At 8 p.m., they’ll tip off against the twelfth-ranked University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. The winner gets one step closer to earning the championship banner for their school in the semi-final games on Saturday, February 24. [Image] This message is sent on behalf of The Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) Re: VPRI Undergraduate Research Award (URA) Opportunities Dear University of Manitoba Undergraduate Students: Wondering what to do in the summer of 2024? Why not experience research with a professor at your own university! Professors at the University of Manitoba, through their work, are contributing to the cultural, economic, health, and social well-being of citizens of Manitoba, Canada, and the world. By tackling challenging and complex issues and topics, they strive to make our lives better and more meaningful, bringing insight to all. UM Professors collectively draw in nearly $220 million from external sources to the University, on a competitive basis, to support their research, scholarly work, and creative activities, and to nurture young minds to become trailblazers, pioneers, and innovators. About the Undergraduate Research Award The award provides the opportunity for you to be mentored by a professor of your choice for 16 weeks (between May–August 2024) and gain valuable experience in your field of interest. Recipients also receive a $7000 award. Of the many awards available, at least 10% of these awards will be made available to students who self-declare as Canadian Indigenous Students on the application form. Furthermore, there will also be a minimum of two awards made available to students working on community-based research projects that are within disciplines supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). To be considered eligible for this opportunity, applicants must confirm with their University of Manitoba professor that the research is community-based research within disciplines supported by SSHRC and indicate this by checking the appropriate box on the application form. Who is eligible? * Must be an undergraduate student at UM. * Must be enrolled in 24 credit hours at the time of the Voluntary Withdrawal deadline (Fall term 2023 and Winter term 2024) * Minimum GPA of 3.0, based on all credits completed at the time of application. * Cannot be held in conjunction with other competitive summer research awards such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Undergraduate Research Summer Award (NSERC USRA) * Students who will be graduating in the Spring of 2024 (May/June convocation) are not eligible for this award. * This award cannot be held more than twice by any recipient during their undergraduate program(s) at UM. * Students who hold a master’s degree are not eligible for this award. President Benarroch has indicated his interest in reappointment, and, pursuant to his agreement with the University, requested that the Board of Governors review his performance as President with a view to reappointment for a further term. In accordance with its governance practices, the Board of Governors has established a Presidential Review Committee. This Committee will review President Benarroch's performance and his vision for a further term, reporting to the Board of Governors with a recommendation on the reappointment of the President by March 19, 2024. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. I am sharing the news with you that as of Monday, December 11, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 (ATU), the designated representative for transit workers in the City of Winnipeg, will be on strike, meaning city transit buses will not be operating until further notice. We recognize the potential impact this strike may have on your daily commute, however, please note that university operations, including the Fall Term exam schedule, will continue as planned. We want to assure you that we are committed to supporting you during this challenging time. To facilitate communication and provide answers to anticipated questions, a dedicated website, umanitoba.ca/transit, has been launched to keep the UM community informed and prepared. This platform offers answers to questions related to planning for travel, parking, alternative transportation options and more. To help alleviate some of the financial burden should you choose to drive to campus during the exam period (Dec. 12 to 22), UM Parking Services has updated rates as per below: Fort Garry campus: * Parking lots U and Q * Payment through the Honk Mobile app<https://news.umanitoba.ca/honk-if-you-love-mobile-parking-payment-solutions/> * Use Zone 91430 for U Lot * Use Zone 91400 for Q Lot. * Alternatively, students can pay in these lots without a Honk account by scanning the Honk Express Checkout QR code located on signage in U and Q casual sections near the parking meters. * The cost to park is $2.50 per hour. * Other larger casual parking areas available Monday December 11 are: * Parking lot L - $2.50 per hour. * University Parkade - $4.50 per hour * SD Lot (located at the Soccer Complex which is on the Campus Shuttle route) - $2 per 2 hours. Angie Bruce appointed UM’s new Vice-President (Indigenous)

[cid:image001.png@01DA284E.BF630A30] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor I am pleased to announce the appointment of Angie Bruce as the new Vice-President (Indigenous) of the University of Manitoba. Ms. Bruce will join UM to begin her term on February 1, 2024. At that time, we will officially welcome her to the UM community and look forward to supporting her as she continues to advance the priorities of the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous). An impactful and collaborative leader, Ms. Bruce brings experience and success working with First Nations, Inuit and Métis people and Nations, communities, local, regional and federal governments and organizations, and across the non-Indigenous public, private and non-profit sectors. Currently, Ms. Bruce is the Assistant Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Canada's Nòkwewashk – the first Government of Canada departmental team to be gifted its name by Indigenous Elders. In her capacity, Ms. Bruce grew the Indigenous Natural Resource Program to $100 million and supported the first natural resources international missions that highlighted Indigenous-led partnerships and business around the world. Ms. Bruce also led the development of an Indigenous Research Ethics policy for the department, changing the way scientists engage and partner with Indigenous Nations across Canada. Prior to her role at Natural Resources Canada, Ms. Bruce was Manitoba's Indigenous and Northern Relations and Municipal Relations Deputy Minister, where she led the highest number of Treaty Land Entitlement land transfers in the province’s history. She has also held senior positions with the Legacy of Hope Foundation and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, organizations that worked to support the education and awareness of Residential Schools and the healing of Survivors. Ms. Bruce brings significant experience in Indigenous research as a leader on projects for the Government of Canada, Government of Manitoba, City of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the Manitoba Métis Federation, with a focus on Indigenous-led processes and program delivery. Ms. Bruce is a proud Red River Métis woman tied to her home community of St. Laurent, Manitoba. Ms. Bruce grew up in the Métis culture and credits the strong maternal figures in her family for instilling a connection to the land, community, culture and spirit. Ms. Bruce is a UM alum and holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Asper School of Business. She is currently a PhD Candidate at Nipissing University. I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Catherine Cook for her visionary leadership. As the first-ever Vice-President (Indigenous), Dr. Cook has been a collaborative, patient, yet assertive, leader and a strong mentor for Indigenous women working to change colonial structures. During her term, she oversaw the Indigenous Senior Leadership projects, six initiatives<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/vice-president-indigenous/engaging-community-…> created to advance Indigenous engagement, success and governance at UM and to build a culturally safe environment for Indigenous students, staff, faculty and guests. I am thankful she has extended her term until the end of January 2024. Important information on potential transit disruptions

The City of Winnipeg is currently negotiating a new agreement with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505 ("ATU"), the union representing transit workers. UM has been informed The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), the union representing most Transit staff, is in a legal strike position and has advised that their members will not work overtime, which will mean disruption to services. Sent on behalf of the Dismantling Ableism and Promoting Equity for Persons with Disabilities Research Team: Greetings University of Manitoba Students, We are pleased to invite you to participate in the Dismantling Ableism: Institutional Action and Accountability online survey. We know that ableist barriers continue to exist at UM and have heard from previous surveys that it is time for action. The purpose of this survey is to ask disabled UM students, staff, and faculty and those managing chronic health conditions, including mental health conditions, what needs to change and how it needs to change to inform that action. The data from this survey will be used to create a series of anti-ableism recommendations and to inform the development of an anti-ableism policy for the University of Manitoba. This survey is one part of the Dismantling Ableism: Institutional Action and Accountability project. The project is designed to answer the following questions: What is equity when disabled persons and anti-ableism are centered? And what are the complex ways in which ableism operates across the University of Manitoba community and larger research ecosystem? The project is managed by Cade Kuehl (Project Coordinator and Research Assistant); and anchored by Dr. Diane Driedger (Disability Studies), and Dr. Reg Urbanowski (Rehabilitation Sciences) with Dr. Tina Chen (Vice Provost, Equity) serving as the administrative Principal Investigator. The study is funded by the Canada Research Chairs Program’s Robbins Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity. Your Participation The time it will take to complete this survey will be different for each person. We ask short questions that require you to click one or more response options; and we also ask open-ended questions where you can write as much as you would like (and whatever you would like). If you choose to fill in the optional open-ended text boxes, it may take longer to finish the questionnaire. You may exit the survey simply by closing the browser window. If you close your browser window and have not completed the survey, you may return to finish the survey up to two weeks later, as long as you use the same computer and Internet browser. Confidentiality This survey is confidential. At the end of the survey, we will give you the opportunity to provide your email address to receive a copy of the summary results report. If you choose to provide your email address for this purpose, it will be collected separately from your survey responses to ensure there is no link between your email and your answers. To ensure confidentiality, no potentially identifying information you provide will be reported. Your responses will not be shared with others, unless in report/aggregate format (with all the protections of confidentiality as required by the University of Manitoba Research Ethics Board). For example, there would need to be at least 5 other participants with the same characteristic(s) before we would report any information to guard against you being identified. Depending on the combination of characteristics, this minimum number may also be raised to further protect against indirect identification. We also recognize that some of you may have responsibilities as parents or guardians, which can sometimes pose its own unique set of challenges. As we continue to work towards a thriving University community, I am delighted to announce the creation of a digital babysitter directory, a joint venture between UM Family Resources and the Family Centre (Rady Faculty of Health Sciences), available to you starting Wednesday, November 01. The UM Babysitter Directory is a digital platform designed exclusively with the University community in mind and its goal is to connect parents seeking babysitting services with fellow students seeking casual employment. At the University of Manitoba, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and safe environment for all members of our community where discrimination, harassment, and prejudice against individuals or groups based on their nationality, ethnicity, or religion will not be tolerated. With respect to the comments released by the university on October 13<https://news.umanitoba.ca/reminder-to-recognize-our-common-humanity-in-the-…>, the intention was two-fold: to condemn the terrorist attack by Hamas and to support Jewish members of our community who were concerned for their safety following calls by Hamas for additional terror attacks; and to acknowledge that all Palestinian people are not represented by Hamas and are suffering because of the ongoing conflict. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between September - November 2023 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. [cid:image001.png@01D9DFE1.1600B100] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Tansi, I hope you enjoyed our beautiful province these past few months. This summer, it felt as though wherever Kim and I went, we found ourselves surrounded by Bisons! We went to a jazz concert of Joni Mitchell covers and learned lead vocalist, Amber Epp, and some of her band members were UM grads. We fell in love with a piece of art and, as we were purchasing it, learned the artist, Jordan Miller, was a UM alum. Everywhere we went, we felt connected to this community, and we loved it. Our university boasts an amazing array of talent and when we come together, incredible things happen. We've been connecting recently to create important guiding documents, such as the university's new Strategic Plan<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan>, the Strategic Research Plan (coming in 2024), and the new Reconciliation Action Plan. We're not done yet and welcome your big ideas over the coming weeks as these documents continue to take shape. And once again, I'm hosting a Budget Town Hall on September 26 and I hope to see you there and hear your thoughts on this foundational document. Our campuses are full of a diversity of people working together to make our city, province, and world better. There's no other place like UM in the province and I am honoured to advocate on behalf of this community every opportunity I get. After the October provincial election, I will resume meetings with government to continue discussions on a variety of important topics that can help make our province better, like the value of research, investing in post-secondary education and respecting institutional autonomy, health care education, and Reconciliation. I am also looking forward to boasting about our community's exceptional work to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce on October 20, highlighting the unique connections we have to our province's health and prosperity. Emergency Services personnel will be leaving campus and all buildings, outdoor spaces, and roads that had been closed will reopen shortly. The University of Manitoba would like to thank City of Winnipeg Emergency Services for their expert support ensuring the safety of our Fort Garry campus and university community. Notification of controlled detonation on Fort Garry campus

[cid:image001.png@01D9AB41.62C08B70] Notification of controlled detonation on Fort Garry campus Out of an abundance of caution, City of Winnipeg Emergency Services have decided to proceed with a controlled detonation to address the presence of a potentially unstable chemical found in Parker Building this morning. The controlled detonation will take place after 4:00 PM at an outdoor location, secured by Emergency Services and university personnel. There will be no impact on air quality. It is difficult to predict how loud this event will be for those on campus, but it is expected to sound similar to a loud firework. A safe perimeter has been established, and everyone is asked to respect the boundaries in place. If you are experiencing unease as a result of today's events, please speak with your supervisor about working remotely for the remainder of the day. Supervisors are encouraged to be flexible and support remote work in light of these events. Regular use of Parker and other affected buildings will resume following cleanup, which is expected to be complete later this afternoon. The disposal is being carried out in the safest possible manner in partnership with Emergency Services. The university will review all chemical storage protocols following this discovery and ensure we have every necessary practice in place to support the safe storage of all substances.

Emergency Services have been notified to assess the situation and are being deployed to campus. Parker and connected buildings are being evacuated to allow Emergency Services including Fire, Police, Ambulance and Hazardous Materials to attend and assess the situation and to determine the safest method of removing the chemical. The evacuation is a precautionary measure taken to safeguard the health and safety of our faculty, staff, and students. Once the substance is removed, it will be safe to resume use of Parker and connected buildings. We understand the concerns and anxieties that may arise from the evacuation and presence of emergency responders. Please be assured that our utmost priority is maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the University of Manitoba community. Now, just this week, your peers at the University of Waterloo have experienced a heinous act of violence on their campus. We offer them our deepest sympathies and reassurance that we are united in solidarity against hate. Universities should be spaces dedicated to the peaceful pursuit of knowledge and the well-being of others. This tragic incident reminds us of the importance of upholding the values we hold dear and reinforces our unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all members of our diverse community. At the University of Manitoba, we firmly believe in the power of equity, respect, and human dignity for all.
