than commemorations—they are invitations to listen, learn, and act. Truth and Reconciliation is not a one-day reflection. It is a lifelong commitment. September 30 serves as a powerful reminder of the truths that must be acknowledged and the relationships that must be rebuilt. It is a moment to deepen our understanding of the histories and ongoing impacts of Residential Schools, and to honour the strength, leadership, and voices of Survivors. We all have a role to play. Whether through attending events, engaging in dialogue, or reflecting on our responsibilities, this is an opportunity to move forward together—with humility, respect, and purpose. Important information regarding new data storage limits Microsoft is introducing new storage limits for all M365 applications, including OneDrive, SharePoint, MS Teams, and Outlook email. To align with this change, the University of Manitoba is setting new quotas for students, staff and faculty effective September 3, 2025. For students your new quotas are: Email – 50 GB, OneDrive – 25 GB, and SharePoint/Teams – 50 GB. Students who are currently over quota will receive an additional 25 GB of temporary space to assist with clean-up, but this will be removed once storage is back within limits. Notifications will appear in M365 apps when you approach or exceed your quota, and IST will also reach out to support affected users. Road construction Please be aware that there is ongoing construction on the Fort Garry campus and in the surrounding area: * Abinojii Mikanah – limited to one westbound lane leading up to Pembina Highway * Pembina Highway – lane closures leading to/from the intersection at University Crescent * University Cresent – lane closures from Thatcher Drive to Dysart Road Expect delays on route to the Fort Garry Campus and plan ahead. Allow for an additional 15 to 30 minutes on your commute. Winnipeg Transit changes The Winnipeg Transit route overhaul took place over the summer, and the Fall schedule changeover is planned for August 31. Important: New data storage limits being introduced for M365 Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint/Teams This message is sent on behalf of Terry Bunio, Acting Chief Information Officer, Information Services & Technology Microsoft has announced that it will no longer be offering "unlimited" storage as part of licensing agreements with its educational institution customers. As part of this decision, it is imposing new, institution-wide storage limits for data on M365 applications including OneDrive, SharePoint, MS Teams and email. This change affects all Microsoft 365 Education users globally. For more information on why Microsoft is making these changes to Microsoft 365 storage please visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/microsoft-365-storage-op… What you need to know As a result of this change<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/microsoft-365-storage-op…>, the University of Manitoba is setting new storage limits for students, faculty and staff to align with this new policy. This change will affect your ability to store and edit files in your One Drive account or SharePoint and may affect your ability to send emails if you are over the limit. New storage limits for students as of September 3, 2025 Email - 50 GB limit OneDrive - 25 GB limit SharePoint/Teams - 50 GB limit Microsoft OneDrive, Outlook and SharePoint will notify you within these applications when you are at 80% storage used or are over the limit. Should you exceed these limits, you will lose the ability to send email and/or your documents in OneDrive or SharePoint will be converted to Read Only until your storage is reduced. Take action now We are starting this initiative September 3, 2025. If you are over the new quota, you have up to six months to review and clean up your files and email to meet the new storage quota. If you're currently over the limit, you will get an extra 25 GB to help with cleanup. This extra space will be removed once you're back within quota. These plans, along with other key institutional plans, define where we want to go as a university. Today, we are sharing the MOMENTUM Implementation Plan<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2025-06/2025-06-momentum-implement…> which focuses on how we will get there and how we will track our progress along the way. The implementation plan was developed by a steering committee comprised of students, faculty, staff, and senior leaders. As implementation is an ongoing and iterative process, the committee will regularly review actions, gather feedback, and use evidence to guide next steps and to report back to the community. Central to this work is the ongoing collaboration with the Truth and Reconciliation Advisory Committee to ensure that the commitments of Time for Action are meaningfully embedded in our implementation efforts and in measuring our progress moving forward. Arriving late: * Students who arrive more than 30 minutes after the start of the examination will not be permitted to write the examination. * Students who arrive less than 30 minutes late, will be permitted to write the examination, but must stop writing at the end of the scheduled exam time. * Students are not permitted to enter the examination room after at least one other student who is writing the same examination has left the examination room. * If you are late and not permitted to write an examination, you will be asked to complete the appropriate form by an invigilator and will then be advised to contact the Office of your Dean or Director no later than the next business day to discuss possible alternatives. 1. Illness/ emergency during your exam: If you become ill during the course of an examination and are unable to continue, you must report at once to the Head Invigilator, hand in the examination, and indicate either that you wish to submit your examination paper as: (1) completed; or (2) not completed and with the intention to request a deferred examination. Medical or supporting documentation will likely be required for your deferral request. 2. Leaving the exam: * Students are not permitted to leave the examination room during the first thirty (30) minutes of an examination. * Students are not permitted to re-enter an examination room until all examination scripts have been collected. ________________________________ Unauthorized materials in exams Students are not permitted to access any unauthorized materials during an examination. Survey Regarding the Summer Term Academic Schedule (Students)

This email is sent on behalf of the ad hoc committee reviewing the current summer term academic schedule. In 2021, the structure of the Summer Term Academic Schedule was revised to provide a more simplified model with two 6-week segments and one 12-week segment. Each segment is followed by one week without evaluation or instruction to facilitate course grading. Field trip and co-op courses are scheduled separately as appropriate. In November 2023, Senate approved a motion to review the Summer Term Academic Schedule. An ad hoc Committee to Review the Summer Term Academic Schedule was established in 2024 with the following members: Donna Martin (Associate Dean, Graduate Programs, Nursing) Greg Smith (Vice-Provost (Academic Planning and Programs)) Jeff Adams (University Registrar and Executive Director, Enrolment Services) Gayle Gordon (Associate Registrar and Director of Systems) Philip Ferguson (Engineering) Jeremy Patzer (Arts) John Sorensen (Science) Rob Hoppa (Associate Dean, Research, Arts) Horace Luong (Associate Dean, Student Experience, Science) Taylor Friesen (Agricultural and Food Science) Rachhvir Dhaliwal, (UMSU Vice President University Affairs) Christopher Yendt (UMGSA President) The objectives of the review are to investigate any impacts of the Summer Term Academic Schedule structure on: * students' summer employment, * units' ability to hire instructors to teach Summer Term courses, and * academic staff members' ability to take vacation time in the summer. Additionally, the ad hoc committee will determine if the goals for restructuring the Summer Term Academic Schedule were met. The goals were: * provide an outstanding student experience, * create a schedule that enables students to learn course material in a comparable way to courses taught in the Fall and Winter terms, * allow for sufficient time in an examination period with few or no exam conflicts, * provide time for instructors to complete marking and for students to receive their grades prior to beginning their next courses. We are interested in learning about the perspectives of the current Summer Term Academic Schedule amongst all students. You are invited to complete a confidential survey about the current Summer Term Academic Schedule. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Survey results will be summarized and included in a report to Senate in 2025. This survey was approved by the UM Survey Review Committee. UM’s commitment to anti-racism and our anti-racism learning framework

[University of Manitoba logo] March 21 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This annual occasion recognizes historical and ongoing injustices and prejudices fueled by racial discrimination. In Canada, Indigenous peoples, racially marginalized people, and marginalized religious communities face racism and discrimination regularly. Institutions such as universities are inextricably linked to Canada’s colonial legacy, with racial inequities manifested through policies, practices and culture. We underscore UM’s fundamental commitments to anti-racism and social justice, outlined in MomentUM: Leading Change Together, UM’s 2024-2029 strategic plan. This includes a call to work together to dismantle systemic racism, to advance Reconciliation for transformative change, and to foster a vibrant community for all. UM’s Anti-Racism Task Force, established in 2022, gathered voices from across our campuses, while building on decades of community anti-racist activism at UM. It recommended areas for immediate action focused on education, policies and processes, and aimed at eliminating all forms of racism across all areas and levels of the institution. “This work is not only important; it’s essential.” - President Michael Benarroch The learning journey on racism and anti-racism To advance these foundational commitments, UM is providing meaningful learning and engagement for students, staff, and faculty at various stages of their learning journeys about racism and anti-racism. The Anti-Racism Learning Framework is responsive and flexible. It seeks to increase visibility for the many learning opportunities on racism and anti-racism organised by units, groups, and individuals across UM campuses. It also highlights centrally-organised workshops, events, and series with a racial justice lens including the Public Classroom initiative, Indigenous Scholars Series, Indigenous Summer Institute, Fireside Chats, and Data Justice Series. Starting in April 2025, the framework will include shared foundational learning delivered through annual Anti-Racism Training, as mandated for all public employees by the Manitoba provincial government. Torchia, Vice-Provost (Learning, Analytics, and Academic Infrastructure) and Chair, Senate Committee on Instruction and Evaluation. ________________________________ Teaching and course evaluations at the University of Manitoba are currently provided by a singular end of term student reflections on instructors and courses (SRI) instrument. Literature relating to the assessment of high-quality teaching and courses design continues to expand, including adopting assessment approaches that support contextually relevant models of teaching assessment. Reflections by the Senate Committee on Instruction and Evaluation about SRI in the overall context of the UM Evaluation of Teaching Policy have provided an opportunity for a holistic review of current practices and needs regarding how high-quality teaching is defined and assessed at UM. The Review Committee is now seeking broad input from the University of Manitoba community to generate feedback about qualities of high-quality teaching and identify possible methods of teaching assessment. We are receiving some questions from students about the bargaining process currently underway with UMFA, the University of Manitoba’s Faculty Association, that I would like to address. The university has met with UMFA twenty-nine times since the Summer term and continues to bargain in good faith, with the intention of concluding a collective agreement without a labour disruption. The university remains committed to a fair deal for UMFA and to ensuring an outstanding teaching and learning experience for students. Please be assured that the university remains open, and all classes and activities are continuing as usual.
