The event and Q&A session following the lecture will be emceed by Dayna Spiring [BA/98; LLB/01]. She is the recipient of UM’s 2023 IGNITE award, the first woman to have her name engraved on the CFL’s Grey Cup, and the driving force behind many sporting events, including Winnipeg’s successful bid to host the 2025 Grey Cup. Sinclair is the former captain of Canada’s women’s soccer team and an iconic athlete who has led teams through five Olympics (winning gold and two bronze medals) and five World Cups. With an astonishing 190 goals in 300 international matches, she holds the record as the all-time leading scorer in international soccer history. The five-time Olympian is also an Officer of the Order of Canada, an ambassador for the MS Society of Canada, and an advocate for gender equality. In her lecture she will share her inspiring journey—detailing the teamwork, passion, and resilience that propelled her to the top of her sport. She’ll also talk about the barriers female athletes face and how we can collectively work to dismantle them to build a more inclusive future. Update on Emergency Response and Safety Enhancements

Last month, we committed to review<https://news.umanitoba.ca/follow-up-on-campus-safety-incident/> our response to the November 19 report of an armed person on the Fort Garry campus. While the report was unsubstantiated, we remain committed to transparency and continuous improvement in our emergency response efforts. Such reviews take place after any serious incident as outlined in UM's Emergency Response Plan. The Emergency Response Team and UM leadership have now completed that review and created a plan to strengthen our response in three key areas: communication, education and infrastructure. Areas for Improvement: Communications: * Ensure information is shared in a timely manner on a range of channels. * Increase adoption of the UM Safe App<https://umanitoba.ca/security/#your-safety-on-campus> among students, staff, and faculty. This includes promoting the App in acceptance letters, onboarding and performance reviews. * Explore ways to expedite communication during emergencies, so that UM Safe App messages and emails reach our community as soon as they are sent. * Ensure coordination with Winnipeg Police Service when they are communicating about our campus. Education: * Expand training on the Emergency Response Plan and safety protocols, offering annual sessions to the entire UM community and tailored sessions for leaders, faculties and units. * Offer training sessions in partnership with the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) about how to support safety in the event of an active threat on campus. Infrastructure: * Continue to update the closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) across campuses, including hiring a security consultant to provide additional feedback to enhance the campus CCTVs. * Upgrade the loudspeaker system on the Fort Garry campus to ensure clearer communication. * Continue installation of additional Code Blue emergency poles for enhanced access to security services at both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. Looking Ahead We wanted to share this update with you now, as we close out 2024, and commit to additional updates in the New Year. Knowing that this can be a stressful time, I would like to share some information about resources and supports that you may find helpful over the next two weeks. As you prepare for your exams, I encourage you to access the Content and Study Skills tutors<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-learning/t…> at the Academic Learning Centre (ALC). They continue to hold one-to-one appointments throughout the exam period. Follow-Up on Campus Safety Incident

[University of Manitoba Banner with University of Manitoba logo] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba is committed to supporting the safety of our campus community, and we acknowledge the distress caused to some by yesterday's events. Please understand, that as this is an ongoing police investigation, we are limited in our ability to comment on the matter, however we can provide the following update. UM Security immediately responded to the incident reported early yesterday morning, working closely with Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) to assess and address appropriately. As with any report of a potential threat to campus safety, our first priority is to secure impacted areas. UM sent out information through multiple channels including the campus loudspeaker, UM's social media channels, umanitoba.ca, email, and UM Learn. Out of an abundance of caution and to support the WPS response efforts, UM made the decision to cancel in-person classes and exams on the Fort Garry Campus for the remainder of the day. We are aware of concerns that information was not shared quickly enough. As with any event of this nature, we will review the effectiveness and efficiency of our relevant protocols to ensure our processes align with our commitment to a safe and supportive environment. In their afternoon press conference on November 19, WPS reported that there were "no injuries" and said, "we don't have any information right now that would bring us to believe that someone was assaulted." We continue to take this matter seriously and are cooperating fully with authorities on this ongoing investigation. We recognize that incidents like these can cause stress and anxiety for some members of our community, especially in the context of recent events. Mauro Residence in which an unauthorized individual entered the building and assaulted a resident. This bold plan outlines our key areas of expertise for maximum impact by providing solutions to society’s most pressing challenges. The plan outlines seven themes that will guide UM research over the next five-year period: * Foundations * Social Justice and Human Rights * Research by, for, and with Indigenous Peoples * Water and Food Security * Health and Well-Being * Climate Action and Sustainability * Manitoba, Hudson Bay, Arctic and the World These interconnected themes will promote the overarching mission of transforming research culture, advancing understanding and creating positive societal impact. We have set ambitious goals to position UM researchers as leaders in new and critical areas, including being in the Top 200 in the world and the Top 10 in Canada in the Center for World University Rankings, in the top 251-300 in the Times Higher Education Rankings and in the top 100 in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. Informed by community consultations and MOMENTUM: Leading Change Together 2024-2029<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan>, this draft framework outlines the vision, mission and shared values, which has guided the Reconciliation Advisory Committee in its work. Before the Reconciliation Advisory Committee moves forward with presenting the final framework to Senate and the Board of Governors for approval, we invite you to read and share your feedback on this important document. This framework will guide our shared work over the next five years. We want to ensure that it resonates and that the diversity of voices and perspectives that strengthen our UM community are reflected in the framework. Please check your schedule for classes that start and end on other dates. ________________________________ Course Adds and Drops (Revision Period) The registration revision period is considered the 'add and drop' period, where you can make changes to your course or timetable without academic or financial penalty. Courses dropped during this period are not recorded on official transcripts or student records, and tuition charges will be reversed for dropped courses. During the registration revision period, you can: * Add a new class if you changed your mind about your course subjects, or if a course that was previously full is now available. * Register in a course for which you were waitlisted if you receive notification that space is available. * Update your residency status in your Aurora account and receive a fee adjustment. * Once the registration revision period ends, you can still Voluntarily Withdraw from a class; however, it will be recorded on your transcript, and you will not receive a tuition refund. Student Affairs and Security Services both immediately reached out to SJP to discuss the expectation that the event remain peaceful. Since the start of the protest on Tuesday morning, Security Services has been on site to monitor the situation and ensure a safe environment. Although SJP publicly communicated their intention to remove the encampment as planned, tents remained last night, and a protest continues today. There are now also plans for outside groups to protest at the Fort Garry campus on Saturday, which has resulted in the very unfortunate cancellation of Science Rendezvous. New Task Force will update UM’s Mental Health and Well-being Strategy

Message from Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and Naomi Andrew, Vice-President (Administration) [cid:image001.jpg@01DA970F.6BB7EB50] New Task Force will update UM’s Mental Health and Well-being Strategy Dear students, The University of Manitoba is committed to providing a caring, supportive, responsive and safe environment for all members of our campus community. To advance this commitment, we will develop a new institutional mental health and well-being strategy. A Task Force on Mental Health and Well-being has been formed, led by co-chairs Tracey Peter, Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs), Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students), and René Ouellette, Associate Vice-President (Human Resources). The task force will investigate the current mental health supports available across each of our campuses, consider promising practices, review data collected from recent surveys and engage in consultations with our campus community to ultimately formulate recommendations for consideration. The task force intends to hold its first meeting in April, and in the coming months will announce the formation of several working groups. Please watch for future communications regarding opportunities to serve on a working group and also how to contribute through the consultation process. The task force aims to present initial findings in the fall of this year, and a final report and recommendations by Summer 2025. Protecting our digital campus is a shared responsibility, and we must all contribute to safeguarding our information and systems. Here are key habits to enhance our cybersecurity posture: 1. Use strong passwords: Create complex passwords on all your accounts, and consider using a password manager to store your passwords securely. 2. Enable Multi-factor authentication (MFA): The university requires everyone to use multi-factor authentication (MFA) to sign in to university services and applications. Be cautious about unexpected prompts, and never share your one-time MFA code with others. Whenever possible, enable MFA on your personal accounts to add an extra layer of security. 3. Be cautious with email: Look for the UM external warning tag. It is a sure indicator that if the message sounds suspicious, it probably is. Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or suspicious sources, and always verify urgent requests. Phishing attempts are a common entry point for cyber threats. 4. Keep software updated: Regularly update your operating system, applications, and anti-virus software to protect against the latest vulnerabilities. 5. Message from Lynette Magnus, Chair, University of Manitoba Board of Governors [cid:image001.jpg@01DA7A07.9519B2A0] I am very pleased to share that the Board of Governors unanimously approved the re-appointment of President and Vice-Chancellor Michael Benarroch to a second five-year term, beginning July 1, 2025. The re-appointment of Dr. Benarroch follows the completion of a comprehensive review by the Board's Presidential Review Committee. The Committee, representing students, staff, faculty, and independent Board members, sought and received widespread feedback from members of the UM and broader communities. The Committee looked ahead at the opportunities and challenges facing the University and heard from President Benarroch on his vision for the University of Manitoba into the future. The Board has full confidence in President Benarroch's ability to lead our university in alignment with its new five-year strategic plan and in support of a university that will lead change for a better Manitoba. President Benarroch has shown exceptional leadership throughout his first term. He successfully guided the University during the pandemic, always focused on ensuring the continuation of student learning, while maintaining safety for all. He has built an outstanding and cohesive leadership team and has placed a renewed focus on research and innovation, enabling greater success of UM faculty, staff, and students. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello, Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between March - May 2024 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. [cid:image002.jpg@01D531AE.174C13F0] Dear students, On Monday, February 26 a student-led event was held on campus during which interactions and views expressed by the featured speaker were in direct opposition to the values upheld by the University of Manitoba. UM denounces Islamophobia and all forms of discrimination, harassment and prejudice against individuals or groups based on their race, nationality, ethnicity or religion as supported by our Respectful Work and Learning Environment<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/respectful-work-and-learning-environment-poli….> (RWLE) policy and the safety of students is of utmost priority. We met with UMSU and will respect UMSU's decision to ban Mr. Bassem Eid from UMSU spaces. The University is committed to ensuring that students feel heard and valued and actively engage with those who express concerns or complaints, working with them to address issues. As a result, I am meeting with individual students and student groups involved in and directly impacted by this event and these conversations are ongoing. As an academic institution, UM believes in the power of education, dialogue, and the sharing of diverse perspectives. It is essential that this occurs in a manner that is respectful, and grounded in a mutual commitment to the dignity, safety and well-being of others.
