Invitation to Participate in a Research Study: Cross-Canada Release of the Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI) 2023-2024

Dear Student, You are invited to participate in a national research study to evaluate post-secondary student stress. The Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI) was designed to help post-secondary institutions across Canada improve the tailoring of their campus mental health supports in line with the sources of student stress. This year, the PSSI survey is taking place at over 20 universities and colleges across the country! We are looking for student volunteers to complete an online survey at two timepoints over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year: one survey this month (September) and one in March 2024. The survey should take you about 20 mins to complete. If you are interested in participating, please read the attached Letter of Information thoroughly prior to completing the survey. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between September - November 2023 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. We would like to assure you that this research has been approved by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry campus, and all data will be kept confidential by the research team. [cid:image001.png@01D9DFE1.1600B100] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Tansi, I hope you enjoyed our beautiful province these past few months. This summer, it felt as though wherever Kim and I went, we found ourselves surrounded by Bisons! We went to a jazz concert of Joni Mitchell covers and learned lead vocalist, Amber Epp, and some of her band members were UM grads. We fell in love with a piece of art and, as we were purchasing it, learned the artist, Jordan Miller, was a UM alum. Everywhere we went, we felt connected to this community, and we loved it. Our university boasts an amazing array of talent and when we come together, incredible things happen. We've been connecting recently to create important guiding documents, such as the university's new Strategic Plan<https://umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan>, the Strategic Research Plan (coming in 2024), and the new Reconciliation Action Plan. We're not done yet and welcome your big ideas over the coming weeks as these documents continue to take shape. And once again, I'm hosting a Budget Town Hall on September 26 and I hope to see you there and hear your thoughts on this foundational document. Our campuses are full of a diversity of people working together to make our city, province, and world better. There's no other place like UM in the province and I am honoured to advocate on behalf of this community every opportunity I get. After the October provincial election, I will resume meetings with government to continue discussions on a variety of important topics that can help make our province better, like the value of research, investing in post-secondary education and respecting institutional autonomy, health care education, and Reconciliation. I am also looking forward to boasting about our community's exceptional work to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce on October 20, highlighting the unique connections we have to our province's health and prosperity. And of course, this term the Bisons return to the pitches, fields, courts, pools, and arenas. Survey participants needed for research on food and nutrition security at the University of Manitoba

Hello! Faculty in the Food and Human Nutritional Sciences Department are conducting a research study to learn more about food and nutrition security among students at the University of Manitoba (UM). We are seeking current UM students with at least part-time status, who are at least 18 years old, and who currently live in Winnipeg to take our survey. You must also be able to read and write English. Your participation in this study will consist of one approximately 20-30 minute survey. Questions may include basic demographic information as well as information regarding household nutrition security, household resilience, food availability and utilization, among other topics. All survey respondents completing the survey between June - August 2023 will be eligible to receive one of 8 $100 Amazon electronic gift cards in appreciation for participating. You may only complete the survey once. If you have previously completed this survey, you will be ineligible to participate. Emergency Services personnel will be leaving campus and all buildings, outdoor spaces, and roads that had been closed will reopen shortly. The University of Manitoba would like to thank City of Winnipeg Emergency Services for their expert support ensuring the safety of our Fort Garry campus and university community. Notification of controlled detonation on Fort Garry campus

[cid:image001.png@01D9AB41.62C08B70] Notification of controlled detonation on Fort Garry campus Out of an abundance of caution, City of Winnipeg Emergency Services have decided to proceed with a controlled detonation to address the presence of a potentially unstable chemical found in Parker Building this morning. The controlled detonation will take place after 4:00 PM at an outdoor location, secured by Emergency Services and university personnel. There will be no impact on air quality. It is difficult to predict how loud this event will be for those on campus, but it is expected to sound similar to a loud firework. A safe perimeter has been established, and everyone is asked to respect the boundaries in place. If you are experiencing unease as a result of today's events, please speak with your supervisor about working remotely for the remainder of the day. Supervisors are encouraged to be flexible and support remote work in light of these events. Regular use of Parker and other affected buildings will resume following cleanup, which is expected to be complete later this afternoon. The disposal is being carried out in the safest possible manner in partnership with Emergency Services. The university will review all chemical storage protocols following this discovery and ensure we have every necessary practice in place to support the safe storage of all substances.

[cid:image001.png@01D9AB41.62C08B70] Notification of chemical safety precaution This morning the Environmental Health & Safety Office received notification from the Faculty of Science that a small amount of chemical in a potentially unstable form was discovered in a storage room. Emergency Services have been notified to assess the situation and are being deployed to campus. Parker and connected buildings are being evacuated to allow Emergency Services including Fire, Police, Ambulance and Hazardous Materials to attend and assess the situation and to determine the safest method of removing the chemical. The evacuation is a precautionary measure taken to safeguard the health and safety of our faculty, staff, and students. Once the substance is removed, it will be safe to resume use of Parker and connected buildings. We understand the concerns and anxieties that may arise from the evacuation and presence of emergency responders. Please be assured that our utmost priority is maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the University of Manitoba community. We will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

The report explains the key themes, priorities, and challenges that emerged from the consultations throughout February and March. The document not only highlights what we have learned so far, but also starts to identify some ways in which our new strategic plan may move things forward. Search for a Vice-President (Indigenous): A message from President Michael Benarroch

[cid:image001.png@01D97F45.2E4AB820] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Catherine Cook has served the University of Manitoba as its inaugural Vice-President (Indigenous) since January 1, 2020 and in 2022, agreed to a one-year extension of her term. At that time, she signaled her intention to step down from this role and retire from the University at the conclusion of her term extension. Dr. Cook will conclude her time as Vice-President (Indigenous) later in 2023, in conjunction with the end of the search for the next Vice-President (Indigenous). Dr. Cook's contributions as Vice-President (Indigenous) have been exceptional and far-reaching. She conceptualized a portfolio that offers both strategic leadership of and support to the University's overall Indigenous engagement and achievement, Reconciliation and anti-racism efforts, including to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. She successfully led a university-wide process to implement the recommendations of the Indigenous Senior Leadership Report, directly engaging over 60 members of the university community through six project teams to implement 31 priorities or commitments. Further, under her leadership, UM successfully advocated for an $85M federal investment in a permanent home for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation; developed a Reconciliation Action Plan for the University; secured a $16.1M gift from the Mastercard Foundation for EleV programs that support Indigenous student success in a range of innovative ways, designed in partnership with Indigenous communities, governments and organizations; pursued a consultative approach to assessing how UM supports the declaration of Indigenous identity; and co-chaired the Anti-Racism Task Force. These accomplishments are among Dr. Cook's many significant contributions as Vice-President (Indigenous) and do not include her many notable contributions in her earlier roles as Vice-Dean (Indigenous) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, and as associate professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences. Taken together, Dr. Cook's contributions are generational in impact, and have been pivotal in pursuing the University of Manitoba's commitment to advance Reconciliation at all levels - in governance, leadership, and practice, and to be national leaders in this journey. With the end of Dr. Cook's term nearing, the process to search for a new Vice-President (Indigenous) has begun. [cid:image001.png@01D97690.440E5B20] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba's mandatory masking protocol will end when Summer Term begins on May 1. From that date forward, masking will be strongly encouraged, and UM will continue to supply masks as the university still recommends people use them, especially in indoor spaces that do not allow for distancing. This change will align UM with current public health practices across the province. As we remove the masking mandate, individuals' risk assessments will vary and I ask everyone in this community to respect the decisions of others<https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/respectful-work-and-learning-environment-poli….>. Throughout the pandemic, UM has been very mindful of the most vulnerable among us who carried (and continue to carry) more burden than the majority had to. This is why we are one of the last institutions in Canada to lift its mask mandate. This mandate helped keep our community safe while vaccines were rolled out, and while hospitals were under the greatest strain. UM has also been assessing our HVAC systems and making improvements to support optimal air quality. Thank you to everyone who has consistently prioritized public health by wearing a mask. Our inter-disciplinary delegation of UM researchers was joined by two citizens from Carcross/Tagish First Nation and played a vital role in setting the agenda for global water governance and sustainability. At the end of March, I was also thrilled to read about the important work being undertaken by a group of UM Engineering students<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-cubesat-ready-for-lift-off/> whose UM Cube Satellite was selected by the Canadian Space Agency to travel to the International Space Station in June. The satellite will reach the space station later this summer and collect important information about how space conditions affect the composition of asteroids and the Moon. Well done! We are now entering the second stage of the consultation process, and we want to engage with you further through a student survey. This online survey has been informed by the discussions in the first phase, and it provides an opportunity to dive deeper into the UM community’s thoughts and goals about the university’s future. Campus Commute survey – we need your input!

[University of Manitoba Logo] UM community, UM needs your help to improve your campus commute and inform future transportation planning! Fill out the 2023 Campus Commute survey<http://umanitoba.ca/campuscommute> between January 16 and 31, 2023 for a chance to win a $500 grocery gift certificate or one of ten $50 gift vouchers to Degrees, Campo or Starbucks. Results of the Campus Commute Survey inform strategic planning around transportation related infrastructure, education and peer-based programs in support of climate action, sustainability and wellness goals. This year’s Campus Commute Survey also includes questions to help us better understand our greenhouse gas emissions from commuting and air travel and to inform future strategies for the UM Climate Action Plan. The UM Climate Action Plan is a new framework that will help us halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and become carbon neutral by 2050. In 2019, 29% of our total emissions were generated from transportation related to commuting, business and research travel, and fleet vehicles. This survey is approved by the UM Survey Review Committee and administered by the Green Action Centre. They provide specialized expertise and intricate data analysis and calculations for greenhouse gas emissions, and support transportation surveys and strategies for many other organizations including the City of Winnipeg. UM has a longstanding relationship with the Green Action Centre, which has supported previous UM Campus Commute surveys, and provides informed recommendations based on survey results. The survey is organized biennially by the Office of Sustainability. As we emerge from the pandemic, we can now come together to ask ourselves how we best focus our attention and resources toward shared goals. The world has changed significantly since we created Taking Our Place<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2020-06/um-strategic-plan-2015-202…> more than seven years ago. Now is the time to come together to ask ourselves how we will bring about the most needed change in this new era-how we will inspire and advance big ideas and solve the world's pressing problems. University strategic plan process and consultations We are co-chairing a broadly representative Strategic Planning Committee to lead internal and external consultations and draft the plan. We have also sought the expertise of Alex Usher and his team at Higher Education Strategy Associates (HESA) to support our work. As we look forward, I'm excited for what we'll achieve together in 2023. Last year offered much to be proud of. We had a very successful return to in-person teaching and learning, celebrated many awards, made incredible breakthroughs in research, and contributed to our province and beyond in remarkable ways. 2022 also saw a record-setting nine Vanier Scholars<https://news.umanitoba.ca/vanier2022/>, an incredible federal investment<https://news.umanitoba.ca/national-centre-for-truth-and-reconciliation-welc…'s,home%20and%20long%20term%20work&text=Residential%20school%20Survivors%20and%20the,at%20the%20University%20of%20Manitoba.> in the future of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation<https://nctr.ca/> and a transformational gift<https://news.umanitoba.ca/gatesfoundation/> from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for UM researchers' work to improve maternal and newborn health in India. Together, we're making progress on our Reconciliation Action Plan, our Anti-Racism Strategy, and much work is being done to ensure our campus is a safe space where everyone can dream big. Thank you to all our faculty, staff, coaches, mentors and students for consistently striving for excellence in every endeavor. One of the most important initiatives we will undertake together this year is creating the next iteration of our strategic plan. We will offer many opportunities for you to engage, and I look forward to sharing details with you on the process later this month. Our efforts matter greatly to students, Manitobans, and the global community. We are Manitoba's research university and I am deeply proud to lead this institution and to champion how we collectively enhance our entire province. Finally, thank you for continuing to wear masks. One of the highlights that I am really excited to share with you, is the return of the rink on the Quad at the Fort Garry campus! In addition to adding and dropping courses, you will be able to add yourself to a waitlist during this time. University of Manitoba Mask Mandate

[cid:image001.png@01D90E16.FF0E31D0] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba is extending its mandatory masking policy into the Winter Term to continue supporting a safe work and learning environment. We made this decision after consulting with public health experts and our UM community. We have heard from many of you, and we recognize that there is a diverse range of perspectives on the current need for masks. At this time, many in our community continue to ask that UM maintain its mask policy to support a safe in-person environment. Though we know a mask mandate can't continue indefinitely, we also know that COVID and other respiratory infection cases are high and putting significant strain on our health care system. Masks are among the most effective public health tools to reduce transmission, and use is far greater when supported by a mandate. We will look at easing the mask mandate when it is safer to do so. Going into Winter Term, a mask mandate is the best way to protect our community right now.
