Greetings, My name is Fran Mulhall and I am a Graduate Student in the Department of Environment and Geography being advised by Dr. Michael Campbell. I would like to invite you to participate in a study I am conducting toward my Master of Environment thesis on the topic: Values and Attitudes Toward Canada Geese and Population Management on the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry Campus. In this study, campus users including faculty, staff and students are invited to take part in an online questionnaire that aims to better understand how campus users feel about Canada geese on campus and different population management options. Your views are important and may inform policy decisions about wildlife management on campus. The survey is estimated to take you approximately 20 minutes to complete and can be navigated using a laptop, tablet or smart phone. You do not have to provide any personal, identifying information to participate. Responses will be kept confidential, and no registration is required. Data will be analyzed as part of my Master’s thesis and published in academic journal articles as well as shared with the University of Manitoba Sustainability Office and the Vice-Provost office. Your participation is completely voluntary. You can withdraw from this survey at any time or skip any questions you do not wish to answer, however, any responses will not be able to be withdrawn once submitted. All data is kept confidentially (you will not be asked for your name or any other identifying information) and I will not be able to withdraw your data once it has been submitted. This message is sent on behalf of Christine Cyr, Associate Vice-President (Indigenous), Students, Community, and Cultural Integration & Laurie Schnarr, Vice-Provost (Students). ________________________________ Hello students, It's been one week since we learned about the 215 little ones who didn't go home, and it has been a very hard week. We are grieving with you, and we are holding our communities close in our prayers. We are especially praying for the Survivors and the families of the little ones who did not come home. We know that many of you are sad, angry, and shocked. Please know that we are holding space for you in many different ways. We are having Sharing Circles. Instructors have been opening up class time for talking about what we found out. We have a large community of staff and faculty who are here for you. We have been checking in on many people in our community with phone calls, emails, and text messages too, and we know that you have been doing the same. That's what we do - we take care of each other. Please keep checking on each other. Our Elders have been leading ceremonies this week and are available for one-on-one phone calls if you just need someone to talk to. They are so strong and have been teaching us how to get through this with their kind words and courageous stories. We are so grateful for them, and in saying that, we ask you to keep checking on the Elders in your circle - they are doing a lot of the heavy lifting right now. When we can gather in person, we will. Announcement from President Michael Benarroch: Provost and Vice-President (Academic)

Good morning, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Diane Hiebert-Murphy as the University of Manitoba's next Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Hiebert-Murphy [BSW/82; MA/87; PhD/95] will assume her new portfolio on July 1, 2021. She currently serves the University as Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs), a position she has held since 2016. An accomplished researcher, clinician, mentor and administrator, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is an experienced consensus builder who leads and empowers others with her trusted and confident voice. As Provost and Vice-President (Academic), she will become the senior academic officer at the University of Manitoba, responsible for providing academic vision and leadership in all matters relating to students and academic staff, including academic programs, long-range academic planning, and enrolment management. As the chair of the President's Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy will also continue to help advance equity, diversity and inclusion at UM. She is also co-chair of the Sexual Violence Steering Committee, and so has been integral in drafting initiatives and policies to address sexual violence. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy will also help UM in its process of decolonization and Indigenization, work that is deeply important to every member of the University's leadership. As a Professor in the Faculty of Social Work and the Faculty of Arts' Psychological Service Centre, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is trained to look at how she can improve the interests of the whole community. And in 2019, she was honoured in a Star Blanket ceremony, which recognizes a person who humbly dedicates herself to the service of others. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is a passionate and dedicated educator and researcher who has advised more than 60 graduate students, has participated on advisory committees for another 60 students, and continues to advise students. She has co-edited three books, published over thirty-five peer-reviewed articles in addition to research reports and book chapters, and has been engaged in dissemination of her work at scholarly meetings, including international conferences. She is also a registered clinical psychologist who continues to engage in clinical practice while sustaining her research program. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy's research and scholarship focuses on intervention with families of young children with disabilities and families impacted by violence. Since 1998 she has received funding for the Couples Project, a service/student training/research program addressing intimate partner violence. Throughout her career at this university, Dr. Hiebert-Murphy has served in increasingly complex leadership roles, including as Associate Director of the Psychological Service Centre; Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Programs in the Faculty of Social Work; Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies; and as Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs). During her time as Vice-Provost, she also assumed the position of Acting Dean, Faculty of Social Work. In every role she has shown her passion for building an inclusive community, and her deep commitment to this University's vision of being a university that serves the interests of all Manitobans. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Dr. Janice Ristock for her exemplary leadership as Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Dr. Ristock's transformative approach to her role is evident in her focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning and the important interrelationship of teaching with research, and in her critical role in the development and implementation of a series of important initiatives that position the University of Manitoba extraordinarily well moving forward. These include her commitment to advancing our goals and priorities associated with Indigenous achievement, such as dedicated support to hire Indigenous scholars and through the establishment of the committee to review the role and mandate for Indigenous senior leadership at the University of Manitoba. They also include her proactive approach to equity, diversity and inclusion as seen for example in her development of a strong and more diverse team of deans; her vision for the development and expansion of experiential learning opportunities; and in her commitment to enhanced support for students, ranging from enhanced scholarship and bursary programs to student mental health supports. Invitation to Participate in a Research Study: Cross-Canada Release of the Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI)

Dear Student, You are invited to participate in a cross-Canada research study to evaluate post-secondary student stress led by Dr. Brooke Linden (Principal Investigator, Queen’s University). The Post-Secondary Student Stressors Index (PSSI) was designed to help post-secondary institutions across Canada better target campus mental health services, with the ultimate goal of improving mental health outcomes for students. To ensure that the PSSI would serve students in the best possible way, students were involved heavily throughout the development and testing of this tool. Now it’s time to use the PSSI at post-secondary institutions across Canada to improve our understanding of the types of stressors students are managing in different parts of the country. We are looking for student volunteers to complete an online survey. The first survey was conducted in October, and the second was conducted in January. If you did not participate in the survey in October or January, you can still participate this month! The survey should take you about 20 mins to complete. As a thank you for participating, you will have the opportunity to submit your e-mail into a draw after each survey for a chance to win one of several $50 gift cards. The vaccine is being administered to an increasing number of people, socially distanced patios are opening, and a strong sense of optimism is in the air! No matter where you are living during this remote learning period, I hope you are finding opportunities between your academic and other commitments to take time for yourselves. In this update, I am highlighting a few important upcoming events, reminding you of UM's Fall 2021 plans, and sharing news of supports available to you as you complete your last month of classes. UM Together: Reflecting on a year of Covid-19. Join us virtually on Tuesday, March 23<https://umanitoba.ca/campus-community-gatherings>rd as we gather together as a university community to pause and contemplate the last year of learning and working remotely. You'll hear reflections from members of our community including President Benarroch, our Chancellor, students, faculty and staff. Together, we'll reflect on what challenged us, what we learned, and what we are hopeful for in the weeks and months ahead. We will light candles to honour the lives lost to Covid-19 in Manitoba and around the world, and consider the promise that the future holds. I hope to see you there.
