The University of Manitoba Sustainability Strategy and You On behalf of the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee, we are very pleased to release a draft Sustainability Strategy for your consideration and comment. The release of this document marks a significant milestone in the university's efforts to improve sustainability and operate in a way that respects and supports our environment. In an effort to become a leader in this regard, the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee has developed a comprehensive strategy that sets out a number of goals and actions with respect to campus operations, planning and community engagement. Ideas and feedback received from the university community formed the foundation of this draft Sustainability Strategy and we greatly appreciate your continued support in this process. The Sustainability Committee and its working groups listened to your ideas and suggestions and integrated them into a draft strategy that reflects your priorities. The result is a plan of action that fosters a culture of sustainability at our institution and integrates sustainability planning and action into all of our functions. The draft strategy is the beginning of our institution's transformation into a more sustainable place in which to learn, work and play. We strongly encourage you to participate in the many upcoming consultation opportunities that the committee is coordinating as we finalize this draft. Participation in the final consultation phase is critical to developing a Sustainability Strategy that is relevant and meaningful. REMINDER: September 21 Fall Term Registration Revision Deadline

Dear UM students, The Registration Revision deadline for Fall 2011 is Wednesday, September 21. Courses that are offered in Fall 2011 and courses that span Fall 2011/Winter 2012 may not be added after this date. If you have registered for Fall 2011 courses or spanned courses in Fall 2011/Winter 2012 and you have decided not to attend, you must drop these courses by Wednesday September 21. You will be subject to all associated fees for courses in which you are registered after this date. Although you may Voluntary Withdraw from Fall Term courses until November 16 and spanned courses until March 16, you will not receive a refund of Fall Term fees if you drop the course(s) after September 21. Courses are dropped using Aurora Student. If you are currently on Hold, please contact your faculty for assistance in dropping a course(s). Fee Payment Fee accounts with outstanding balances after the September 7 fee payment deadline have been assessed late fees. A further $40 late fee will be applied to accounts outstanding after September 21. Students with outstanding fee balances will be placed on Hold and may be subject to de-registration from courses that begin in Winter Term. You will not be cancelled or de-registered from Fall Term courses and will be responsible for tuition and all associated fees. UMSU Health & Dental Plan Deadline to Opt-Out: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Steps. . Check your Aurora student fee account to ensure you were assessed the health and dental fees. . While the start of the new school year at the University of Manitoba always offers new hope and new opportunity, this fall will be especially memorable because of changes we are making to better serve a new generation of trailblazers, visionaries and innovators. The transformations bearing fruit this fall are part of a vision to revitalize the physical spaces where we live, work, study and play. In addition to bringing new excitement to our university, these changes are also contributing to the impressive vibrancy already being experienced in our city and province. One of the most visible signs of progress is the completion of the new Pembina Hall Residence, which will provide a student experience like no other. All 360 units at Pembina Hall are single rooms with an exterior glass wall providing plenty of natural light and excellent views of the Fort Garry campus to the north and the Red River to the south. Each room is complete with its own private bathroom and shower. Our School of Art will have a new home this fall when it moves into the stunning new 70,000 square foot ARTLab. It will serve as home for visual artists to learn and create and will be the new home to Gallery One One. It is designed by Vancouvers Patkau Architects, founded by University of Manitoba alumni John and Patricia Patkau. The ARTLab is a cornerstone of our plan to develop an innovative nurturing ground for visual and performing arts that takes advantage of the space made available when Taché Hall was closed as a student residence in the spring. The Taché Arts Complex will give the iconic building new life while preserving its historic façade. The space will be transformed into a new music complex, housing the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music, classroom space, and a 500-seat concert hall with an orchestra pit. When completed, it will be a hub of cultural activity that will enhance our universitys reputation for inspiring the creative spirit of our students. This fall marks the last season for our Bisons football team to play its home games in University Stadium. Next year, they will play in one of the best football stadiums anywhere a 33,000 seat facility that will offer one of the best game day experiences in North America. This facility will help recruit athletes and will be a great location where students, staff, alumni and other fans can cheer on the Bisons. Further improvements will come to the facilities our athletes, students, staff and the community use when construction begins on the New Active Living Centre. There will also be more positive innovations in the year ahead. We have recently created a new Office of Campus Planning to facilitate discussions about how to make best use of assets such as the former Southwood Golf Course. There will be some challenges along the way. I want to thank you all for your patience if and when construction projects require some short-term disruptions in traffic, pedestrian movement or temporary relocations of office or classroom space. However, the improvements in our campus spaces will more than make up for those challenges. We congratulate our innovative staff who have overseen the design and have executed the plans that are coming to fruition. We are also grateful for the visionary support of our provincial and federal partners and our generous benefactors. So as we begin the fall term, I am proud to welcome new students to our community of trailblazers, visionaries and innovators. I also want to wish everyone great success in the year ahead. This message is delivered by President David Barnard, University of Manitoba Last fall, a matter arose involving a University of Manitoba doctoral student which garnered a great deal of public attention. At the time, I committed to providing you with an update on this case when it was prudent to do so. A court ruling was issued on the matter yesterday which brings some closure to the case and allows me to comment further. A full version of the ruling can be found attached to my statement at www.umanitoba.ca. The matter revolved around a doctoral student, who cannot be named to protect their privacy, who was provided with an accommodation by the University of Manitoba to complete a degree based on consideration of a documented disability. Under the Manitoba Human Rights Code and according to the universitys own policies, the University of Manitoba was obligated to accommodate this proven, professionally-diagnosed disability and did so. A University of Manitoba professor, Dr. Gábor Lukács, who did not teach or advise this student and was not involved in the decision to accommodate their disability, disagreed with the accommodation and chose to take the matter to the Manitoba Court of Queens Bench where it was adjudicated over the last year. A ruling in the matter was released late yesterday. The question before the court was whether Dr. Lukács, given his lack of direct involvement with the student, had the legal standing to challenge the universitys decision to accommodate the students disability. In her ruling, Justice Deborah McCawley determined that Professor Lukács does not have such standing and does not have the legal right to challenge the universitys decision. I fail to see any direct, legitimate personal or private interest as defined by the authorities which would grant Dr. Lukács private interest standing, wrote Justice McCawley in her ruling. He did not teach the student in question, he was only laterally a member of the Committee, he himself does not hold a degree from the University of Manitoba nor does he represent in any official capacity anyone but himself. Neither has he demonstrated any damages other than unsubstantiated statements as to what he thinks will occur if he does not succeed in his mission. Justice McCawley also made it clear that the decision of how and when to confer academic degrees lies with universities, not courts of law. While I am pleased with the ruling, I want to reemphasize that the University of Manitoba encourages informed debate on issues related to academic policy, such as those in the case just heard. Where it is possible for us to improve our policies and improve transparency of our processes, we will do so. To this end, a committee has been established to review: · How to balance the Universitys legal obligation to offer reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities while protecting academic standards; · What types of accommodations may be offered, without compromising academic standards; · Who should decide on whether accommodations should be offered, and if so, what type; · What types of evidence of disability should the decision-maker require; · With whom is the decision-maker required to consult; · How to ensure timely decisions on accommodations are made, so that a students academic progress is not compromised; and, · How to protect the privacy of students while assessing a case and implementing accommodations. Discussion of these matters is ongoing and involves students, faculty, staff and experts in these fields. A final report is expected from this committee later this year. The University of Manitoba will use their recommendations to reinforce our commitment to being a responsive and responsible academic institution. This message is sent on behalf of Mrs. Jane Lastra, Director, Financial Aid and Awards. Dear Student: The 2011/12 University of Manitoba General Bursary application form is now available! Every year, the University of Manitoba offers a wide-range of bursaries to both new and continuing full and part-time students who are enrolled in school from September to April who have a demonstrated financial need and a minimum academic standing. Bursaries - student funding which does not need to be repaid - range in amounts from $100 to $1,000, with over $3 million awarded annually. Bursary awards are primarily based upon financial need (as opposed to scholarships which are primarily based upon your academics/marks). General bursary criteria: * International students in their first year of post-secondary study in Canada are not eligible to apply to the general bursary program. * All students must complete courses in both fall & winter terms to be eligible. * In most cases, students must register for and complete at least 60 percent of a full course-load per term (i.e., a minimum of 9 credit hours per term). Graduate students do not have to adhere to credit hour minimums but must be registered as full-time students with the Faculty of Graduates Studies. * As always, financial need must be clearly documented on the application. Students who will have 2011-2012 government student loans have an easier way of documenting financial need. Student aid recipients will be required to submit copies of their current "official" government loan assessment (not 'quick assessments') to support their declaration of financial need. * Students must meet minimum G.P.A requirements. Continuing students must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0. New students (from high school) must have a grade 12 average of 70% or higher. Results are finalized in mid-December of each year and money is applied to tuition fees for successful students. Please check your tuition account in Student Aurora in mid-December to find out if you have been awarded a bursary. The University of Manitoba is pleased to announce the establishment of a Copyright Office. Issues relating to copyright have become increasingly complex and are evolving rapidly. There have been, and will likely continue to be changes in the law, technology, and practice which impact the University as a major creator and user of copyrighted material. The University has established this new office to ensure that faculty, staff, and students have the supports they require to be successful in their teaching, research, and studies. The Copyright Office's mandate will include four major functions: . Providing educational programs and general advice on copyright issues. . Providing a centralized service for obtaining clearance for the use of copyrighted materials. . Monitoring the University's compliance with copyright rules, and encouraging appropriate practices. . ALERT: UM Phone Lines Down June 8th

Information Services & Technology would like to remind you of the maintenance to be performed on the telephone system on June 8th. This maintenance will impact all telephone services on both campuses. From approx. 10 P.M until 2 a.m., the phone services that will be impacted are: No 911 service from a university phone No 555 service No local calls No long distance calls No voicemail service No internal calls on campus Code blue stations will not work during this time. Panic alarms will have periodic outages between 10 P.M. until 4 A.M. Elevator Emergency phone service will be out from 10 P.M. until midnight IP Telephone sets will be unavailable until 3:00 a.m. IP telephones are usually connected to the faceplate with a blue patch cord. In the case of an emergency please call 911 from a CELLULAR phone. For non-emergency assistance please call University of Manitoba Security at 269-3363 from a CELLULAR phone.

Convocation is a celebration of the most important investment we make in our lives, the investment in education. I am extremely proud of all of our graduates and am confident their hard work and determination will be rewarded as they begin their careers or pursue graduate studies. I recognize that many contribute to the investment of education. The student, their families, their professors, the university community and the public at large all make contributions - some large, some small - that ultimately lead to graduation day. While the students are justifiably in the spotlight, convocation gives us the opportunity to gather as a community of learning and share that success. Convocation does not signal the end of a journey. In many ways, it is just the beginning. The graduates we celebrate with this ceremony will share their talents and skills with their community in ways which will enrich us all. I invite and strongly encourage them to play an active and permanent role in our university as they move from student to alumni. The University of Manitoba alumni family is critical to the success of the institution and of students who are yet to arrive here to study. They act as ambassadors, proving to prospective students, their families, and employers that the University of Manitoba plays a vital role in the successes of individuals and our community. I am constantly inspired by our University of Manitoba alumni and how they have used what they have learned on this campus to achieve personal success while making their communities, their provinces or states, their countries and the world a better place. Eight of our nine honorary graduates this year are University of Manitoba alumni who have achieved great personal success and have made great contributions to the university following graduation. They include: * Allan Ronald, a pioneer in the field of infectious disease research who helped establish the U of M's team of world-renowned infectious disease experts; * Claude Bernier, who has been recognized for his work as a distinguished researcher and trailblazer with respect to improving global wheat production; * Catherine "Kiki" Delaney, a philanthropist and Member of the Order of Canada. Ms Delaney was one of the first women to conquer the male-dominated Bay Street status quo before establishing her own successful investment council firm; * Stu Clark, a successful Calgary-based entrepreneur whose vision and generosity have been driving forces in helping make the I. H. Asper School of Business a world-class hub of entrepreneurial activity; * Gary and Janice Filmon, who have made contributions to this province that extend far beyond Mr. Filmon's tenure as Manitoba premier. As distinguished alumni of the U of M, the Filmons have consistently risen to the challenge of helping promote and advance the reputation of their alma mater; * Terry Sargeant, the former chair of the U of M Board of Governors and one-time MP. Mr. Sargent has been integral to trendsetting causes such as the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission as well as lending his support to the arts through his involvement on various local boards; and * Philip Lee, Manitoba's first Chinese-Canadian lieutenant-governor and, for more than three decades, a staunch supporter and defender of Chinese Canadians across the country. Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian doctor and fertility expert who was born and raised in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and has dedicated his life to the search for peace in the Middle East rounds out or list of inspiring honorary degree recipients. While the alumni we are celebrating are an impressive group, I am confident the class of 2011 will meet and exceed the success of the graduates that came before them in ways we cannot possibly imagine. They will serve as new ambassadors for our university as they make their mark in the world. They are the next generation of alumni and benefactors who will contribute to our university and our community. Security Alert: Water Bottle Contamination

The Winnipeg Police Service, University of Manitoba Security Services, University of Manitoba Environmental Health and Safety Office and the Public Health Inspector are investigating what appears to be an intentional contamination of an employee's personal water bottle with a noxious substance. The tampering of this water bottle took place on the Bannatyne Campus sometime between May 09, 2011 and May 10th, 2011. Employees are cautioned not to leave personal drink bottles, food or lunch boxes unattended and to report any occurrences of suspected tampering to University of Manitoba Security Services at 474-9312."

New On-Line Bursary Application Process!!

Effective August 2011, the University of Manitoba Financial Aid and Awards Office will be moving away from a paper-based bursary application to a fully integrated ON-LINE application process! (The 2010/11 application was available on-line but had to be printed off before completion while the new application can be completed and submitted on-line.) The new on-line application will become available in late August. Please check the Financial Aid <http://umanitoba.ca/student/fin_awards/> & Awards website throughout the summer for updates. <http://umanitoba.ca/student/fin_awards/> http://umanitoba.ca/student/fin_awards/ Basic bursary criteria: * All students must complete courses in both fall & winter terms to be eligible. * In most cases, students must register for and complete at least 60 percent of a full course-load per term (i.e., a minimum of 9 credit hours per term). Graduate students do not have to adhere to credit hour minimums but must be registered as full-time students with the Faculty of Graduates Studies. * As always, financial need must be clearly documented on the application. Students who will have 2011-2012 government student loans have an easier way of documenting financial need. Student aid recipients will likely be required to submit copies of their current "official" government loan assessment (not 'quick assessments') to support their declaration of financial need. * Students must meet minimum G.P.A requirements. Continuing students must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0. New students (from high school) must have a grade 12 average of 70% or higher. Then it's time to take charge of your finances! Your government student loan(s) may come from the federal government and or your provincial/territorial government. This means you could have more than one loan to pay back. The National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) will send your Consolidation Agreement by mail before you are required to start making payments. The Agreement sets the terms for the repayment of your Canada Student Loan; this is the federal portion of your loan. You'll have to make a number of decisions, including the type of interest rate and how long you'll take to repay your loan. Depending on your situation, you might also receive another Consolidation Agreement by mail for your provincial or territorial student loan. You don't have to make any payments on your student loan(s) for the first six months after you leave school; however, interest will be added to your Canada Student Loan during these six months. Campus Beautification Day May 26, 2011

CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION DAY will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2011. This is the 14th year of this highly successful event which is made possible by the great leadership of the Physical Plant staff. Staff, students, faculty and retirees are invited to participate on a voluntary basis to help beautify the campus. Each department is requested to designate a CONTACT PERSON who will be responsible for coordinating the volunteers from their department. The name, department, address and phone number of the contact person should be forwarded by Monday, April 25, 2011 to: Fort Garry Campus - campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca Bannatyne Campus - b_domaradzki(a)umanitoba.ca If you have any questions, please contact Lyle Morin at 474-6285 or email morinl(a)cc.umanitoba.ca. Jobs such as picking up paper, raking, sweeping, pulling weeds and planting flowers will be identified. Development and Advancement Services will be approaching garden centres for donations of flowers and plants. Physical Plant staff will be assigned to each zone to work with the contact people to coordinate the projects. A brown bag meeting of all contact people will be held in Room 204 University Centre (Marshall McLuhan), at noon on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 to finalize the arrangements. Refreshments will be provided. On Campus Beautification Day, a barbecue lunch sponsored by ARAMARK will be held at noon in the quadrangle on the Fort Garry Campus and in front of the Brodie Centre on the Bannatyne Campus for all volunteers. Pepsi will be providing the refreshments. The Bookstore as well as various other business on Campus will be donating "door" prizes for the event. This year the Grand Prize is two airline tickets donated by West Jet. Teams are encouraged to propose projects which will be judged and the best gardens will be awarded with first, second and third prizes. Last year many innovative ideas were presented so please submit your ideas to campbeau(a)cc.umanitoba.ca (Fort Garry Campus) or b_domaradzki(a)umanitoba.ca (Bannatyne Campus). Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, rakes and spades from home although some will be provided by Physical Plant. Physical Plant will be hiring additional grounds staff during the summer to maintain the work. The project will commence at 9:00 AM and continue throughout the day. Everyone is invited to participate for as much time as their schedules permit. In the event of rain, the rain date is Friday, May 27, 2011 so please keep that date open as well. Attempted theft - Banntyne Campus

At 7:45 this morning, a female HSC employee using the ATM located in the Atrium of the Brodie Centre, Bannatyne Campus, was approached by a male who attempted to take her money. University staff and Patrol Officer gave chase and male fled southbound past McDermot Avenue. No weapons involved. No injuries reported. WPS on scene and investigating. Male described as: approx 5' 2" slim build, 120 lbs 20-25 yrs darker skin tone drk hair and goatee wearing blue jeans carrying a blue jean "Dickies" backpack. Security Services reminds everyone to remain aware of your surroundings and call 474-9341 for emergency, criminal, and safety-related matters.

Reminder: Voluntary Withdrawal Deadline for Fall/Winter and Winter Term Courses is Friday, March 18, 2011 The deadline for Voluntary Withdrawal from Fall/Winter and Winter Term courses taught during the standard term is this Friday, March 18. VW's must be done through Aurora Student. Courses taught outside the standard term will have different VW deadlines. Note - if you are On Hold for outstanding tuition, library books, parking fines, etc. you will not be able to access the Registration function in Aurora to VW a course. If you are On Hold and plan to VW, you must either first clear your Hold so that you can access the Registration functions in Aurora, or you must contact your Faculty (University 1) advising office for assistance in dropping the course. Are you planning to take courses in Summer Session? Join the thousands of students who take advantage of Summer Session to lighten their load in fall & winter, finish their degree faster, enjoy smaller classes, or catch up on missed or failed courses. Here are some things to know if you are planning to register for Summer Session . Registration begins March 21, 2011. You will be assigned one day during the first week in which you can register. Log in and select Enrolment & Academic Records. Select Registration and then Registration Time & Status. For the first 5 days of registration (March 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25), spaces in most courses are released each day in equal numbers to ensure fair access for all students. For example, if a course has 50 spaces available, 10 spaces will be released each day. During these first 5 days of registration, the only day you may register is determined by the last two digits of your Student Number. You may register between 9:00 am and 12:00 midnight on your day of registration. . If you are planning to Repeat a course(s) you have previously completed, you must obtain permission from your faculty (University 1) advising office prior to registration. Your advisor can also check to ensure that a course Repeat is to your benefit depending on your academic goals. Do this in advance of your registration day to ensure that your registration is not delayed and you don't miss out on space. . If you are expecting to graduate in Spring 2011, you must re-apply for admission if you plan to continue taking courses in Summer Session. . Remember that you are financially and academically responsible for all courses in which you are registered after the Revision deadline. This Revision period is very short in Summer Session, so make sure you drop a course you will not be taking before it begins - or at the latest before the applicable Revision deadline. Failure to pay for your courses will not result in a de-registration of courses. Important Notice for Telephone Service on March 2

Information Services & Technology is required to perform maintenance on the telephone system on March 2nd. This maintenance will impact all telephone services on both campuses. From 9 P.M until 11 P.M. the phone services that will be impacted are: No 911 service from a university phone No 555 service No local calls No long distance calls No voicemail service No internal calls on campus Code blue stations will not work during this time. Panic alarms will have periodic outages between 9 P.M. until 3 A.M. Elevator Emergency phone service will be out from 9 P.M. until 11P.M. IP Telephone sets will be unavailable until 3:00 a.m. on March 3. IP telephones are usually connected to the faceplate with a blue patch cord. In the case of an emergency please call 911 from a CELLULAR phone. For non-emergency assistance please call University of Manitoba Security at 269-3363 from a CELLULAR phone Telephone services within the student residence rooms will not be impacted by this outage. Then it's time to take charge of your finances! Your government student loan(s) may come from the federal government and or your provincial/territorial government. This means you could have more than one loan to pay back. The National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC) will send your Consolidation Agreement by mail before you are required to start making payments. The Agreement sets the terms for the repayment of your Canada Student Loan; this is the federal portion of your loan. You'll have to make a number of decisions, including the type of interest rate and how long you'll take to repay your loan. Depending on your situation, you might also receive another Consolidation Agreement by mail for your provincial or territorial student loan. You don't have to make any payments on your student loan(s) for the first six months after you leave school; however, interest will be added to your Canada Student Loan during these six months. Strike Action by the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) at the University

The collective agreement in place between the University of Manitoba and the 533 CAW (Canadian Auto Workers( Local 3007 workers (representing caretakers, food service workers, groundskeepers, skilled trades and powerhouse workers) has expired. Despite regular bargaining sessions between the union and the university, an agreement has not yet been reached. The University of Manitoba continues to negotiate with the union and remains hopeful an agreement will still be achieved. The union has set a meeting for its membership for the evening of Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at which time its possible they may decide to take strike action immediately. Strike action could occur therefore as early as Wednesday, February 16. There may be traffic delays getting to the University due to picketing activity. The University will continue to operate as normal to the extent possible. Classes will continue as scheduled. The libraries will remain open. Picket Line Information Students have the right to choose whether or not they will cross the picket line. The University will make efforts to accommodate students to ensure they are not discriminated against as a result of their decision. However, students are responsible for materials covered in class. Students not wanting to cross the picket line should contact their instructors to discuss reasonable accommodation. All parties, including employees on strike and individuals crossing the picket lines, are responsible for refraining from illegal behavior. Please exercise patience and caution in crossing picket lines. Picket line activity will be videotaped and recorded for safety and security purposes and will be made available to Winnipeg Police Services, if necessary. If difficulties are experienced, please contact Security Services at 474-9312. Rogers and MTS Mobility cellular customers can also reach Security Services by dialing #555. Food Services In the event of a strike, food services will be reduced; however some locations will remain open as identified below. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch should a strike occur. · Campo Centre Café (limited menu) · Noodles & Soup · Tim Hortons Campo main floor · Fresh Food Company (closed during reading week as previously scheduled) Transit Winnipeg Transit will operate and have indicated they will cross the picket line. However, staff and students are encouraged to allow extra time to get to work and classes. The on-campus shuttle bus will also operate but may experience some delays. Special arrangements have been made to continue on-campus (Fort Garry) transportation for students with disabilities. Custodial Services Regular custodial services will not be available in the event of a strike. Arrangements have been made to ensure that washroom facilities will be maintained. Garbage bins will be placed on campus and they will be emptied on a regular basis. Cleaning of individual offices will not be provided. Staff and student support in caring for the campus is appreciated. Maps showing the location of the garbage bins will be posted across campus and on the University web site. Since June, the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee has been working on an action plan to develop the comprehensive Sustainability Strategy for the University that will set goals and actions with respect to campus operations, planning and community engagement. The action plan includes soliciting ideas and feedback from the University community. Problems with Aurora PINs

As indicated previously, all users of Aurora Self Service are required to set up new Security Questions and Answers on your next log in to Aurora. The PIN used prior to the upgrade is the same one as you used prior to the upgrade and if entered correctly will work. Several staff and students have reported problems with their Aurora PIN not working. Based on information from these users it is evident that some of the PINs being entered are more than six digits. What we have learned is that, although prior to the upgrade the PIN limitation was six digits, some users believed they had created PINs with more than six digits. If a user typed in more than six digits prior to the upgrade, the system only used the first six entered. So, a user may have thought they were entering an eight digit PIN, for example, when in fact the Aurora system only stored and used the first six digits. The post-upgrade PIN limit is now a combination of 10 digits and characters. So now if a user types in an eight digit PIN there will be a PIN mismatch as the PIN stored in the system was only six digits. If you thought your PIN was greater than six digits prior to the upgrade last weekend, please be sure to type in only the first six digits. After your first log in you can change the PIN to a combination of 6 to 10 digits and characters. If you choose to create a new PIN, please remember the PIN must include a least one number and if you choose to include letters that these are case sensitive. It is my great pleasure to announce that two University of Manitoba students have been named Rhodes Scholars for 2011. That two of three Prairie region Rhodes Scholars for 2011 are University of Manitoba students speaks volumes about the quality of students we attract to this institution; the high-calibre of faculty who teach and mentor them in research opportunities; and the abundance of support services in place at this university to help nurture and encourage students to be the best they can be. The Rhodes Scholarships do not focus exclusively on academic achievement. Applicants also are assessed on their dedication and commitment to the betterment of their community and the people who live there. These students consistently demonstrate excellence, not only in the classroom and laboratory, but on our campus and in our cities, towns and neighbourhoods. They are outstanding students and tremendous people. The University of Manitoba has produced a total of 95 Rhodes Scholars since the award was created in 1904. That's more than any other university in Western Canada and is, particularly given our relatively small population, something in which we should all take great pride. This year, we are honoured to celebrate two exemplary students. Melissa Bailey is in the process of completing a B.Sc.(Hons.) in genetics and microbiology. She has taken full advantage of the opportunities placed in her path during her studies at the University of Manitoba. She has conducted research in genetics and stem cell biology and has worked at both the National Microbiology Laboratory and at the Max Planck Institute of Microbiology in Germany. Outside of her academic pursuits, Ms. Bailey is an accomplished athlete in aerial dance. Her commitment to her community is evident in her work as a coordinator of the Let's Talk Science program in public schools and her development of dance programs for disadvantaged youth in Winnipeg. Ms. Bailey intends to use her scholarship to pursue her interest in stem cell research through a M.Sc. in Clinical Medicine. Jody Reimer is completing her B.A. (Hons.) in Mathematics and Religion. In addition to her academic excellence, Ms. Reimer is also active in language studies, hiking, cycling and community outreach. She has taught as an assistant at the university, as well as a volunteer in India with the Ten Thousand Villages program. She has studied in Finland as part of her degree program, and has been a dedicated leader in recreational programming. Ms. Reimer intends to use her scholarship to pursue an M.Sc. in Mathematics through research in the application of mathematics to problems in biology. Both of these exceptional students will now have the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford in England for two or three years, beginning in October, 2011. They take with them all they have learned and experienced here at the University of Manitoba. It makes me very proud to know that this institution, and the people who work here, have helped these two women attain this prestigious distinction. I also wish to congratulate Braden O'Neill, a recent graduate of the University of Alberta, who was the third Prairie region recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship for 2011. While I send my congratulations out to our two new Rhodes Scholars, I also wish to take this opportunity to offer my heart-felt thanks to the dedicated members of the President's Advisory Committee on Rhodes Scholarships who work diligently to identify prospective applicants, help mentor them through the application process and assist in preparing the applicants for the rigorous interview process. Indeed, my thanks go out to the entire university community. Each of you, in your way, help to support and nurture these leaders of tomorrow. Thank you for your commitment to this process. Congratulations again to our most recent Rhodes Scholars. Their accomplishments make me very proud to be a member of this university. David T. Aurora Student is back online - new security features in effect

To all UM students Following a successful system upgrade, Aurora Student Self Service is now available. As part of the upgraded system, you will see enhanced security features. These include enhanced PIN functionality that allows a PIN to be 6 to 10 digits plus characters. Your PIN must contain numbers and may contain letters. Note: your current PIN will continue to work - you are not required to set a new PIN. The other change you will see is that you are now required to set two Security Questions. You must choose questions from the list provided and may not create your own question. You will be required to select your new Security Questions and set your answers on your next log in to Aurora. To verify your identity or if you forget your PIN you may be required to answer one or both of these questions, either online or when talking to the Registrar's Office. * The answer to your security question must be a minimum of 2 characters. * Answers are not case sensitive. * It is recommended that you do not use punctuation in your answers. * Keep the answers simple and memorable. * Avoid using answers that friends and parents can guess.
