As exam time approaches, more students are studying on campus, and daylight saving time is bringing darkness at an earlier hour, we want to remind everyone to stay alert. UM is committed to your safety, and has many protocols, programs, and tools in place to help keep you safe. Security Services would like to remind everyone about the Safe Walk Program<https://umanitoba.ca/security/um-safe>, which allows you to request a safe walk 24 hours a day on Fort Garry or Bannatyne campuses. You are also encouraged to contact Security Services any time to report any suspicious activity. This is a return to Canada for me, having previously served as Griffith University's Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Director, Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct in Australia. UM to recognize national holiday on Sept. 19

The University of Manitoba will close on Sept. 19, 2022 to coincide with the national holiday recently announced by the federal government marking the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth reigned as monarch of The Commonwealth for 70 years, the longest of any British ruler. She passed away on Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96. All Canada and Manitoba flags on the Fort Garry campus are flying at half-mast<https://news.umanitoba.ca/flag-lowered-for-queen-elizabeth-ii/> until Sept. 19. Classes will be cancelled for the day and may be rescheduled on a case-by-case basis. For staff, the day will be a one-time statutory holiday. If you have questions, please reach out to your supervisor or instructor. UM buildings and services, including libraries, will also be closed on Sept. 19 and will reopen on Sept. 20. The announced federal holiday is for 2022 only and will not be an annual holiday.

COVID-19 update on masking, continued in-person classes

As communicated in March,<https://news.umanitoba.ca/update-on-vaccine-mask-and-illness-protocols-for-…> classes and events on our campuses have returned to being held in-person and will continue to be in-person going forward. As always, we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, apply health and safety protocols that ensure the wellness of our community, and will inform our community if our approach changes. With recent celebrations like Spring Convocation and Pride, it's been fantastic to see the UM community come together in-person again. Keeping this thriving network of students, faculty and staff safe continues to be our top priority and we can all do our part to make this possible. Here's a reminder of existing protocols which will continue to be in place until further notice, as well as some updates: Continued masking COVID-19 continues to circulate in Manitoba, and we are beginning to see discussions in a number of provinces about preparations for possible additional surges in fall. As a result, we have decided that the existing masking mandate will continue in September - KN95 masks are highly recommended, but 3-ply medical masks (minimum ASTM Grade 2) will also be acceptable. Regardless of mask type, please ensure your mask is fitted properly<https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/publications/diseases-condi…> to maintain maximum effectiveness. Both types of masks are available at UM. Mask distribution sites will once again be available on campus, with locations to be shared closer to the start of Fall Term. Masks are not required outdoors. We have made two adjustments to the masking protocol beginning in Fall Term. First, instructors may choose to remove their mask when actively teaching, provided a 2m distance can be maintained from students. Second, staff may remove their mask when seated at a cubicle-type workspace, provided there is a physical barrier to adjacent workers (e.g., cubicle partition) or a minimum of 2m separation from others. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, and adjust our protocols as required. Vaccination encouraged, proof of vaccination no longer required As of May 4, UM no longer requires staff, students or visitors coming to our campus to have proof of vaccination. All students will be free to register for in-person courses. We encourage everyone to be up-to-date with their COVID-19 vaccinations, including a first and second booster as you are eligible<https://www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/vaccine/eligibility-criteria.html#adult>. This can protect you by decreasing severe outcomes and chances of hospitalization, and will help to protect our UM community. All adults (age 18+) can receive their primary vaccination series (two doses) as well as a booster shot (third dose) of a COVID-19 vaccine at any location that offers the COVID-19 vaccine. At least a four-month timeframe between second and third doses is recommended. Some higher-risk groups are eligible to receive a second booster (fourth dose). Those age 12-17 are eligible to receive a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. [cid:image001.png@01D87439.EF3C1640] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Progress Pride Flag to permanently fly on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses; join us at the Pride Parade The University of Manitoba has long raised the Pride Flag on our campuses in a ceremony that reminds us of our duty to create diverse, welcoming and inclusive communities. On June 1, we will raise it again, and this time it will remain up to permanently fly on our Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. Join us as we raise the Progress Pride Flag in front of UMSU University Centre, across from Administration Building, at 9 a.m. and hear from Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management professor Fenton Litwiller (they/them), who is Chair of UMQueer. Pride Week and Pride Month are about coming together to celebrate. We are thrilled to be able to do this in person again, and I encourage everyone to take part in any or all of this year’s events, like the Pride Parade<https://news.umanitoba.ca/pride-2022-celebrations-include-the-return-of-the…>. These events are enriching and serve as reminders to be in allyship with two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, asexual, and other sexual or gender identities (2SLGBTQIA+) all year long. UM is committed to work with integrity and passion in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. For example, the UM Queer Committee has worked with staff, students and faculty to encourage awareness and diversity, and the University of Manitoba Student Union created a 2SLGBTQIA+ representative position as well as the Rainbow Pride Mosaic resource centre. I’m grateful for the work these groups do all year long, supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community’s artists, educators and advocates. Our faculty drive much change as well, like professor Robert Mizzi, Canada Research Chair in Queer, Community and Diversity Education. His research examines the various anti-homo/transphobic educational programs in use throughout society to determine their effectiveness on policy development and social cohesion. His findings will change the way we engage educational interventions around 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion and ultimately lead to more safe, diverse, and prosperous workplaces. There is always more to do, and we will continue to move forward together. Pride is not about standing on a curb watching a parade. It’s about working with each other to create a society where everyone knows they belong. It’s wonderful to see the smiles of our friends and colleagues, to pause for informal chats in hallways and to enjoy the outdoor spaces. This past weekend, many of us also had the opportunity to gather in-person to honour Indigenous graduates at the Annual Traditional Graduation Pow Wow<https://umanitoba.ca/indigenous/student-experience/annual-traditional-gradu…>. It was a beautiful event and wonderful to be part of the celebration. Reconnect at Campus Beautification Days We invite the entire UM community to dig in for Campus Beautification Days<https://news.umanitoba.ca/campus-beautification-days-are-back/>, which are taking place again after a two-year hiatus. Join in at Bannatyne campus on Friday, May 13 and on Wednesday, June 1 at Fort Garry campus (rain date June 2). For those of you studying over Summer Term, we are beyond excited to welcome you back! We have missed your energy on campus these past two years and are looking forward to seeing you in person. Whether you are a new student joining us for the first time, or a continuing student looking to get ahead in your degree, there are some important things to know for the return to in-person classes. COVID-19 Protocols Wearing a mask is still required for Summer Term. KN95 masks are highly recommended, but 3-ply medical masks (ASTM Grade 2) will be the minimum acceptable. Action required: IST anticipates an increase in requests for support leading up to May 4. You must enrol your account and add a device before the deadline to continue using a growing list of common UM applications. These include Microsoft365 (Outlook, Word, Excel etc.), UM Intranet, UM Zoom and Epic. Mario Pinto as the University of Manitoba’s next Vice-President (Research and International). Dr. Pinto is currently serving as Director of the Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct, in Queensland, Australia, having recently served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research at Griffith University, Australia. Dr. Pinto will assume his position at UM on October 1, 2022. A return to Canada, Dr. Pinto received his undergraduate degree and doctorate from Queen’s University in Ontario, before being appointed Chair of Chemistry and Vice-President Research at Simon Fraser University, in British Columbia. Dr. Pinto was later appointed President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, where he championed investment in creative, critical, and adaptive thought, the equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) agenda, and youth STEM education as an architect of the National Science Odyssey program. An accomplished researcher, Dr. Pinto has published more than 250 papers in chemical biology and holds a simple but firm view on research. “A recognition of scholarly impact is what counts and quality publication and innovation remain at the core,” he said. “Researchers must also take some risks and not wander aimlessly down the well-trodden path.” Dr. Pinto holds a Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada. Renowned as a champion of global connectivity, Dr. Pinto has fostered lasting international partnerships with the Bombay Stock Exchange, Indian Oil Corporation, Sri Lanka’s National Science Foundation, and many others. In Canada, Dr. Pinto has also served as Co-chair of the Canada-India Joint Science and Technology Committee, and Chair of the Global Research Council. Dr. Pinto also brings a breadth of experience in research commercialization, as one of the founding members of the Centre for Drug Research and Development, VentureLabs® and Venture Connection, and as a primary advocate for the inception of the Canada Accelerator Incubator Program (CAIP). Dr. Pinto will seek to bring diverse voices and research perspectives to the forefront at the University of Manitoba, building on his work as Chair of the 11th International Gender Summit which focused on the theme of Pluralism, Ethnicity & Inclusion – Canadian Values in a Global Context. Dr. Pinto remains a strong advocate of collaboration between arts and sciences as a pathway to productive change. I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Digvir Jayas for his steadfast guidance as Vice-President (Research and International). Dr. Jayas helped to achieve record levels of research income for UM, initiated the Transformational Partnerships program to enhance collaborations with Manitoba industry, and his inspirational approach to engaging youth in science and research through the annual SET Day program has brought a whole new generation of innovative thinkers to the University of Manitoba. UM will temporarily move to remote operations in response to snowstorm

In light of the forecasted major Spring storm, UM will move to remote operations for Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14. Weather conditions are expected to be extremely poor with dangerous road conditions, and all non-essential in-person activity should be postponed or moved to remote. All students, faculty and staff who are not required on campus are asked not to attend campus. Only minimum essential services will be operating. Remote classes and work All in-person instruction planned for April 13 and 14 should be cancelled. Remote classes can continue as planned. Where the type of work allows, employees are asked to work remotely. Where the type of work does not allow for remote work, employees are asked to report into their supervisors to determine if it is critical for their job to be on-campus. Most employees (those who have regular hours) should be considered as working during this time. Time should continue to be entered as 'regular work.' Where an employee does not have regular hours, they may have their work rescheduled if they are unable to work (in accordance with the applicable policy or collective agreement). Those who are already booked to be away (on vacation or sick time), should continue to be recorded as such. UM pledging $1M to emergency bursaries

[cid:image001.png@01D7F583.FE6805F0] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor The University of Manitoba has pledged up to $1,000,000 to its Emergency Bursary Fund to provide robust financial support to students in financial distress as a result of the war in Ukraine, international conflicts, environmental catastrophes and extraordinary life events. Manitoba is home to one of the largest populations of Ukraine diaspora in Canada and we take our obligation to address this crisis seriously. We recognize that war and geopolitical events can impact our international students, and that domestic students can similarly experience emergencies that impact their finances and create unexpected need. Students lose access to funds for various reasons, and this emergency support will help students pay for the full cost of their tuition, residence, and other living expenses as required. These funds are available to those in need right now. The university is prioritizing funds toward this immediate need and I want to thank our university community, including our alumni and donors, who continue to step up to meet the increased demand for emergency student supports such the UM Student Food Bank<https://umanitoba.ca/financial-aid-and-awards/u-m-food-bank>. With the return of the Canada geese and warmer weather on the way, that means a new academic term is on the horizon. I know that many of you have been asking about the status of in-person learning and COVID protocols for the Summer Term. I am writing to reinforce key information conveyed in the President's message yesterday and to provide important updates. Changes to UM COVID-19 protocols President Benarroch has announced<https://news.umanitoba.ca/update-on-vaccine-mask-and-illness-protocols-for-…> that as of May 4, UM will no longer require students, staff, faculty and visitors to show proof of vaccination when attending campus, and Summer Term will be in-person. UM will also continue to offer a wide variety of Distance Education courses. We have heard from many of you that masking is still welcome, and based on advice from our health experts, masks will continue to be required in all indoor spaces. If you are sick, please stay home. If you test positive for COVID-19, stay home for a minimum of five days. Immediately contact your instructor to make arrangements for extensions, deferrals or make-up assignments without academic penalty. [cid:image001.png@01D83D25.1F2E6C50] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor Update on vaccine, mask and illness protocols for Summer Term This week marks two years since UM moved to remote operations to help stop the spread of COVID-19, and since then our community has continued to make sacrifices in support of public health while offering the best-possible teaching and learning experience in these challenging times. As the Omicron wave is receding, we are cautiously increasing in-person activity and looking to ease some restrictions. It is heartening to see more and more of you on our campuses and we are optimistic that we can continue toward more normal operations. Vaccine mandate will end after Winter Term, masks continue Today, we are announcing that starting May 4, UM will no longer require staff, students or visitors coming to our campus to have proof of vaccination. We will, however, continue to make the wearing of masks mandatory. We also continue to improve our ventilation systems to ensure a healthier environment for all. We expect the majority of our classes will be held in-person in Summer Term, but we will continue to offer an important complement of Distance Education courses. Stay home when you are sick We continue to ask anyone who is sick to stay home, and if you have a positive COVID-19 test, stay home for a minimum of five days<https://umanitoba.ca/covid-19/health-safety#testing-and-illness>. Employee sick time or remote work arrangements (where possible) can be used for self-isolation - please connect with your supervisor to make required arrangements. Students should work directly with instructors to seek reasonable accommodation. As you know, the provincial government is beginning the process of loosening their pandemic-related restrictions this week. However, we expect our UM community to continue to follow the updated UM health and safety guidelines. The health and well-being of our students remains a top priority, and it is up to everyone on campus to work together to contribute to this effort. The following protocols are effective until the end of Winter Term on May 3. Mandatory vaccination UM's vaccine mandate requires all students and employees on campus to be double vaccinated and to have uploaded proof of vaccination on UM's website, or to have received an approved medical or religious exemption. Rapid testing is no longer an alternative to vaccination. Masking required KN95 masks must be worn in all indoor spaces on UM campuses. The only exceptions are if you are alone in a room with the door closed or eating in areas designated for food consumption. Masks are not required outdoors. If you visit the COVID-19 health and safety website<https://umanitoba.ca/covid-19/health-safety>, you'll find a list of places where you can pick up a mask, and the hours of operation for each. If you are coming to campus and do not have a KN95 mask, you can wear your own cloth or 3-ply mask while you go immediately to the closest mask pick-up location. After the initial mask pick-up, it's expected that you will have a supply of KN95 masks to wear, even when attending the distribution locations to access more masks. Reporting illness If you are not feeling well, stay at home or immediately go home. If you are symptomatic or test positive for COVID-19 and need to self-isolate: Students should immediately contact their instructor to make arrangements for extensions, deferrals or make-up assignments without academic penalty. My thoughts are with our Ukrainian students and those with ties to Russia and Eastern Europe who have been affected by the invasion of Ukraine. Emerging from a gap in the literature on the climate of marginalized students on campus, this study has two primary objectives: 1. To analyze how equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) discourses attend to intersectionality as means to address the problem of social and systemic oppression on university campuses. 2. To identify how EDI discourses attend to the issue of physical space, and the extent to which campus geography both reflects and contributes to the experience of oppression among multiply-marginalized students. Our aim is to recruit 10-15 multiply-marginalized students on campus to share their experiences and opinions on a host of questions ranging from student experience to campus spaces. We also ask the participants to describe their inclusion/exclusion experiences on the campus map. We hope to uncover ways to make improvements to EDI practices through this research project. We will certainly protect the confidentiality of all participants and have received ethics approval from the Education/Nursing Research Ethics Board at the University of Manitoba to conduct this study. We recognize that the province has an upcoming schedule for loosening restrictions. UM continues to meet or exceed the required health orders. The protocols below are effective February 22, until the end of Winter Term on May 3. Mandatory vaccination UM's vaccine mandate<https://umanitoba.ca/covid-19/vaccine-information> requires all students and employees on campus to be double vaccinated and to have uploaded proof of vaccination on UM's website, or to have received an approved medical or religious exemption. Rapid testing is no longer an alternative to vaccination. Masking required KN95 masks are required in all indoor spaces. The only exceptions are if you are alone in an office or room with the door closed, or while eating in areas designed for food consumption. No eye protection will be required except for specific occupational health and safety requirements (e.g., safety glasses in labs, clinical skills sessions). Masks will not be required outdoors. KN95 masks will be distributed by UM at tables set up in the locations below. Faculties and units will also have a supply of KN95 masks for employees. If you are coming to campus and do not have a KN95 mask, you can wear your own cloth or 3-ply mask on campus while you go immediately to the closest mask pick-up location. After the initial mask pick-up, it's expected that employees and students will have a supply of KN95 masks to wear, including when attending the distribution locations to access more masks. I'm writing today to provide a brief update and to share information regarding the resources available to students to support your academic and personal success. Benarroch and Hiebert-Murphy made an announcement<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-will-resume-partial-in-person-teaching-and-lea…> on February 2nd that the University of Manitoba will undertake a partial return of priority in-person classes effective February 28th. We have heard from many of you already and know you have questions. The primary purpose of this message today is to provide you with the answers that I have now, with further updates to be communicated to you as they become available. The University of Manitoba is a research-intensive university comprised of diverse disciplines, some of which must provide significant opportunities for hands-on learning in order to achieve core learning outcomes. Certain courses and labs in Engineering, the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Music, and the Faculty of Science, for example, must be delivered in-person to support students in developing the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to advance in their programs and, ultimately, to graduate. As always, the University's decisions are guided by public health advice that prioritizes the health and safety of faculty, students and staff while also considering academic requirements. Deans are working with their teams to determine which courses are essential for in-person delivery. Winter Term courses currently being delivered remotely will remain remote. Some courses that were originally planned to be delivered in-person may shift to remote learning (RL). How do I know if my course will be delivered remotely or in-person after the winter break? By February 11th, we will make an announcement regarding courses that will be delivered in-person and those that will now be offered remotely. This information will also be available in Aurora to view. As a reminder, when you registered for Winter Term courses in Aurora, the delivery method was indicated: * Courses marked RL are courses that are being delivered entirely remotely * Courses marked DE are distance education courses that are being delivered entirely online * Courses marked TBA are courses that will be delivered in-person with the physical location to be announced before February 28th Extension of the Drop Date and Winter Tuition Fee Payment Deadline In light of this announcement, the University has extended the drop date for Winter Term and Winter/Summer spanning courses without financial penalty to Monday, February 28th, 2022. The fee payment deadline has also been extended to Tuesday, March 8th. Visit the Registrar's website for more information about important dates and deadlines<https://umanitoba.ca/registrar/important-dates-deadlines#winter-term-2022> for the Winter Term. There has been no change to the "Add" date. Voluntary Withdrawal (VW) Date As a reminder, an announcement was made several weeks' ago that the VW date was shifted to the last day of Winter Term classes - Monday, April 25th, 2022. UM is taking every precaution to keep you safe. Health and safety protocols are being reviewed continuously. Please check the COVID-19 health and safety protocols website<https://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/health-safety> for up-to-date information. Effective this week, over 90% of registered students have uploaded proof of vaccination. Those who have not done so have been de-registered from in-person courses. A second wave of de-registrations will occur after the last day to add Winter Term courses and following the conclusion of the registration revision period. Study space on campus If your schedule is such that you will have a mix of in-person and remote classes, we are working hard to ensure there are spaces for you to go between classes, and there is availability over extended hours. I will provide you with more details about study spaces and the reopening timeline for library locations as soon as that information is available. Technology Fund In recognition of the fact that some students will be navigating between in-person and remote learning courses following the winter break, the university has re-opened the Student Technology Fund. To be eligible for this program, students must be registered full-time and taking at least one in-person course for the Winter 2022 term and lack consistent access to a laptop that meets requirements for remote studies at UM. In addition, students must declare a lack of financial resources to purchase a computer that meets the stated requirements, be in good academic standing (for undergraduate students minimum 2.0-degree GPA, for graduate students 3.0-degree GPA), and have a good financial standing with the university (no financial holds for overdue fees or fines). There are a limited number of subsidies available. You will automatically be sent an online application form and notified of results via email if successful. [cid:image001.png@01D81850.952D64A0] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor, and Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) To our UM community, UM will resume partial in-person teaching and learning based on course requirements In light of the continued impact of the Omicron variant, the University of Manitoba has asked Deans to support the safe, partial return of priority in-person teaching and learning for the second half of Winter Term, beginning February 28. Deans are currently working with their teams to determine what activity is most essential for in-person delivery. Faculties and Schools will determine which courses will remain remote for the duration of the term and which courses will be delivered in-person. Courses currently being delivered in-person will continue as such. Some courses that were originally planned to be in-person may continue with remote delivery. As always, we will be guided by public health advice and prioritize the health and safety of faculty, students and staff while working to meet the pedagogical demands of programs. Full details will be shared by February 11 Faculties will confirm their plans in the coming days, and we will make a detailed announcement regarding the partial return by February 11. We will extend the course drop date so that students can withdraw from courses after the announcement without facing academic or financial consequences. Some staff will be required to return to campus to support in-person academic activities. Supervisors will continue to work with staff to determine who will return and how they will be supported. Balanced approach to support student success We have listened to a range of perspectives on the matter of our operations and believe this approach is the most prudent given UM's mandatory vaccine policy, stringent COVID protocols, and commitment to an outstanding student experience. [cid:image005.png@01D8120B.D23C5860] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor I am extremely pleased to announce that at its meeting on Jan. 25, 2022, the Board of Governors approved the appointment of Distinguished Professor Tina Chen to the newly created position of Executive Lead (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) at the University of Manitoba. When her inaugural two-year term begins on Feb. 1, 2022, Dr. Chen will report directly to me and will work with our community to implement the seven recommendations provided in the Final Report of the President's Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion<https://umanitoba.ca/sites/default/files/2021-06/presidents_task_force_on_e…>, including recommended structure and resourcing. She will provide overall leadership of the university's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, and analyze the issues raised by the Task Force Report, ensuring we continually question our systems and processes in an effort to eradicate all systemic inequities and biases. Dr. Chen joined UM in 1999 as an Assistant Professor of history and has since led a research program focused on Asian experiences and alternatives to colonialism, militarism, and systems of oppression, as well as feminism and cultural politics in China. Within the department of history, Dr. Chen has served as Honours Chair (2004-2006) and Associate Head (2006-2012), and was the first racialized person to be named Head of the history department in 2013, a role she held through 2020. Under Dr. Chen's leadership, the history department integrated equity, diversity, access and inclusion into its strategic planning, initiatives, program review and everyday administrative processes. Dr. Chen has also provided leadership to Faculty and University EDI initiatives, including serving on the Joint Committee on Sex Based Salary Differentials, aiding the UM in developing equitable COVID-19 policies, and as a long-serving elected member of Senate Executive and Senate who has spoken to our internal community on topics such as administrative activism and equity-based decision making. She has also lent her leadership to bodies outside UM, most recently through her involvement in two National Forums on Anti-Asian Racism, participation in the Community Advisory Board on Covid-19 Race, Ethnicity, and Indigeneity data, and as a national leader for anti-racism and EDI in figure skating. Throughout her academic career, Dr. Chen has been lauded with numerous honours, including the rank of Distinguished Professor, the Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Campbell Outreach Award, the Rh Award for Outstanding Contributions to Scholarship and Research, the City of Winnipeg's Community Service Award, the YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award, Canada Race Relations Foundation Community Champion Award, and being named as one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women's Executive Network. She also recently received a teaching award to co-create and co-teach the first course at UM on, "Histories of Race and Anti-Racism in the Modern World." Dr. Chen received her bachelor's degree with distinction from the University of Toronto, and earned her master's and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a highly regarded historian and champion of human rights and inclusion, Dr. Chen will fulfill her duties with great insight, integrity and passion. I am thankful she has taken on this new role and I look forward to working closely with her on these important matters. COVID-19 health and safety update

As we continue to monitor the Omicron variant, we are enhancing health and safety measures under the guidance of medical experts. All non-essential activity will continue remotely As communicated in President Benarroch's message on December 20<https://news.umanitoba.ca/um-moving-the-start-of-winter-term-to-remote/?utm…>, from now until the end of the Winter Term break on February 26, 2022, all non-essential activity will continue remotely. Only those staff members deemed essential are to be on campus during this period. All other staff are to work remotely. Course activity has been moved to remote delivery wherever possible. For further information, students can connect with their faculties, and staff can reach out to their supervisors. Higher grade masks provided for those on campus Where possible, two metres of physical distancing is to be maintained. Medical grade masks will be provided for employees and students who need to be on campus, and are able to physically distance. Employees and students who are required to be on campus and are engaged in activities for which distancing cannot be maintained will be provided with KN95 masks and eye goggles or shields. Please ensure your mask is fitted properly<https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/publications/diseases-condi…> to maintain maximum effectiveness. These masks and enhanced PPE items such as reusable eye protection, are available through central procurement and units are responsible for acquiring and distributing them. For students required to be on campus, these items will be available at the specific classroom locations, as supplied by units. UM moving the start of Winter Term to remote: Update from Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor

I respect the growing concerns and I want to assure you that we take the ever-evolving situation very seriously. >From now until the end of the Winter Term break on February 26, 2022, all non-essential activity will continue remotely. Effective immediately, we are asking staff to work remotely and for course activity to be moved to remote delivery wherever possible. Limited in-person activity may continue if required and there is no reasonable remote alternative. Further information will be provided to students by their faculties and to staff by their supervisors. Our decision to require all those attending campus to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19<https://umanitoba.ca/coronavirus/vaccine-information>, except those few with an approved exemption, was taken to significantly enhance the safety in our community of learning, discovery and engagement. This requirement will remain in effect for all those attending campus beginning January 24, 2022 when rapid testing will no longer be an approved alternative to vaccination. We are carefully monitoring the emerging Omicron variant, and we will use the leadup to the Winter Term break to re-evaluate our approach and respond to any changes in public health orders. We do hope that we will be in a position to resume face-to-face operations for the remainder of the Winter Term, but this will be guided by what the public health experts deem to be both prudent and safe.
