The event and Q&A session following the lecture will be emceed by Dayna Spiring [BA/98; LLB/01]. She is the recipient of UM’s 2023 IGNITE award, the first woman to have her name engraved on the CFL’s Grey Cup, and the driving force behind many sporting events, including Winnipeg’s successful bid to host the 2025 Grey Cup. Sinclair is the former captain of Canada’s women’s soccer team and an iconic athlete who has led teams through five Olympics (winning gold and two bronze medals) and five World Cups. With an astonishing 190 goals in 300 international matches, she holds the record as the all-time leading scorer in international soccer history. The five-time Olympian is also an Officer of the Order of Canada, an ambassador for the MS Society of Canada, and an advocate for gender equality. In her lecture she will share her inspiring journey—detailing the teamwork, passion, and resilience that propelled her to the top of her sport. She’ll also talk about the barriers female athletes face and how we can collectively work to dismantle them to build a more inclusive future. I hope you have many opportunities to connect with the people and places that give you joy, and to engage in activities that calm your mind and fill you with inspiration. As you head into this well-deserved break, here are a few things to keep in mind: The university will be closed at 4:30 p.m. on December 20 and reopen on January 2, with Winter Term classes beginning on January 6, 2025. Update on Emergency Response and Safety Enhancements

Last month, we committed to review<https://news.umanitoba.ca/follow-up-on-campus-safety-incident/> our response to the November 19 report of an armed person on the Fort Garry campus. While the report was unsubstantiated, we remain committed to transparency and continuous improvement in our emergency response efforts. Such reviews take place after any serious incident as outlined in UM's Emergency Response Plan. The Emergency Response Team and UM leadership have now completed that review and created a plan to strengthen our response in three key areas: communication, education and infrastructure. Areas for Improvement: Communications: * Ensure information is shared in a timely manner on a range of channels. * Increase adoption of the UM Safe App<https://umanitoba.ca/security/#your-safety-on-campus> among students, staff, and faculty. This includes promoting the App in acceptance letters, onboarding and performance reviews. * Explore ways to expedite communication during emergencies, so that UM Safe App messages and emails reach our community as soon as they are sent. * Ensure coordination with Winnipeg Police Service when they are communicating about our campus. Education: * Expand training on the Emergency Response Plan and safety protocols, offering annual sessions to the entire UM community and tailored sessions for leaders, faculties and units. * Offer training sessions in partnership with the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) about how to support safety in the event of an active threat on campus. Infrastructure: * Continue to update the closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) across campuses, including hiring a security consultant to provide additional feedback to enhance the campus CCTVs. * Upgrade the loudspeaker system on the Fort Garry campus to ensure clearer communication. * Continue installation of additional Code Blue emergency poles for enhanced access to security services at both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. Looking Ahead We wanted to share this update with you now, as we close out 2024, and commit to additional updates in the New Year. I also want to thank our security teams, emergency responders, and campus community for their efforts and cooperation. Knowing that this can be a stressful time, I would like to share some information about resources and supports that you may find helpful over the next two weeks. As you prepare for your exams, I encourage you to access the Content and Study Skills tutors<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-learning/t…> at the Academic Learning Centre (ALC). They continue to hold one-to-one appointments throughout the exam period. Various other resources are offered through the ALC<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-learning/t…>, such as Writing tutors and specialized supports for graduate students. Academic Advisors<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/academic-advising> are also available to you until the last day of exams on December 20. Students must ensure that all items required for the examination are placed on top of the desk prior to the start of the examination. 1. Attendance & identification: Students must display their UM student ID card or government issued photo identification (such as a passport or driver's license) and are required to sign an attendance form. 1. Follow-Up on Campus Safety Incident

[University of Manitoba Banner with University of Manitoba logo] Message from Dr. Michael Benarroch, President and Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dear UM community, The University of Manitoba is committed to supporting the safety of our campus community, and we acknowledge the distress caused to some by yesterday's events. Please understand, that as this is an ongoing police investigation, we are limited in our ability to comment on the matter, however we can provide the following update. UM Security immediately responded to the incident reported early yesterday morning, working closely with Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) to assess and address appropriately. As with any report of a potential threat to campus safety, our first priority is to secure impacted areas. UM sent out information through multiple channels including the campus loudspeaker, UM's social media channels, umanitoba.ca, email, and UM Learn. Out of an abundance of caution and to support the WPS response efforts, UM made the decision to cancel in-person classes and exams on the Fort Garry Campus for the remainder of the day. We are aware of concerns that information was not shared quickly enough. As with any event of this nature, we will review the effectiveness and efficiency of our relevant protocols to ensure our processes align with our commitment to a safe and supportive environment. In their afternoon press conference on November 19, WPS reported that there were "no injuries" and said, "we don't have any information right now that would bring us to believe that someone was assaulted." We continue to take this matter seriously and are cooperating fully with authorities on this ongoing investigation. We recognize that incidents like these can cause stress and anxiety for some members of our community, especially in the context of recent events.
